Chainsaw Man - Peak Fiction in the making

There's something strangely endearing about Denji of all people trying to play straight man and actually succeeding simply because his ward is that much more erratic. The humor in this series works better than it has any right to.

Dear god the new chapter is really fucked up

Hope at least Meowy makes it out okay, otherwise the last remnant of Power is gone.

I have always found it strange that in a manga where literally tens if not hundreds of thousands of people die, people care more about the fate of the pets.

I mean that both in the manga's universe itself and outside of it whenever anyone discusses it.

With the pets here, it's because they were the last remnants of previous characters and meant a lot to the main characters for so many chapters, basically part of their family.

This is sort of the deal with pet deaths in general because usually it's because they are something that connects to the characters the readers grow attached too.

It's corny if it were like random animals that had no relevance to anything being killed.

People care because they’re important to Denji. And people REALLY like Denji, ergo they’re important to fans.

That’s typically how this sort of shit works in fiction.

She was a beautiful innocent creature, what'd she ever do to you? You fuckin' killed her! You killed her, you fuckin' killed her!

It’s not just because Denji and Nayuta care about the pets, it’s the exact same reason why people get upset over pets dying in movies, TV and video games, as well as why real life animal gore is heavily disliked. Animals are inherently innocent and, in many cases, cute. Doesn’t matter if they’re fictional, people don’t enjoy seeing that.

Not too long ago, I got through the first season of the anime, and after watching that I have to say that I don't quite get the appeal. I suppose the problem I have is that the show tries to be serious at certain points when I don't see why it should even bother doing that.

I'm also not particularly fond of the "dark" aspect of this story or for that matter Hell's Paradise. Why are these shows/manga killing off minor characters right after introducing them to us? It isn't funny or endearing. In fact, it makes me care less for the characters in general except those which the story (that I'm familiar with) clearly revolves around. Why should I even bother caring about any future character they'll introduce?

And then there is the animation.... The best thing I can say for it is that the cinematography makes up for it a bit, other than that it is flat out subpar, and I get disgusted hearing people actually praise this aspect of the show.

Personally I think the anime failed at adapting the more comedic aspect of the series.
I think they did a good job in making a certain characters death a lot more dramatic and touching than in the manga... but at the same time it was also the part where the manga started getting really weird in a good way, and it kinda felt like that was lost.

The manga starts out reasonably straight forward, but slowly gets weirder over time. The anime adapted the straightforward part of the story, and some of the crazier elements weren't really done too well in my opinion.
Overall the appeal of the anime came from the appeal of the manga.

It was by design. They wanted to make a serious cinematic anime for serious people and forgot that they were adapting a story of a borderline feral teenage boy sprouting chainsaws from his hands and using them to carve up bad guys.
That being said, to their credit they did do a good job of emphasizing how much Denji is manipulated, exploited, and borderline groomed in the first arc. You really get the sense that for all the tough love he gets from Aki, it's ultimately for the best and in the end the makeshift family he cobbles together with him and Power is the best thing that's ever happened to him. So while I do think the anime fell seriously short given how much time and money they dumped into it, their approach did work in at least a few ways.

Because our concept of empathy is a mess at this point, mine included (not the doggos and kitties!), though this didn't hit me particularly hard since it just felt as a patented Fire Punch shock moment for the hell of it and it thankfully was not graphic, just implied. The only one I care about is Meowy and we all know the law of manga, never consider anything dead unless you see a corpse and it gets buried (and it doesn't get up a chapter later).

To be honest, ever since the most endearing autistic couple got separated and Denji has been moping about being normal, the manga has felt kind of stagnant to me, hope the hot dog parlor puts a firecracker in Denji's ass finally, it's fun to see him as a straight man, not so much to see him moping week after week. Though I can admit it's probably one of those "if you didn't have to wait a week for it" sort of deals it would work much better.

Also, call me retarded, but who or what the hell is chimping out in the last page? It's not ringing any bells.

Apparently the Reze Arc is going to be a full movie rather than a season.
