Cobra Kai

Alright, major spoiler territory for S4 having finished it.

Terry Silver is great. I never saw the movie he's from the actor is scary and convincingly tough. I struggle to believe Kreese can actually really fight anymore - and perhaps he actually can't bar being the king of the sucker-punch. But the actor playing Silver is a big guy and evidently still in pretty great shape. With Kreese they have to work around the actor's age and limited flexibility. When Silver kicks that bottle off the table in the wine cellar that is one mother-fucking fluid kick. The dude is six foot five and even if he's pushing sixty his sheer physical presence combined with the way the actor portrays him as being slightly crazy makes him intimidating. This is a dude who watched Highlander as a kid and didn't get that it was fiction. Kreese is manipulative and driven, but he's a loser, clinging to the last thing that will give his life meaning and doing anything not to just be a meaningless old man. Silver doesn't have Kreese's restraint. I love him as a villain and the ending didn't disappoint.

Trivia I learned: The actor has been doing Tae Kwon Do since childhood and is an actual Karate blackbelt. It shows.

Tory. In the finale I was in the tortuous position of really not wanting Cobra Kai to win, but really not wanting Tory to lose. She's really had it hard and it's not really her fault that she ends up in the Cobra Kai camp. I really wanted her to beat Sam. Even though I wanted Danny and Johnny to see someone combine their styles and it pay off. But her winning would mean victory for Kreese and Silver. She and Robby crashing the prom looked amazing, though. She and Robby deserved that night.

Mrs. Larusso. I don't have much to say here other than the actress is gorgeous. Not just in a regular "professional hair and make-up and lighting makes people look good, but in a real if you saw her on the street you'd walking into a lamppost good. Almost a shame because she's a good actress, too. But all I can see is how gorgeous she is. Scene where she goes badass on Tory in the restaurant and then suddenly realizes what she's done when Tory loses her job; and then even worse when Kreese tells her the situation... She's been on the sidelines as a voice of sanity between Johnny and Danny but now she realises how easy it is to lose your way once you actually decide to get involved. I liked that touch.

Miguel - what the Hell happened to him? I actually thought they might have recast him at one point. Actor's face went almost round since last season. A victim of his new celebrity status?

Pushing realism was the roof-jumping scene. I don't think Sam could have made that distance. It was way too much. And even Johnny wouldn't have been stupid enough to try and get the kids to do it or think those mattresses would be enough. Related, I'm glad Miguel didn't respond to Johnny's pep talk. It was right for him to pull out.

I am really glad Hawk got the chance to go against Robby in the championship rather than Miguel. Honestly, Hawk had earned it.

"Youtube Red" was always the dumbest possible name that they could have given that (I'm assuming now defunct?) service. Even back when they started it, there was already a porn site called Red Tube. And it wasn't even a particularly *good* porn site.

Pretty good. I'd say by the fourth or fifth episode it was clear it wasn't the last season. Some decent additions to the cast with Thomas Ian Griffith being the stand out but some other solid choices. A few cast members got notably less screen time this seasons as a result which is a shame but I struggle to say they had a good way to keep them in.

I also would have not pictured that last scene at Miyagi's grave ending the way it did. It's a solid addition to the cast though so I welcome it to a degree and it provides a nice lead into the next season.

Also @Overly Serious Griffith was giving off major Christoper Walken energy I thought which only made the performance even better.

How I know that this is a great show:

It's damn near impossible for me to rank the seasons. I haven't been able to say this about any other show since Breaking Bad. Not that I'm saying that Cobra Kai is "Breaking Bad" levels of greatness (because, well, nothing is lol), but when I have a really hard time choosing what my favorite parts of the show are because I'm loving it so much, then that's indicative of the show's quality.

If I had to choose a least favorite season, it would probably be season 3? But any nitpicks I may have had about season 3 completely disappeared with season 4. For example, while I loved Hawk turning on Cobra Kai in season 3, I thought that a bit more character building could have been done to lead up to that moment ... Well, season 4 served as Hawk's true redemption arc in the utmost satisfying way, so I really can't fault season 3 for that nitpick anymore.

I keep waiting for this show to stop being so entertaining and to stop surprising me, but it keeps proving me wrong. I'm thrilled to be proven wrong here!

