I literally live in what would be considered a food desert. There's like, a Dollar General and a gas station with a Subway in it.
Although, I will say that once you begin to talk to the locals, you're afforded a wide variety of locally made cheeses, meats, and breads. In fact, I'm in walking distance from a farm where I regularly go get homemade goat and sheep cheeses. In addition, the owner usually offers me free duck and chicken eggs. I so love the duck eggs for baking that I will cold call her front door, and invariably, if I provide empty egg cartons, she is so pleased to oblige. Then I have another neighbor who will slaughter pigs, goats, chickens, beef, and venison. Barring the venison, they will provide the animal at a *ahem* trade, and you can see the damn thing before it gets slaughtered. Thankfully, being in a poor county in Florida, I manage to have a lack of oversight that compares to the mid-70's for most places.
