Some of them end so physically exhausted that they become unable to draw again for a weekly series.

This is the comparison that this individual is making between a professional published work and a single page of an empty promise.

I've never read a Manga in my life before. Not one. I used to buy them for my kids when they were kids, but they're all grown up now and don't read manga.

(I've watched just one anime. The one about the guy who wants to be a Rakugo comedian. It was OK. Idea was better than the execution)

But your description of Bakuman was so compelling that I couldn't stop myself from looking for it. I've just finished the third volume. I really enjoyed the 'inside baseball' aspect of the story.

Let's start with the most obvious thing.

In Season 5 of Rick and Morty, the finale is centered around "Evil Morty" explaining that the "Central Finite Curve" is a series of infinite universes separated from infinite universes where Rick isnt the smartest guy. That way "Rick" is essentially the controller of the multiverses connected to the "Central Finite Curve". This sounds a lot like a "Cosmic Circuit Breaker" doesn't it?





Now that is a pretty holistic explanation for how the Rick and Morty universe is set up, but at first glance and at face value Rick and Morty is a cartoon comedy about a super genius guy who goes to different universes for plot related purposes. That's where Rick and Morty's influence is in Superkiller. Guy going to different Multiverses. So where's the "killing the primary superhero come from"?

The comic book limited series Wanted, created by Mark Millar and artist J. G. Jones, is set in a world where supervillains have secretly taken control of the planet after a long, bloody war in which the superheroes were defeated. Using magic and advanced technology, the newly formed Fraternity was able to erase the world's memories of superheroes and supervillains. All that remained were faint, inaccurate memories, which were the cause of superhero comic books and other media. The Fraternity often raids other universes for treasure, as well as some trivial things, to satisfy their supervillainous leanings, indicating the existence of a multiverse.
The protagonist Wesley Gibson is just some guy who looks like Eminem, but then he gets recruited into "The Fraternity" after The Killer, a guy who is a perfect shot with hyper fast reflexes is seemingly killed. You find out later though that actually The Killer faked his own death so he could bring Wesley into this overarching plot where his enemies in The Fraternity are all killed, and finally Wesley can kill him and take his place.






I really think that either consciously or subconsciously Vito made Superkiller based on these influences. Not that its a bad thing, I just think that if he's going to criticize originality ever he should shut the fuck up because this is all highly derivative. Also, Wanted is a comic book made by Mark Millar who at the time was probably tired of Superhero capeshit, just like how Garth Ennis made The Boys, or Alan Moore wrote Watchmen, or Transmetropolitan was made by Warren Ellis. It's when the artist gets burnt out on the tropes and concepts and wants to kill them off. Is that why Vito is doing this?

Posted about it in greater detail in the Dax thread before, but the biggest issue with the comic is that the protagonist works underneath an "Agency" which has the ability to "grant" powers (Vito's word, not mine) to its agents to help them kill superheros. However, the protagonist is specifically NOT granted any powers, and yet is still considered one of their best agents. It begs the question... if he's one of their best without powers, then wouldn't he easily become their best with powers?

It's half-baked bullshit. To think he's constantly harping on Eric July with "what are Isom's powers?" is insane when his comic book is about a normal person who is better than other superheros at killing superheros and could be granted superpowers but he isn't granted superpowers because of a plot point you won't get to read until Superkiller #3 releases in 2032.

If I were to list the current most common trends in comic-book-related media right now, it would be this:

-Meta deconstructions (The Boys, Watchmen)
-Dark and gritty (Wanted, almost everything Batman, Boys and Watchmen again)
-Metaverse stories (Spiderverse, etc)

There is no way Chris thinks the premise of his story is original, or he's even more community college level than we thought. Since we're on weebshit, there is a scene in Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei where a failing manga author complains that he "did everything by the numbers" and "used all the popular tropes" and still failed. Seems more like that's Chris' future than delivering something earth-shaking.

It’s almost inevitable that once Superkiller gets released there will be people relentlessly attacking him and his artist because of all the shit Vito was spouting on Twitter.

I'm torn; the artist definitely doesn't deserve the bulk of the backlash, but they're still responsible for getting their workload done in a reasonable timeframe. They've had since July to finish the remaining 39 pages (Vito claimed 25% of the 52 pages were already done when the campaign launched). Unless the delay is falling on Vito failing to storyboard the rest of the pages, then they have to shoulder blame. Vito does allude to delays being their fault in his latest update months ago (this was BEFORE Vito recently gave his artist extra months to work on it too):



This update is from 3 months after the campaign ended, and Vito's saying the delays are because the other artists are working on too many projects to finish this one on schedule. Again, if the reason the artists couldn't get more done in those 3 months was because Vito wasn't pulling his weight and finishing the storyboards, then that's not their fault. The leader is clearly saying their artists are prioritizing other projects and aren't actually committed yet to working on Superkiller.

If Vito is being honest, then either he's unwilling to pay the artists enough for them to prioritize the project, or the freelance artists he's relying on are spread too thin to meet their commitments. Not that the artists deserve any bullshit, but they're making the situation worse if this is really the case.
