A man whose ex-partner forged paternity test results to make him believe he was the father of her child said what she did had ruined his life.

Ryan Hampson was at the child's birth after rekindling his relationship with Beth Fernley after she forged DNA test results to make it appear there was a 99.9% probability he was the father.

Fernley, 26, of Warrington, Cheshire, admitted fraud by false representation at Liverpool Crown Court and was sentenced to 13 months in jail, suspended for 18 months.

Mr Hampson - whose name was on the child's birth certificate - said his proudest moment was becoming a father, but when he found out it was a lie he was "left grieving over a child that was still alive".

He called for a change in the law to allow for mandatory paternity testing before a birth is registered.

But the Home Office said there were no plans to do so.

Beth Fernley forged documents claiming Mr Hampson was the child's father
Mr Hampson told BBC North West Tonight that he asked for the DNA test in 2019 after Fernley told him she was pregnant.

The court heard how Fernley had asked Mr Hampson for £300 towards the test, and then sent him screenshots which she claimed were from company EasyDNA.

Mr Hampson then rekindled his relationship with Fernley.

She later forged another letter when the child was a toddler.

That letter suggested the DNA company had made a mistake and he was not the father, the court heard.

When Mr Hampson contacted the firm, the forgery and deception started to unravel.

He said: "They told me that there was no record of me.

"They never sent the letters to me and they actually told me to seek legal advice because they actually thought I was a victim of fraud."

Ryan Hampson said he wants more recognition and punishment for paternity fraud
He described feeling "shocked", "numb" and "devastated" at the news.

"I honestly couldn't believe it," he said.

His mother, Claire Hampson, said it was "heart-breaking" to watch her son's "whole world fall apart" while trying to process "the fact there's been so much deceit not just to Ryan, but to us as well".

Mr Hampson contacted police in July 2022 and Fernley was arrested.

On sentencing, the Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Andrew Menary, described it as "a particularly dreadful offence".

He said when police became involved she continued to deny she had lied, in a "perpetuation of sinister dishonesty".

Ryan Hampson said he "adored" the child
Mr Hampson and his family want more recognition and punishment for paternity fraud.

"The actions that were committed were utterly dire.

"We are a victim of fraud and I felt like this should have been taken a lot more seriously."

He wanted to keep a relationship with the child who he said he "adored" but the biological father is now back.

"The hardest thing I ever done was to let [them] go," he said.

"I felt like it was the only right thing for me to step away and I have done that to protect [them]."

Mr Hampson said he is having counselling and with the help of his family, was working to rebuild everything that was taken away from him.

'No changes planned'

A Home Office spokesman said it took such cases seriously.

The spokesman said: "Fraud, and specifically paternity fraud, is a truly terrible crime, and those who provide false information on a birth certificate already face a criminal conviction.

"Work is under way on a new, expanded Fraud Strategy and we continue to work closely with private industry, law enforcement and tech companies to go after those committing fraud."

However, he added: "There are no plans to change the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1953 to include mandatory paternity testing prior to a birth registration taking place."

What I find really horrifying isn't so much that this happened, but that this man has zero legal recourse for justice. Not only that, but he will almost certainly be forced to pay child support as well if she ever applies for government aid of any kind. That is why men should never trust that the baby is yours. Get a paternity test, every single time, before signing the birth certificate. Make up some bullshit about genetic testing for health problems if you are worried your wife/gf/one night stand will lose her shit, but that is unfortunately the only way you can legally protect yourself as a man. NOBODY will have your back if you don't.

Given that is Britain we are talking about, the guy will probably go to jail for failing to pay child support now.
It would be the same in America too, especially since he signed the birth certificate... Men have effectively zero parental protections anywhere in the West.

The court heard how Fernley had asked Mr Hampson for £300 towards the test, and then sent him screenshots which she claimed were from company EasyDNA.
What this woman did is evil but also this guy is an absolute retard. He trusted some screenshots? If he bothered to actually contact this company to confirm the results her little scheme would have fell apart immediately.

Ha, a suspended sentence. So she won't ever do a day in jail then. Board feminists, any thoughts?
Female here: she should be sued into oblivion and then her wages garnished for repayment.

The UK usually allows bailiffs to be ordered into the house of a debtor to seize valuable goods as well. There was an entire show about it, "Can't Pay? We'll Take It Away", and the bailiffs were seizing TVs, jewelry and paintings off the walls.

He should be compensated for "pain and suffering", any money he spent and therapy expenses. The monetary judgement ought to be unbankruptable since there was a criminal case adjudication of guilt against her for fraud.
Wait Ryan is not a pooner? But...those shoulders.
British.

what are the arguments against allowing paternity testing?
According to France, which bans paternity testing unless the mother agrees or the state orders it, it is to "preserve the family unit", AKA, state mandated cuckoldry. Obviously France is renowned for its particularly loose, debased women, so I imagine that paternity fraud is more common there than somewhere such as Finland, but this is the same argument I usually see bandied about to oppose paternity testing. Another common one is claiming they are "too expensive", but we already dedicate significant resources to ensuring that women get their baby, including genetic testing to prevent mixups, so that argument doesn't hold up to basic scrutiny. Why is it a perfectly reasonable expenditure to give women peace of mind that their children are theirs, but not reasonable to give the father the same reassurance? The last argument is about genetic information being kept by the government, which already happens, and would not suddenly start because of paternity testing despite the pearl clutching to the contrary. Routine health screenings include sending blood and saliva samples off for testing, and that is not counting the standard genetic testing common at maternity wards.

The real answer is that there is no reason other than perpetuating cuckoldry. I personally suspect that the rates of cuck babies are way higher than anyone wants to be known, so the best way to suppress that information is to just quietly sweep it under the rug and ignore it rather than having the unpleasant experience of addressing a problem. Kinda like what we seem to do with every other issue.

The real real answer is paternity genetic testing is probably yet another brick in the crumbling wall that is socialized healthcare, and the gubment wants none of it. A pretty hefty one at it too, considering the demand and the infrastructure costs.

In the eyes of the State nothing changes, the baby will still be born/stay alive and hopefully pay taxes. So why should they care?
Everything else (custody battles, etc) just enriches the elite and benefits the govern, no reason to stop with that.

Never gonna happen. It's an issue that only affects guys so nothing will happen. It sucks but that's life for a guy.
Kind of like pregnancy and giving birth only being a woman's issue? No. This affects everyone.
ETA-
The silence is DEAFENING. If they had any part in this thread it'd already be 20 pages of 'oid slurs.
This woman makes men not trust us. Women have worked hard to get where we are in society as a whole, and this undermines that work.

including genetic testing to prevent mixups

the standard genetic testing common at maternity wards.
Huh, where does that happen? Genuinely asking.

Usually, the very cheap way mixups are prevented is the baby never leaves the mothers' side, unless either one's doing extremely poorly. They just get the little baby bed cart they use to place in the nurseries and prop them beside the mom's bed. Nurses or randos would literally have to actively intent to kidnap a baby to cause a mixup.
