Darkest Dungeon

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I have yet to play the second game, but his narration made Darkest Dungeon truly special. I never became sick of his lines since they felt so integral to the experience, even if I'd heard them 50+ times.

Arguably, the game's entire story is an examination of the character he played. It would not have been the same without his voice.

I really do wonder what the cause of death was. He didn't strike me as particularly ill or enfeebled.

Red Hook just posted on X that Wayne passed away. Extremely depressing. Sadly I wasn't able to find out what his age was through any Google searches so I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could share their findings if they discover it. The next narrator will have incredibly large shoes to fill. Rest In Peace.
More blood soaks the Earth, feeding the evil therein.

It's such a morbid thought to think that this was the better outcome for June, rather than trannies rejoicing over Red Hook severing ties with him for being too based about LGBTFAG shit last year. Either way, Red Hook themselves are fucked going forward now. No one will be able to replicate his voice work barring A.I shenanigans (Black Reliquary's narrator for example blows major ass).

Did I miss something? Did Wayne June say some shit about trannies I missed out on?

Didn't think i would have any reason to create a new account due to the Keffals kerfuffle of 2022, but once again i am reminded that trannies can and will ruin every community you enjoy.
Wayne June (VA for the narrator in both games) is getting heat from the official DD discord server and the subreddit after liking a post on twitter relating to being against LGBT faggotry and for posting the following video on his facebook.

In memory of Wayne, post your favorite Ancestor quotes. For me, it's:

"The buffoon is flummoxed!"
"A time to perform beyond one's limits!"
"A momentary abatement."
"Grievous injury, palpable fear!"
"Monstrous size has no intrinsic merit, unless inordinate exsanguination be considered a virtue."
"A star-spawned horror!"
"The sparkling eyes of youth – twisted and made merciless!"
"Anger is power. Unleash it!"
"There can be no hope in this hell, no hope at all."
"A singular strike!"
"Their formation is broken! Maintain the offensive!"
"The abyss returns even the boldest gaze."
"The flames of the pyre dance in his eyes, with murderous zeal!"
"Squirming, contorting and ever-expanding — this horror must be unmade!"
"Ambushed by foul invention!"
"Doors and windows will be bolted. Tonight, something haunts the dark."

Never did play either game; got a bit intimidated by the difficulty I admit, but I've been seriously considering it. I think I'll be grabbing at least one now; I actually only heard about Wayne June's passing just now, and I kinda want to show some respect. Any suggestions?

I'd say definitely the first. It's generally better regarded. It's also not as "Dark Souls hard" as commonly believed, so much as there are a lot of little tricks and ways of mitigating the RNG that it takes a long time to pick up.

Only played the first one, since the second one didn't convince me.
  • You can play with the Crimson Court DLC enabled on your first time, but to be honest that will give you a big headache if you don't know how to manage the Curse/don't look up the maps on the internet (unlike the rest of the dungeons, ignoring Darkest, the map in CC are fixed).
  • At the beginning of the game, get used to dismissing heroes if they get too stressed, wasting money on them is pointless since they don't have any upgrades or worthwhile quirks. If you play with districts enabled, I'd rush the Bank if I were you, as that will allow you to stop worrying about money altogether.
  • Once you start unlocking Veteran dungeons, don't try to quickly take them on. You'll need your roster to be up to date with their equipment, trinkets and possibly a few good quirks. The Apprentice dungeons trick you into getting comfortable since anyone could take them on, but starting from Veteran you'll really need your team to be upgraded.

I did this. Almost nobody recommends this. But it's what a real man (a real retarded man) does.

If you do this, an annoying event called "The Town is Abuzz" will occur. This weakens stress relief activities in town, but much worse, blocks positive events. You can get rid of this immediately by doing the first Crimson Court mission. Don't, unless you're really eager. (I always instantly do it.)

Put it off until you have a sort of A-Team for the Court put together. Vestal/Jester/Flagellant/Hellion is that team. You want your team all maxed as beefy level 2s. It's a Novice mission but it's fairly brutal for such missions, especially if it's the first time. Be careful not to overlevel before your first trip in if you're playing on Darkest, because overleveled heroes can't go in.

(Radiant means you can overlevel somewhat so if you want to game it a bit and don't mind putting up with the annoying "Abuzz" event, you can wait until your team is all L4 and trinketmaxed and then curbstomp it. In Darkest you can't go in over L2.)

Also, The Fanatic is the absolute worst "mini-boss" in the game (literally worse than all of the actual bosses) and there is no point (other than masochism) in ever fighting him, other than the achievement, or if you're an insane weirdo and like playing with an entirely infected roster, because you have to kill him to keep him from constantly showing up).

His drops are garbage, and he's pure TPK material.

To avoid him, never bring more than one infected hero on a mission. Except Court and boss dungeons, so you can bring fully infected teams into those. Also after you kill the Countess he goes away for good. If you kill him before then, he comes back the next time you reset infection by killing a Courtyard boss and it goes back up again to his trigger level.

Time to sperg.

I started by finishing two Radiant estates - one without DLC, one with - and then moved on to Stygian. Have 8 level 6s at week 54 and only one level 1 death (used a Shambler altar with one already afflicted). I don't think I'd have gotten hooked if I started on Darkest instead of Radiant. More than leveling up more slowly or paying more for building upgrades, I hate having to choose between trinkets or Caregivers Convention or doing something pointless to level up a region so I don't outlevel a region boss. I've already passed on beating the Veteran Ruins bosses until I can do DD quests to free up roster space. Even then I'll probably not bother, which is a pity because Prophet's Eye is one of only a handful of worthwhile boss trinkets.

Radiant can make the difficulty spike in Champion and DD quests steeper, but if someone can't tell the difference between kicking butt because they're awesome and kicking butt because they're overleveled, that's on them, and that's their opportunity to wake up and git gud. Perhaps it would be better for the game to tell the player that they're being allowed to overlevel, e.g. with dialogue from the heroes. But the other feature of Radiant is that it's easier to get up after getting knocked down, because of the better Stagecoach upgrades and faster XP gain. An easy mode that makes choosing quests more intuitive and makes it easier to recover, rather than just buffing the player and debuffing enemies or removing hero death, is a refreshing design.

Anyway. Since the Radiant update allowed incomplete parties to embark, it seems the "intended" method of dodging the Heart's instakill is to embark with only two heroes - Reynauld and Dismas if you want to be poetic. The devs could have just not done a check for how many heroes there were and made the game unwinnable. But even without that, with Shard Dust now refreshing per-battle skills, 3 PD + 1 Leper is possible again.

So that this post isn't just my sperging: As of May 1st 2025, all storefronts should have an official 64-bit client. However, there is a game-breaking bug where items can't be picked up in the Farmstead and the new client triggers multiple antiviruses (archive). But hey, now it loads more anime and coom well-balanced class and enemy and rework mods!
