cohost - A less-toxic Twitter alternative?

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
"total users: 130k. monthly active users: 12k. (..) readers keeping score at home will note that these numbers are all down or unchanged from six months ago."
This is exactly what happens to all these "alternative" social media sites once people realize they're actually quite shit and go back to Twitter. Cohost fell off a fucking cliff real fast when that happened, this thread isn't even 10 pages yet which should show you just how irrelevant the site is.
"first off, the elephant in the room: at our current burn rate and bank balance, we will not make July 15 payroll."
I wonder how exactly they burned all their runway when they don't even have any user growth. Did they not even get any new users from the Reddit fiasco? Lmao what a failure.
"at a certain point you have to ask: is it even possible to make money as a social media company?"
No. That's why all tech companies have historically just thrown money away in the naive hopes that they'll somehow find a road to profitability. But nowadays sites like Twitter and Reddit are clamping down on their losses.

It's always good to see trannies learn the pain, harsh reality that being a "worker-owned co-op" doesn't work.

From 2016ish to right before pandemic, Twitter was profitable. It made back all the money it had burned and couple billion more.
inb4 "some of that money was invested for 10+ years before it got in the black thus it still lost money".

Venture Capital is lotto tickets for rich people. It just takes one to hit and you make back everything you burned and more.

Anyway, what the real death knell for Snowflake Social here is that Venture Capital money is drying up due to a combination of factors but specifically right now interest rates are rising. This means that A, its more costly to lend $100 billion dollars to the next Twitter for a decade and also that B, you can now get better returns doing safer investments. When you can get 10% returns funding a BBB rated bond, that's a better gamble than that advertisers will pay to shill horsepiss to troons.

Why would they willingly post this? They're an LLC, right? They don't need to post financial statements or anything unless they just want pity money
Because they are lefties, so they believe in "solidarity" and other bullshit. Most likely it's just hoping someone will give them griftbux so they can stay living in either Portland or LA.

Because one of their goals is being transparent about their finances and where the money goes, to be better than those mega multi billion dollar corporations I guess.

That too, although the author said he spent a lot of money moving to Tallahassee. Either way, make sure to buy Cohost Plus(tm) so we can keep the duct taped shithole of a site together for a few more months!

The question is, if Elliot No Dong Jones is as rich as he says he is, will he bail them out just to have his own autistic little soapbox website that no one with a working brain would visit?
Of course not, but

we also completed migrating our CDN and firewall services to fastly, which means we now have a fixed cost with them. previously, we were getting CDN and firewall services for free, due to cloudflare forgetting they had given us a complimentary enterprise contract. this means that regardless of how much we’re paying fastly, it’s more than we were paying before.

our fastly contract is set at $4,850 per month (plus a 7% sales tax) for bandwidth/CDN and firewall services.

Remember, one of ching chong's "partners" is a Fastly employee. He'll gleefully help run them into the ground and pick at their corpse like the vulture he is.

Remember when Elliot tried to get the court of public opinion to condemn CloudFlare for hosting the Farms so Fastly would look better for NOT hosting a website where the users openly murder people of gender by the gorillion in comparison? When the expected boom in business didn't happen, Fastly still needed that money.

He has brought all, and I mean all, of this on himself. His Google fortune will be pissed into the wind, his family is still disappointed in him, when I mention him to my normie friends in casual conversation, the first thing they ask is "consent accident girl?", he's going blind, and he's still not a woman.

If he has sunk money into cohost, will he be smart enough to avoid the sunk cost fallacy and pull out, or is he doomed to be another broke tranny has-been?

Cohosts design makes me think of someone who just opened Microsoft Publisher 98 on his Pentium 1 MMX box, chose the most fugly colorscheme he could pick, and building some Geocities website with a bad font on it.

It just looks so unappealing and no one other than Elliot No Dong Jones types will ever try to use it. That's at the same time the appeal for eunuchs like our nigger Elliot, ass he will never read wrongthink on this abortion of a site.

