Dead Space Thread

They’ll probably ditch or edit what made me love the universe and characters, specifically Isaac who is a favourite of mine among video game protagonists.

From the slight details in the first game to the banter in the second, he’s a damn good character. First of all he’s got a slight hunch, a reward for a lifetime of backbreaking labour and the journal entries for each mission, an overlooked feature which develop a mute character pretty well. He’s bitter, his mom blew his college funds on Unitology and he ended up with a lesser education as a result, his career is stagnating and he’s pushing 50. It’s very clear that the only thing that made Isaac happy was Nicole and he encouraged her to do a tour of duty on that doomed ship…..

It’s why the self-harm angle is critical to the first two games, Isaac sees the other “survivors” mutilating and killing themselves in DS1 and he’s got no way of knowing that it could be his future, when the Nicole reveal is done and the Hive Mind is dead Isaac’s true torment begins.

Throughout DS2 Isaac struggles with his guilt, it’s killing him and the Marker preys on the weakness, appearing as a mutilated Nicole which is probably a creation of Isaac’s mind. He never found her body and she was more than likely amongst the hordes he cut down. The poor guy probably prefers to imagine her as a corpse then as one of the abominations.

“Nicole” is every negative thought made manifest, every insecurity, weakness and shred of guilt made flesh. She even jeers him after a dementia-induced suicide attempt. While he fights through the Sprawl Isaac goes through the phases of grief, and it’s when he forms a small group of survivors that he has his “upward turn”and Nicole disappears, it’s only when he’s alone that she returns and he finally comes to terms with her loss, through a boss fight no less.

The Marker destroyed, Isaac sits down. Accepting of his fate, but he is ultimately rescued by Ellie and it’s very clear that this ending represents his “second chance” in the first game’s ending Isaac is alone with the haunting memory of the woman he loved, in the second he is alone with a woman who could be what he lost, something to live for.

Fuck EA if they tamper with this wonderful story.
I wonder who was the woman that was working with Isaac in the mining deck in the first game. There are theories it was another survivor that Isaac wished was Nicole.

I was mad when we couldn't save the engineer and his botanist gf though.

Which woman? I don't recall anyone helping Issac aside from the team he came with. Certainly none of the Ishimura's crew were alive, except for the good doctor towards the end.

I assume he means the one he arrives with

I think he was hallucinating about Nicole and the Necromorphs attacking her.

After all, Dr. Kyne thought he was talking to his dead wife when no one was there to "take her place".

Its where he is trying to escape the mining deck and he has to protect "Nicole" on the other side, working on a computer to bring forward the tram, from being attacked by necros.

Oh that one. I don't think they actually ever explained that bit either, don't they? I always chalked it up to marker bullshit and it was actually Kendra or Hammonds doing it. Or just him hallucinating the entire thing.

He was almost certainly hallucinating it. The marker was exerting enough influence during that short section to block his comms since after that section Kendra mentions she lost contact with Isaac's RIG.

I believe its a tired meme at this point but lol one single engineer accomplished what the USM Valor crew of soldiers failed hard at. IIRC those soldiers were told about the threat they going to face.

I wonder if they'll do anything different with that escape pod in the remaster. That's the one plot hole everyone rightfully hones in on.

They might put an Infector in that pod alongside the Slasher, that way the crew would get steadily overwhelmed.

Or they could replace the Slasher with a Leaper, I've always hated those fuckers.

Yeah that's the only way it could ever make sense. One necromorph couldn't kill a ship without an infector.

Man, I was replaying the trilogy and Im at DS 3. The way Im doing is playing them on the hardest difficult available right away (new game + difficulties dont count since I have to finish the game to get them and in the case of "Hardcore" from DS2...three manual saves and thats it? I have a busy schedule so I legit cant finish the game in three sections.)

Boy I think I have realised the problems with this game the moment I shot the plasma cutter for the first time.

I compare shooting the Plasma Cutter from 3 after shooting the one from the previous two entries being like shooting with an effective revolver and suddenly you are shooting the BB model, it looks legit but once you shoot, the sound and impact feel completely wrong. The first necromorph encounter in 3 feels so...wrong. I shoot them at their legs and even in Zealot difficult in 2, that was enough to make them drop down to the ground (not dead tho). In 3, I feel like I had to shoot 4 fucking times to remove a limb...this feels EXTREMELY wrong after the plasma cutter felt powerful enough to remove limbs of regular necros with around 2 shots compared to the 4-5-ish here. The plasma cutter feels WEAK. Getting the Planet Cutter bonus from playing DS 2 remedies the problem a tiny bit but its still there.

