People don't decide to not commit horrible crimes like raping your mother because of the negative consequences, they don't rape their mother because it's ethically horrible, morally horrible, and horribly horrible. People aren't incarcerated just because some guy wrote down that mother fucking is wrong somewhere in the law, but to remove dangerous people (whose morals, ethics, and plain decency are so shot that they do not care about their actions impeding or destroying the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness of their fellow man) from normal society. They are arrested so that they do not further harm the theoretically moral, ethical, and good people of the nation. They are imprisoned for a time so that they may be reformed and made ready to re-enter society, not simply to put them in time out.

Good people do that maybe, but not everyone is good. Terrible, insane people do it regardless, because they're insane. But somewhere in the middle there are bad but rational people whose reason for not doing heinous things is an at least minimal sense of self-preservation.

I think the Jesus thing is very suspicious, the fact he sent the letter to his attorney instead of directly to Null shows some foresight in Chris’s actions.

I think Chris has already confessed everything to the cops, probably multiple times, so this letter won't incriminate him any further. His lawyer is probably not trying to get him a not guilty verdict, just the lightest sentence he can.
