It's good you're able to be critical of July, he's not sacred. If you said this a while back you would get attacked here. I think it's all comic book people that have a defect, they are all fucking speds. See : comicsgate & all other mainstream or indie US comics creators and fans.

I don't know how much of that they themselves believed as Matt Groening wasn't that great of a comic book artist or writer, despite having taken the endeavor very serious. There were multiple Simpsons comic book spinoffs in the 90s, some superhero oriented or at the very least related, not always parody. Capeshit stuff isn't great, but we're probably living in the greatest period ever as far as comic books and picture books are concerned. Just have to skip the mass market stuff because reading and looking at pictures off screen still can't be beat, better for your eyes, senses, etc. It's worthwhile, especially now with how dumb and illiterate people younger than us will be. Places like Floating World Comic and Fantagraphics put out great books, but I get what you're saying and there's a lot of people hacking it up now and then. The 90s were a much darker time for comics. Resellers and speculators (like Vito, the failed gambler) sucked the genuine thrill out of everything.

The vast, vast, majority of western comics, especially capeshit, have always been disposable trash for kids.

You can enjoy them, sure, but it's like defending the sanctity of Saturday morning cartoons or anime: to any normal person you just look weird.

I wouldn't agree. I can't begin to know what people really do in their free time. That's too far beyond me. There's been millions and millions of comic ads, editorial comics, comic strips and comps aimed at adults that are still very poignant, provocative, creatively rich and artistically valid. Western comics are as great as any comics. Traditional superhero books here like professional wrestling broadcasts had been stunning forms of escapism for decades. It's amazing what you receive at that click and work frequency, not exactly high brow drama and tragedy but still very much trade worthy. Since we're living within an increasingly perverse prison system the normal person of tomorrow will be even more hardwired to love and fanatically worship escapism at the total detriment of themselves. Until the collapse comes a devotion to what's outside will barrel ahead and become much more extreme.

I read Calvin & Hobbes as a kid and it's always stuck with me, but there's Peanuts, Popeye, Dilbert, Gasoline Alley, L'il Abner, Dick Tracy, Krazy Kat, Mickey Mouse, The Spirit, Buck Rogers, Tarzan, Flash Gordon, Prince Valiant, Phantom, Blondie, Felix the Cat, Little Nemo in Slumberland, Annie, Captain Easy, Zippy the Pinhead, Fritz the Cat, B.C., Trashman, the old underground stuff, Heavy Metal, RAW magazine, stuff from ZAP and witzend, Playboy Magazine comics, Saturday Evening Post comics, the list really goes on and on and are exploited well on places like Instagram now. Newspaper strips were always meant to be read by both children and adults.
The titles I mentioned (most of which are certainly not fringe) were or are wonderfully crafted, many experimental and some rather deep, but certainly engaging if it's the medium for you. These are worthwhile analog creations that are significant to millions and millions of people, possibly a go-to route for escapism.
Comics and professional wrestling are not that limited, though they can be and are often enough, being so deadline bound and all. They can be both lofty and transcendent, to be grouped in with recorded music and film, same sensations. Pro wrestling is a large scale mythical thing in many parts of the world, Western and beyond, very much traditional by now.
No one can know what the future holds, but there's a built in audience in the many millions for lots of these universal, tried and true forms of entertainment regardless of trend. It's all lucrative, practical and engrossing enough to be as sustainable as anything. Maybe there'll be a burnout or a revolt or a return, Idk it's all a toss up.