The game is now built around this resource management system and weapon crafting which is a rollercoaster to me...sometimes its pretty neat and the other times I want to strangle (not choke, mind you) the devs for changing a gameplay styled that worked so fine the previous two games. I gotta admit the combination of the Line gun and force gun is pretty cool tho (they do eat up ammo like a motherfucker tho). A lot of my deaths in 1 and 2 were mostly my fault or just bad luck but in 3, I get constantly pissed at the game for getting me killed constantly by putting me in situations where the tactics of the first 2 games barely work...it forces me to adapt in the worst way possible.

The scavenger bot is cute tho...but I know this thing's whole existence is to get more of those precious resources that EA can use to make you get desperate to get for better stuff to craft (Im playing on Impossible difficult mind you, the game is not being particularly kind with enemy drops). You can either deploy the bot over and over and wait like a dummy or pay EA money for shorter wait times and more resources. Fuck EA, hot take I know.

Exploring the space debree is a pretty cool experience tho...but the lack of reward for it is a tad jarring, it almost feels somewhat incomplete. Maybe it will improve later on, I dont know (its been years since I played 3 and this whole trilogy marathon was started actually before EA's announcement so it was all a big coincidence). Maybe I will get used to it but DS3 just feel like it punishes veterans by forcing them to adapt to a whole new gameplay aspect.

But yeah, one positive I guess is that it looks gorgeous, the ships look ancient and give that Ishimura feeling in its own way, as ancient as the rotten corpses on it.

Biggest gripe I have with 3's Plasma Cutter, in addition to everything you dislike about it, is how the spread is just way too tight compared to the first 2 games. The cutter in 1 and 2 was a beast that had a nice and wide plasma beam; 2 tightened it a bit but it wasn't by much. 3 was noticeably different. Like if I shot at the arm's connecting joint in the shoulder in 1 and 2 with the cutter then that arm was going flying, but in 3 it just counts as a torso hit because of how tight the spread is. Sure you can go for a limb shot farther out but the spread in addition to how skittish they are in 3 means it's stupid hard without stasis to do it reliably.

It's like you go from bird shot to buckshot after 2 games of consistent handling.

How is part 2? I only played the first game and thought it was okay. It was a little too hand-holdy and the turret sections were garbage.

Stellar list of pedigrees for the remake

/sarcasm
yeah, seen that list a few days before. the writer credit alone...

still don't understand EA's goal with this one, what kind of sales numbers do they expect with that level of development? it just reeks of "oi, dead space is still popular, how can we capitalize on that? remaster? nah, let's go all in so we can milk it with a dead space MCU!". imagine having burned through your IPs so hard this is what they have to go back to.

literally all they had to do is give the original a new pass and sensibly (lol) update parts, but nope...

least the train wreck will be fun to watch. or sad. probably both.

Could be worse.... It could have been as shitty written and as politically charged as vampire the masquerade 2.

Very good. Issac gets a very likable voice and its a horrifying action game that Resident evil wishes it could be. I found it to be a lot harder, especially early on when you have basic bitch med armor. My only complaint is that the box cover armor is very late in the game and easy to miss.

Oh its worse, Squadrons was filled with so much gay retarded shit it was nausating.

I fully expect now for some of that shit to seep into the remake.

Unless most of the story is a heavy copy/paste
It was... alright. Not great, but ive seen so much worse shit I can be a bit more forgiving. It's gonna be completely unbelievable to see these kinds of characters survive in a horror game though.

Nah m8, dont you know that Dead Space was filled with minorities that were smart enough to figure out that you shoot the limbs off the necros while them big dumb white straight males are too dumb to notice such a basic obvious fact? Almost all of them were able to escape Aegis 7 and the Ishimura unharmed because they are too smart to be affected by the marker signal? Tsk tsk tsk...poor heteros, if only they didnt hold too much into their tradionalist ideals and just accepted the homo into their lives. Oh and Unitologists were obviously meant to be conservative Trump supporting Christians, comitting suicide and shit. Dead Space was actually quite uplifting for the LGBTQ crowd, pity DS 4 wasnt made so we could have the proper conclusion with a woman of color saving the galaxy because the white straight men failed.

Its just like I remembered all those years ago!
