Even if it wasn't stolen, it's just a rehashing of one of the oldest tropes in comics and storytelling in general: the warrior who conveniently meets opponents in ascending order of power.

It's why I've always found stuff like Dragon Ball Z funny: wasn't it lucky that Raditz was the first to arrive on Earth instead of Frieza or Broly.
