Dead Space Thread

Nothing good has to come out of Clown World, but by god if we get a chance to pry a silver lining out of a size 37 squeaky shoe let's fucking go for it.
This shit is how you get disappointed in anything.

Be like me and show apathy for any releases. I've saved you tons of emotional stress for the next 30+ years.

I tried living on blackpills, shit's not to my taste. Gotta have something to laugh at, even if it's a trainwreck.
If it's trash, hey whatever heard this song before. If it's good, hey cool something went right for once.

Vandal would be a good protagonist for a Dead space game without Clarke.

She was a very likable Ripley type who at least told people "she was seeing shit that isn't real" whenever she would see the Islamic marker oasis in the desert with an ambiguous fate.
Nah your staying dead with Weller.

Whoever made this poster, was clearly inspired by Dead Space 1 Artwork.

Bumping this thread to show 2 videos from the Dead Space remake. I know it's made by EA Motive but so far I'm impressed by what they're showing. It seems like they have put a lot of thoughts into it and it won't be a cheap remaster.
The release date is for the end of January 2023.

Personally, I think that Dead Space isn't old enough to actually merit a "remake", it still holds up today mostly. Some parts of the gameplay, like the Asteroid Turret section and the Zero-G sections, they have definitely not aged well in my humble opinion, but that's part of the game's charm IMO.

Still, with what I've seen so far, I will remain cautiously optimistic. Emphasis on that last bit, because we're still quite a ways from release and there's no guarantee they won't pull a TLOU2 and pull the rug out from underneath us once they've got enough people hooked.

I really think its obvious EA is doing this to ride off the horror remake trend that REmake 2 started

Yeah, it deffo feels weird, admittedly it comes from the early 7th gen but most of us haven't really moved on from 8th gen cos good luck finding a ps5. The Ishimura felt so desolate when I went back to it recently and finished it, I wanted to get off that ship. I could feel it.
I don't see the point of keeping (roughly) the same map, though....

Hell, I was replaying spec ops: the line yesterday on the xbox360 and it still looked pretty good.

The one thing I can think of is that they might also be making it suitable for VR. Doom 3 has shown that it's possible to do that, and the games of that era have strong aesthetics I think which are perfect for VR play. (Without being overly taxing on graphical complexity.)

There's this thing that devs do where they think that sci-fi environment needs to be as visually complex as they can make it.

There is a lot of grime, rust and overlapping maintenance on a ship or oil rig but it isn't universal. The mess or sick bay are usually nice and clean and open, sure you're never far away from pipes, wires or machinery but you're hardly in the bowls of thing at all times. Another problem with the "lived in" look is that it never looks like it was never new and clean.

Then there is the over designing of everything in sci-fi games. The 343 Halo games are a prefect example of this, and it makes everything look too complex and bulky. Sometimes less is more and for certain items like say a fire extinguisher, more lights and polygons just make them look needlessly over designed.

I don't want the devs to change the very dark and industrial look for the Ishimura but I can already see hallways that are fairly simple in the original being filled with stuff to the point where a simple lighting fixture or wall panel is made of 1 million polygons and has 8K textures for no real reason.

I feel like so many designers took the wrong lessons from Alien. The Nostromo has a very 70's NASA look to it and while it's cramped and full of lights and buttons, it's still well lit, has clear hallways and looks somewhat comfortable. The Ishimura on the other hand looks like the refinery that the Nostromo was pulling at all times.

Alien: Isolation nailed sci-fi atmosphere for me. Both visually and in the auditory department. Simplicity works so much better, 100 % agree with you.

Audio obstruction and displacement is impressive. Walking down corridors is way more tense if you can't pinpoint exactly where the danger comes from

dead space was great, but i feel its like bioshock where we didn't expect much. its unique traits are cool. the entire concept of delimbing enemies makes it an amazing take on zombies, but its clear you should never bother with any guns besides the first one you get, gameplay wise its sort of shit, but its atmosphere and story and location make up for it. for fucks sake there are still Ishimura threads on /v/. the layout was great.

Well they add a lot of "screen clutter" in modern times. Things that were simply a texture or low poly model back 15+ years ago are now full poly, ultra high resolution textures, simply because "GRAPHICS, BRO!!!!".

And on that note of "343 Halo", I hate that sci fi is going in the same path as Destiny/Warframe. Good GOD I hate that aesthetic. It's just fantasy capeshit with a thin pretense of being "Science Fiction".
