I’m guessing that Chris paid the motel for a few days in advance. Until that money runs out, the motel can’t have it towed.
Most corporate-owned hotels and motels, even the raunchy ones, will put all property on a minimum 30 day hold before releasing it to someone other than the original guest who can establish a claim, or "destroying" it (usually actually means give it to housekeeping or maintenance staff). Not sure how an abandoned vehicle would be handled, but given the book value of even a beater is generally more than, say, a cheap laptop, I'd imagine the 30 day hold would apply to them as well. This is to avoid any legal repercussions for allowing personally owned property to be removed from the premises.
Of course, if the police have a warrant or court order to seize property, all bets are off. If the motel is a roadside motor lodge run by some Indian (dot not feather), fuggedaboudit.
