When is he not being an asshole to the fans of the show. Does anyone think it's possible he was lying about the show being in limbo to make more money from merch or something?

Rick was always "muh super intelligent nihilistic but ultimately tragic figure" a good example is that time when he kills some random creature and then tries to kill himself, but ultimately just passes out because he's drunk; basically the whole episode with the hive mind. I wouldn't say Jerry has changed. He's always spineless until he's backed into a corner. Ultimately, in my opinion the characters are boring. Rick is smart, Morty is short sighted, April is a normal teenage girl, Jerry is an invertebrate and I forgot the name of the wife because she's, you know, forgettable.

In season 3 he was just a rag doll to be abused. Summer went from normal teenage girl to woke sidekick who don't need no man.

It's almost funny. Summer went from a supporting protagonist who had realistic, relatable flaws (peer pressure, low self esteem, puberty) to a background character who was a mary sue for the 13 seconds she was on screen.

Pretty obvious summer had the most male feminist writing her, she lost all her character, her importance and even her appearances but she's strong and super "Woke" now, right guys?

To be fair I stopped watching two episodes into the third season because the writing was about as consistent as badly made eggnog.

That being said, I'd recommend Bojack Horseman over RM any day. Deals with similar themes but the characters are consistent and writing is pretty good.

The problem with the show was it was told from the perspective of Morty, and it changed pretty quick. Rick was never supposed to be a main character. But then he became the main focus. In my mind Beth was set up to be the "I gave up everything for my family I should have become a great doctor" type parodied as a woman who works on horses. It wans't "always" this bad. It got worse. It had opportunity and it squandered it.

If this show was operated by anyone other than a self-loathing piece of shit, we could learn from it and see genuinely interesting stories where the moral isn't "caring about things is dumb, IRONY IRONY IRONY." We could use that amazing fucking premise - the family setup, the Back to the Future dichotomy, the blank-check of the technology - to experience interesting lessons. Instead, what do we have? Layers of nihilism, everyone is miserable, men are broken and stupid, UUUH HEEEEY UIH HEEEEY IT'S MEEEEE BUTTHOLE PENISBUTT AND THIS IS MY STOOOOOORE I LIKE TO PUT MY BUTT IN MY PENIS AND MY PENIS IN MY BUTT, UUUUH UUUUUH UUUH WHOOOAAAH OKAAAAY WOW HEEEERE I GO! and science is god but guess what everyone dies and being an alcoholic is what a smart person is.

I don't know, hey. The whole arc with Dianna going to a third world country and learning that her slacktivism means nothing was a critique on how little liberal platitudes actually mean was pretty poignant

Actually interestingly enough, Dianna's character is meant to be a representation of a feminist, while she comes of as worldly and intelligent at the start the viewer gets to watch as she shows how much of a petulant child she is as her character gets developed.

Edit: also forgot about that time when they portrayed the Bojack universe's equivalent to Huffington Post as Hippo who sold out her beliefs for a more trending topic.

Edit: Examples include: An entire episode being sex negative and declaring that strippers are actually exploited by the patriarchal system, and Todd's successful business idea of creating a "safe space" unisex taxi service that needed tweaking because female drivers were receiving "abuse" in the form of cat-calls from male patrons.

I hadn't thought of that. I only watched bojack horseman recently and although the drama feels a little heavy at times, for all the big talk R&M fans will give about how deep and insightful the show's characters are, bojack's writing blows that shit out of the water.

But bojack also carries plotlines and consequences realistically forever forward instead of just giving "deep character" in the form of boilerplate superiority speeches by Rick every other episode that are all interchangeable. Attention span is difficult to maintain when there's szechuan sauce to sperg about.

One pretty cringe-worthy line from Bojack is "As a straight, white man, I can report on this even though I have no experience with the topic". It reminds me of the hundreds of times you see people saying you can't have an opinion on something because you are of the wrong sex or skin color or whatever, and often when Bojack goes for a line like that it's really hamfisted and not up to the standards of how the writing usually is.
