Digimon

Ghost Game attracted an extremely rabid, unhinged hatedom that makes the Digimon fandom even more insufferable than usual. Grown ass adults throwing spastic shit fits over how much they hate it. Hell there are people even defending the 2020 reboot of Adventure to trash GG.

Without looking them up, I bet they cite Yo-kai Watch for the "decline" of Digimon because how dare Digimon try something new with itself.
Digimon has always tried to have each season as different from the rest. The first is essentially an itsekai, second one isn't (and people have complained that it wasn't exactly the same). Tamers is different from those 2 since the DW is only there for a few episodes. Frontier was probably too different and why it hurt on the ratings.

GG is good for what it is, and probably a sign for Toei to stop beating Adventure like a dead horse.

They’re upset because GG is an episodic MotW show that’s light on an overarching plot. The director of the season even said it was made to be an episodic show when it was first announced yet fans are still seething instead of just dropping it and moving on. GG isn’t perfect with how it handles the format but for the most part it’s good for what it was advertised as. There’s nothing even massively controversial about it like some of the older seasons aside from pacing so watching adults flip out over a fairly harmless kids show is sad.

Though yet again we have adults on Twitter starting discourse over Bluey and Coco Melon of all things so I wouldn’t be surprised if that mentality spilled over to Digimon from those communities.

Tri for whatever reason decided they wanted to fan the flames of shipping from the word "go" (it was showcased in the first PV) when everyone and their dog fucking knew it was extremely pointless to do because Mimi marries Michael*, not any of the OG DigiDestined. I don't know what they were thinking in deciding "Oh Izzy's crushing hard on Mimi now after all this time". That's why the ship got more popular, but pre-Tri, Joe/Mimi was the bigger ship among Japanese fans.

Mind you, Tri made a lot of dumb decisions, but that one's baffled me the most especially since it doesn't go anywhere at all. Mimi doesn't even give him a follow-up or rejection or nothing. But I mean, they dropped a lot of stuff, so what's one more.

EDIT: *It's a popular fan-theory, though I swear there was a kid clone in the epilogue had kinda looked like him. Mimi's son is ambiguous enough, I suppose, but she clearly did not marry Izzy or Joe, and the only other character who liked her was Michael, and she likes America a lot to have dual-citizenship it looks like. So it's generally assumed by the fans the two married even though Michael doesn't show up in the epilogue because only the main cast matters.

Oh I can fully see why a lot of folks like to jump to Michael and Mimi's son having the same-ish hairstyle shape to some degree as their personal clue that those two got together, but in the end yeah like @Johnny Salami said the only visual outright visual confirmation is that Yamato/Sora and Ken/Miyako happened, but I buy it that Joe/Mimi up until Tri might have been more popular. (Though to play devil's advocate, wasn't there the sole focus episode 10 on (Koushiro)Izzy/Mimi and that Drama CD segment of him typing out a love letter with the narrator even stating that the fans were clamoring for something involving Izzy/Mimi/Kari that fueled that ship's popularity in the first place that Tri's writers wanted to pander to folks with?)

But looking back on it, I do think 02 was mostly a mess with in my eyes the Digimon Emperor arc being the only somewhat decent, if very drawn-out plotline in the season with the rest just being a clear mishmash of different antagonists being hinted at or introduced with barely any time to have focus on them and the mass different evolution lines also being cumbersome that I still find it rather hilarious how the semi-final episode was a paper-thin excuse to showcase all of them one more time (with the exception of Magnamon) for roll call's sake.

But if there's anything that felt the most impactful yet rushed, was that epilogue. It's a brief 3-minute quick timeskip just showing off the careers of the main characters in short sentences/stills and a lot of the kids are just younger copies/genderbent versions of themselves and a brief allusion of how Digimon and humans manage to co-exist peacefully for the most part. It hardly felt satisfying after seeing the cast develop over the course of Adventure 1 and I genuinely think Toei trying to constantly pander to the Adventure crowd with shit like Tri, Kizuna and now that upcoming 02 Zero movie yet also supposedly still having to adhere to that 02 ending just makes me roll my eyes.

And oh wow, really true about all that stuff regarding Tri with the designer having to design another version of Omegamon despite being tired of it and the fifth movie barely making profit? I knew Tri wasn't well received but I guess it was much harsher than I thought. When I tried watching it I could barely focus because they spent too much time on pointless side stuff with no payoff or constantly arguing/harping over the Meicoomon situation.

Director Kakudo was in charge of Ghost Game Ep.58!
While he was active from the very beginning of Ghost Game, this episode marks the last time he will participated. While it will still air for a few more weeks, the finale is approaching.
(Tweet, archive)
Looks like GG is ending soon. seeing as Angoramon reached Ultimate today and Jellymon might reach it next week they still have things to do with Gulus and his other 2 evolutions (which people were expecting to show up last week). Hopefully they don't rush the ending

Man, growing up, I thought I was the only kid who actually gave a shit about shipping in Digimon. Was slightly disappointed when I found out that Tai and Sora didn't get actually together, but by that point, I longed moved on from Digimon.

Can't help but want to watch the first season again at some point for nostalgia's sake.

I remember when official art for Ghost Game was revealed and people were bashing the character designs because they “looked too much like Yo Kai Watch and Pokemon Sun/Moon” and it “didn’t look like Digimon.” Digimon uses drastically different art styles all the time, there is no one unified look for the series. Also I remember people writing off Ghost Game and claiming it will be bad before the very first episode even aired, but yet again the Digimon fandom always does this with anything that isn’t tied to Adventures.

WtW’s forum is fun to read sometimes because Marc’s Ghost Game takes are terrible and one of the admins, Vamde, gets super pissy when people get into even the slightest of debates. She’ll scream at users to stop bickering, deletes posts, and threatens to hand out suspensions and bans. And none of these discussions are even remotely nasty, it’s just people having civil, friendly, debates discussing the series.

Maybe it's because I'm not (as) autistic about Digimon, but I don't think I'll ever understand why the more vocal members of the fans don't like anything outside of Adventure. I grew up with the Digimon series starting with Adventures, but I don't hold it in such an untouchable high regard. The mindset on display just befuddles me to no end.

It's why many consider Frontier to be "hated". The vocal minority effect pretty much made the series's reputation. The silent majority, however; who can now express their voice more openly online, pretty much loved it and thought it was unique.

Which is ironic because Frontier is the closest to the feel of the first two Adventure story arcs but people can't get over the fact that there is no pet dynamics.

I'm still waiting for someone to cancel Marc for using a tranny to try to cover up his homophobia. But, the dude is a piece of shit on so many levels that I would be very okay with him getting slammed.

Looks like next week's Digimon episode will have a feeder fetish episode.

It's fucking over
While the preview is definitely eyebrow raising I think people overanalyze and read way into a lot of elements they think are fetish material. Maybe it’s because so many people have their brains fried by porn over overconsumption that they see sexual themes in everything they look at even if they aren’t there.

(Don’t worry this post isn’t aimed at you, it’s aimed at coomers on Twitter.)

Also I love how the fandom is crying about how GG is now “too scary” for a kids show after writing it off as a kiddy show aimed at younger children compared to other Digimon seasons at the beginning of its run. Though you can thank Marc and his WtW friends for that since he spent a lot of time prior to the show’s airing bitching that the horror elements would be nothing more than on the level of Scooby Doo. There’s so much stuff aimed at kids that’s far more fucked up than GG.

I apologize for the GG sperging, it’s just the fandom has gotten unbearable and downright exhausting parroting the same complaints over and over again each week for nearly 50+ weeks now. This is the first time in ages I’ve seen so much scorn towards a Digimon season. Also this is only place I can actually talk about GG without dealing with screeching man children over analyzing a kids show.

Ghost game is scary to these people? What? 🤣

I've seen scarier. This isn't even the worst Japan has for their all ages demographic.

I love Ghost Game. Didn't know it had a weird following. It kind of fills the hole Yamishibai left in my heart.

Nowadays the hatedom for GG seems far more vocal the the actual fans. More and more people have been dropping it (which is fair enough and valid since the episodic nature and slow pacing isn’t for everyone.) yet still follow the show each week to complain instead of moving on to something else.

As I said earlier GG isn’t even controversial enough at all to warrant the rabid hatred I’ve seen. The show has no ship teasing or implied romance at all. The only ship I see in the GG fandom from fans is Hiro/Ruli but they pretty much keep to themselves and are mostly Japanese fans who simply think the two look cute together. There are no majorly controversial plot points or arcs (at least for now.) Most Digimon seasons have at least one major aspects that causes massive butt hurt amongst fans but GG is fairly tame.

Also the whole “Ghost Game is too scary for kids” complaining is proof that western adult fans of anime and cartoons are some of the most thin skinned people out there.

Its the same shit that happened to Appmon years ago. Digimon fans just want another action adventure story like the classics but get pissed off when some new genre or not-Digimon is getting made next.

At least, this will pass when the next Digimon will be another nostalgia wank with the same bickering and GG will be vindicated by history as it is judged by its own merits like Appmon.