From what I've read in the past few days, the writers of the show already had 6 seasons mapped out prior to filming the first season. That's probably why the series is so good; the stories were actually planned in advance. Hopefully that also means that there's a definitive ending planned as well? Because if so, then the ending is most likely going to be really satisfying and awesome.

Loved it, it started slow for me but the finale left me wanting for more. Love this scene too:

I don't really follow this but I hookup a buddy who is piracy-derped with copies, and he was like HOLY SHIT CHECK THIS SHIT for that part when the guy from the movies when he was like lol I was high af on coke why the fuck would anybody do that otherwise
I was never into Karate Kid when I was kid and it was the hot shit so I know nothing about him beyond the context provided in the flashbacks as he explained it, but I believe it

You know, I don't know who the fuck "Carrie Underwood" is, but from what I've heard, she kind of sucks.

How cool would it have been if season 4 of Cobra Kai had gotten Joe Esposito (who is in fact still alive... Old AF, but still alive.) to sing "You're the Best" instead. Way better I say. I still greatly enjoyed the recent season. But it would have been better.

I'm not a fan of Carrie Underwood (I don't love her, but also don't hate her-- she's one of those people who are just "there" to me), but I did actually like her cover of "Moment of Truth" ...

honestly thought it should end at season 4, didn't see how it could continue past that. but what they did with that character makes sense for a season 5.

I binged the entire thing (excepting first season since I saw that one) and it was really good. I really do love the throwbacks to the 80s and the soundtrack. Also how Johnny just seemingly walked out of the 80s from a time machine. Another thing I like is John Kreese's origin story and that there's a reason as to why he's such an asshole. There's also moments of humanity that shine through despite him trying to hide and bury them. He genuinely thinks he's helping people because he believes you have to be as cruel as the world is to survive. It goes with his experiences with mental illness from his mother and Vietnam. He isn't pointlessly cruel. He does provide a good contrast to Silver, who seems just to be genuinely psychotic and loves to inflict as much pain and misery as possible. He doesn't understand why Kreese is pissed at him at times, because he's being unnecessarily cruel that doesn't serve a point so he feels like he's been betrayed.

He's just loving inflicting misery on everyone. Kreese, Johnny and Larusso. He doesn't care who it is.

The references to him being high on coke is a reference to his acting during Karate Kid III (which was universally panned) because the director kept pushing him to go over the top with his performance so he's particularly psychotic. Also the reasoning as to why some billionaire would just randomly fuck with a teenager and a WWII veteran just because John Kreese said so. Like just fucked up and crazy. Its REALLY weird, because he's just so manipulative for no real reason and has this elaborate setup and shit to make this kid fight and fuck with Miyagi. Its kind of hysterical. Its also why there are references to the Bonsai shop being a bad idea (because the third movie sucks). The story to get him back into acting is pretty interesting, he stopped acting in 2007 to work on scripts and never really wanted to go back, but the producers convinced him. And so did his kids lol.

Basically think of Karate Kid III like Rami's Spiderman 3, with asshole Peter Parker.

Glad it didn't go woke.
It also didn't go OTT anti-woke, either. What it does is something perhaps even more important - it shows that someone can be non-Woke yet not evil, harmful or a bad person. Johnny thinks "gender fluids" are some kind of sports drink. And THAT'S OKAY.

The most poisonous, key element of Progressivism is that someone is wrong to think differently than you do. This show doesn't make fun of people for their wokeism (well maybe that dude who tries to make people do a one-minute silence for the planet in the first season - which was hilarious), it says how woke you are doesn't define you as a good or bad person. And that makes the show accessible to all and teaches a valuable lesson - you don't have a monopoly on viewpoints.

I don't think I've ever heard of that guy. He might be ace. But it wouldn't fit what was happening in the show which was that the federation president managed to get some celebrity in that made the tournament cool. Someone "Old AF" would just lose all the kids and most of the adults in the audience. (In the show, but also maybe out of the show).

Silver is ace and exactly how you describe him. Actual psycho compared to Kreese who is an extreme asshole but also just trying to cling onto some meaning in the last stages of his life. I'm really glad the actor agreed to come back. What he does right at the end switches things up to a whole new level.

I love how in a slew of shows filled with world-saving stakes and high-budget action, we get this show that tells us even small events in life matter. The pitch is essentially: "adults behaviour influencing kids who look up to them which affects their lives". And we care about this far more than a show where, I don't know, Doctor Who saves some planet of a billion people.
