Chris lives in the present. He does not understand concepts like linear time or how an action can have a reaction.
He may have some abstract understanding of how a sequence of events may be interlinked and one event leads to another
but he has no mental capability to understand it applies to him or his actions.

In chris mind, anything that happens happens in the present and the future, even the immediate future, is impossible to predict.
He can not predict the consequences of his actions, even 5 minutes forward.

We have decades of evidence of chris to know this is how his brain works.

What strikes me about his depravity is that this is his own mother. Sure a lot of people are dicks, but they still feel extremely sentimental about their parents. If you asked Chris right now, he'd probably say something like, "Yeah, that was fated, and Barbie Chan failed her test." Instead, "how's my mom" or "I can't believe I did that, what's wrong with me".