Even I, someone who would greatly enjoy a website of that description, find cohost totally repulsive

Surprise, surprise, surprise. The demographics that site was courting are too poor (or able but unwilling) to give money to Cohost. It's almost as if you kind of need to eschew your communistic beliefs in order to make a social media/microblogging site sustainable, successful, and solvent.

Even Pillowfort -fucking Pillowfort- is doing better in comparison, albeit not by a huge margin.

Also, didn't Cohost basically allow CP in the form of cub art recently and then almost immediately did an about-face on it?

I went over this in the Musk owns twitter thread. (onion) Basically the three persons of gender running the site (now four persons) decided to "temporarily" ban loli/shota art and said they will later decide on a permanent policy about it in the future.

To my knowledge this policy is still in effect and hasn't changed. I looked for a bit but couldn't find any indication that they put in a new policy or anything. Kudos to them if they actually get away with a permanent ban by constantly saying it's just "temporary" and they'll address it in the future or something.

I admit, I don't know much about Cohost, but I remember seeing their staff page last year and thinking to myself "oh yeah it will be great". And here we are :)

"at a certain point you have to ask: is it even possible to make money as a social media company?"
In most cases no, hence I think decentralized services like Pleroma/Mastodon are the way to go (Meta seems to agree). Too bad they (as well as the Activity Pub itself) are pozzed to hell and back with trannies. But hey, at least you can easily de-federate from cancerholes like tech.lgbt

All these communist services seem to end up the same way, very strange.
Communism works until you run out of someone else's money. (See post war Europe)

They had that retarded tree house model for new signups that was supposed to "limit the user growth to a manageable rate", make sure that no bots sign up, or just keep the user count low to limit on cloud costs. This caused cohost to fill up with friends of friends of the initial group, who had gotten the invites, and then gradually filling up with people who signed up organically and got enqueued until they could post. I think I signed up for it, but I dont remember if I am still on the wait list. Once you sign up you get read access, I just scrolled for a bit and then closed it because no-one I cared about was on cohost. I think I changed mastodon instances once or twice since I signed up for cohost, because I actually use mastodon to talk to people I know and want to talk with. Mastodon is functional, decentralized and actually usable, because among the gazillion instances out there I can filter out they troon shitposting better than on Twitter, and connect to people I wanna talk to. Which is the primary aim of a social network.

Meanwhile Cohost developers opted to focus on crucial parts like setting your pronouns or giving you all the text formatting options including running WebGL or WebAssembly code in your posts. The latter, as far as I know, was not used maliciously yet, probably only because no true hacker has signed up to fuck that site up yet.

They also had no business model other than the voluntary premium accounts. This is less revenue than one dollar shave club. No ads, no selling user data, nothing. You can't run a company with no income. Hell, you cannot even run a cooperative like that because most people are taking stuff away for free. I'd be curious to see if the cohost plus income could even cover hosting costs.

Oh and while all this was happening they adjusted their wages for inflation - like, are they gonna die because of an 8% wage drop? Pumping out more money from a company that already has 8x more expense/loss than income is not going to last. I'm assuming that the
$41k was expenses or net loss and the $5.3k was income, because otherwise this sentence contradicts itself (either you made money or made a loss):
we made around $5300 in may, meaning we only lost $41k.
I would be very interested in looking at their real financial reports, written by someone who uses the terms correctly, but it's an LLC so we will just get this coffee talk gibberish.

And just a final note - what a stupid idea to call a social network running on a centralized server cohost?

In the wake of Musk's latest retarded decision to prevent guest browsing and ratelimit all user accounts, Cohost has received an influx of people that briefly took it offline.

I have no idea how they will support all the new users if they admit they can't make payroll at the current rate by the 15th.

In light of the recent Twitter restrictions, I thought I'd take a look at the fairly-dead Cohost to see what people are saying with the #twitter hashtag.

Bluesky is apparently racist against black devs, from a bystander Latino's point of view. As a bonus a commenter lightly chides the OP for using transwoman instead of trans woman:
