There are people in my life that act a lot like Phil, always having an excuse or some kind of “medical problem” to explain away all the horrible things that they’ve done. To say, “Oh, it was mah depreshan dood! That’s why I do dumb shit,” is no different than blaming hormones or a brain tumor for the dumb shit you do.

Depression, makes people want to not get up, or shower, or eat—so maybe he can blame being disgusting on depression, but not twitter outbursts. I tend to think that he looked on web md and saw depression, not that he’s actually ever been diagnosed.

it's like he was too lazy to bother even doing that much. half of what he was describing didn't sound like depression at all. it made him obsess over one girl, it made him post a stupid tweet he apparently knew ahead of time would blow up and make him look bad, it made him be shitty to all his friends and burn bridges, it made him think because his parents weren't helping him out with his debt that they didn't love him, it goes on.

some of it, like being quick to anger and never going outside could be explained by anxiety, but at the end of the day no matter what he has he's still an asshole. REAL TALK, no diagnosis - not even autism - could excuse his behavior. he makes a conscious decision to get up every day and beg for money from speds and children.

It’s almost like Munchausen Disorder. I have a bad back so I can’t work. I’m depressed so I apparently act like an asshole and stalk a girl in high school. I have gout pity me. If you have some extra bits, maybe throw ‘em my way.

Did he say whether he's actually been diagnosed with depression or any mental health disorder? Plenty of people just assume they have depression because they feel sad about negative stuff in their lives, but that's very different from actual depression.

Anyway - no. He does not have depression. My autistic metaphor for mental health issues is that they're like pizzas. The toppings are all different, but underneath, the base is more or less the same, and Phil doesn't fit that. I think he's miserable about a lot of stuff because he genuinely thinks he deserves this lifestyle that's just unattainable to him. He stupidly spunked all his money when he was actually making it, and never planned for the downturn that he's currently on. He's probably stressed about that, but that isn't clinical depression.

As has been previously pointed out, this faggot repeatedly calls people mentally ill, calls them retards, and infamously shat on Wardogleader for "making me look bad" when he told Phil about his own depression. It means that his current talk of "all that shit I did was because muh depression, sound good?" doesn't come across as especially sincere.

I dont think he has depression. What I truly think it is is he's starting to realize everything he's done. He's seeing he has spent 10 years doing this and all he has is debt. He has a detractor community wanting to see him fail thats arguably bigger than his fanbase. I think he is subconsciously getting tired of all of it and he is saying it's depression because he's too proud and stuck in a victim mentality to admit its regret. I think he's super confused about how he's virtually made no progress on his career when all these youtubers and streamers shoot past him in a matter of months.

Tl;dr he's feeling regret for his 10 year begacy but hes too ignorant to realize it's regret.

Still going through Tevin's stream of the depression "podcast," so my opinions may change. But, so far, it's all just vague crap about depression. I'm not going to say definitively that he does or doesn't have it, but I'm not sold.

If he doesn't have it, he's faking it to get sympathy he doesn't deserve. If he does have it, he's exploiting it to get support. For depression, "support" is the worst thing to give. If you have depression, you need help, not support. Help is getting better, getting back on your feet, etc. Support is to keep your head out of the water, to keep right where you are. To better cement, you help someone back on their feet, you support someone's cause. Support won't help someone who has problems get and stay better.

Phil won't change; Phil is incapable of change. Giving him money for depression is the worst thing you can do to help him. If he's faking it, he deserves an ass-kicking. If he's depressed, he needs to either help himself or seek professional help. His fans don't need to know about it because there's nothing Phil can do to help his fans and there's nothing his fans can do to help him.

Either way, not a fan of the shit he's trying to pull right now.

Edit: "In high school, I wanted to [..] do something drastic because of the medication." ...Like? I can name things I've wanted to do. If it's cuz of the meds, it's a hell of a way to tell others "Don't use this fucking prescription"
Edit2: "Depression isn't cause and effect" Yes and no. People can be fucked up from certain events that they don't shake off, and things can - I can't believe I'm using this word - trigger responses from people with a history of anxiety and depression. Though, depression can absolutely just be there without reason. Also, sorry, didn't realize there was a dedicated thread.

Who knows? Despite one of his favorite taglines Phil would never be honest enough to actually discuss his depression in any real way. Instead he used the word depression to clear himself of any responsibility for past actions and a potential shield for any future mistakes he makes.

I think he might be depressed, but not because of depression, but simply having spells of sadness.

And I think it's the other way around, he doesn't do things because of depression, but I think that he brings it upon himself, because he is an idiot. He lashes out at people because he is abrasive as a person, then a lot of people call him out on it and then he feels depressed that people are taking the context out of his actions, because he really believes that context will make people see things like he does, because he never does anything wrong. Ever. People tell him all the time how there was nothing he could do or could've done differently.

So yeah, my theory is that he might get a few days in which he feels sad about all the negative videos out there about him, and it makes him sad because he doesn't realize that the biggest problem isn't the a-logs, detractors or critics... but him himself. So I could imagine how someone who feels like he is being constantly wronged by everyone, how his words are taken out of context all the time and thus put in a negative light... would have some days in which he felt hurt.

To Phil, the depression card is just another part of his victim card deck. He can blame his behaviour on depression, he can blame the detractors / his parents / whoever for his depression and he can use it for another pity party / sob story. If he is actually depressed then it's by his own actions, since a smarter or nicer person with the same dumb luck he had in his internet career wouldn't be in such a miserable situation.

I mean, this guy lied about so many things and went on to far distances to keep the lies alive, it is hard to believe the day he sits down in front of his camera with his audience and claims that he has depression. But like every other disease he will over-exaggerate the story and nobody else with a similar illness or disability suffers as much as he does.

Yeah, I'm another in the "he's depressed because he has to beg for money, he's under a ton of [largely self-imposed] stress, and he drinks way too much" group. I don't think he's clinically depressed.

No, he would use it (and currently uses it) to get pity bucks.

"I Think the saddest people always try their hardest to make people happy because they know what it's like to feel absolutely worthless and they don't want anyone else to feel like that." Robin Williams.

Phil is just a twat using depression to mask his cuntish personality.

Depression is caused by a lot of factors, those can be environmental, hereditary, whatever. There are a lot of people who claim they are depressed or have some form of mental illness, but they are really just unsatisfied with their circumstances BUT refuse to seek out options to help themselves improve their situations. So they pretty much fester in this self created pit of pity and unhappiness until they look around and say, oh wow, I must be depressed if this is my life..

DSP lives in a prison of his own design. He has, through his own actions, destroyed his income, pushed away significant others, created a community of people that want to see him fail, and refuses to take responsibility for his actions and is terrifyingly resistant to creating any kind of positive change in his life. Him claiming depression isn't him taking responsibility, it's justification.

Phil doesn't need a therapist, he needs a life coach. Hell, people on this forum have detailed ways he can massively improve a lot of problems, whether that's by moving out of Seattle or exercising or whatever. Phil would say to this "well, that's not how depression works!!!!" . I can guarantee you, 100 percent, if Phil was still making the amount of money he was years ago, he wouldn't be depressed. His depression is just a scapegoat to shield himself from actually having to look in the mirror and say, man, I've really fucked up. He's an opportunist, nothing more.

He doesn't need talk therapy, he doesn't need Lexapro, he doesn't need cbt workbooks, he needs to be a fucking man and start tackling his problems one at a time, instead of freaking out on Twitter about Twitch or talking about how unhappy he is and how many problems he has for 6(!?) hours a day.

Look at Anthony Bourdain. By all metrics, someone who had succeeded in his field and transcended it. Had tv shows, money, fame, and the respect of his peers, yet he still killed himself. All of that material worth, the knowledge that he had somehow validated his existence by succeeding in something, was ultimately useless when his own brain told him he was a piece of garbage and he should kill himself. That's depression. That is mental illness. Not regretting typing a mean comment on Twitter.

Now of course I'm not saying if you don't kill yourself after becoming famous, you're not really depressed. The disease is uncompromising and comes in many forms and cares little for your status. But Phil is not sick, he is stubborn. All he has to do is accept that he is the master of his own fate, but that would mean having to face down the mistakes of his past and owning them and he's not capable of doing that. Period.

This thread is tl;dr but as a random psychology sperg on the internet who has had major clinical depression for (x) years, yes. With the caveat of MILD depression.

Depression has three clinical classifications; mild, moderate and severe (or major). This article explains the differences pretty well, but basically mild depression is feeling "off" most of the time without good explanation (hardest to diagnose but easiest to fix; medication/therapy arent usually necessary, just lifestyle changes), moderate starts to affect your work and social life, and severe cripples you.

I think he genuinely has depression in the form of feeling melancholic about his life and his job, which could genuinely slide into moderate or severe depression if he doesn't get help/changes, but he does NOT have the level of depression he goes on about and tries to relate to his chat with. He seems to think he has AT LEAST moderate depression, but I highly doubt the DEPRESSION has been behind all the shitty things he has done over the years; his personality and OWN UNADULTERED CHOICES are the reason, and THEY led to his depression. Not the other way around.

I hope this makes sense... :p

Its probably not uncommon for people (especially males) to get "muh mid life crisis" at around his age too. He doesn't really do anything spectacularly fascinating or noteworthy and hasn't really achieved much.

Even for someone who is high achieving actually finding meaning in life probably starts to present as being more problematic as they enter their 40s.

His "legacy" that he likes to claim is a YouTube channel with 50,000 videos. When he first started he probably was actually looked up to by most people for being able to get paid to play video games. Add 10 years and its suddenly not as great as you thought it was.

In the US the average number of jobs a person will hold is 12 and on average they'll change employer every 4-5 years (source: https://www.thebalancecareers.com/how-often-do-people-change-jobs-2060467)

DSP has worked at his "job" for double the average rate so I don't even know how I'd feel about something like that.

Combined with his "job" not being anything like an ordinary job, he doesn't have customers or things he's done well that he can really say he achieved a lot. Beating some game on hard difficulty might make a person happy for a few hours, but its not really on the same level as being able to think that your job is actually doing something for the world.

So it may be that the common factor in the past decade of DSP's life isn't so much his personality (which possibly would've changed with differing demands at a place of employment) but rather that he's been doing the same thing, day in, day out and probably is numb to any pleasure he once had from playing video games.

I typed up an insanely long post about mental illness, my own experiences with it and what I thought about Phil's, and was about to hit post reply. Then I thought better of it. Instead I will merely state that if Phil honestly has a mental health issue like depression, then his behavior in regards to treatment is not conducive to developing a healthy and productive lifestyle. If I had to guess, I would say that he could have narcissistic personality disorder judging from his attitude and responses to events that trouble him. But, like with anything, without actual "autism papers" for Phil it's just pure conjecture as to what exactly is causing him to act the way he does. I'm reluctant to take him seriously and believe his statements, as he sounds like a 14 year old girl who has just discovered bipolar disorder forums and is shitting out posts about how bad her lithium fucks her up and bitching about how much pain she's in and demanding ass pats for being such a brave little soldier and complaining that no one understands her and that she wishes her dad would let her pierce her tongue and belly button and go clubbing with the neighbor girl who dresses like a cheap prostitute.

Send me a message and I'll send you the post I had written. It's rather long, but if you're experiencing troubles with mental illness it might be interesting and helpful to talk to someone who has been in this game as long as I have. Can't promise a speedy reply, but I do promise a reply with no judgement. Unless you're self-diagnosed after reading a webmd article. Then I'll shit on you and tell you to go to the goddamn doctor.

Just keep in mind that doctors aren't cheap. Not everyone has the money to see a doctor, let alone see a doctor over a sustained period of time.

But yeah, if you're gonna read webmd then at least read up on shit you can actually do that costs no money. Because there is a lot you can do to help that doesn't cost any money and only requires effort.
