DOOM

This is great and fairly recent:

Rewatching the story trailer - repeatedly, because fucking hell I am such a sucker for Latin chanting and that kind of music - Im wondering if that Titan is the old school Cyberdemon design.

I loved what they did with the guy in D2016, but the original is just so iconic.

E: I'm such a twat, Beth have already confirmed that about the Titan, and the Latin chanting is RIP. AND. TEAR.

lol

Strife is a seriously underrated game. I'm not sure how well it holds up now but I remember being blown away because it had entire towns and quests or w/e. It was kind of a Doom RPG. It was one of my favorite games as a kid even though I only had the demo.

On one hand I want to do another DOOM run, double dipping into the PS4 version but I don't think my spergy asshole can deal with multiplayer achievements again.

i know they have literally no value shut up

I'm literally on my third run of the game's campaign this month alone. I can't stop myself. What's worse is that I plan on getting a gaming PC in a couple months and I plan on doing another run on there too. I can't help it, Doom Eternal can't come soon enough.

I don't deal with multiplayer though. Not just Doom but in general.

Multiplayer was fun, but you could tell it was an after thought.

Eternal is so promising because of all the focus they're giving it in the promotional material. Bethesda seem to have figured out why people went so nuts over the first game and have given a ton of leeway to the dev team this time around.

I played it during the beta and thought it was alright. Then I tried it again last year and kept getting killed and I ragequit. Haven't touched it since.

I love how the game is going further than 2016 did to eschew "immersion," which is what modern games obsess over. Like how the weapons are now literally floating and rotating like in Quake, the flamethrower which makes enemies drop armor in the same way the chainsaw dropped ammo, and the new life system that respawns you right back in the fight.

At this point my only concern is they might overdo the narrative and cutscenes, but I have faith enough the team knows not to ignore that people loved the comparatively minimalist approach.

Vignettes at the start and end of a mission, but goijf into third person for sick nasty angel taunt moments would kill the flow.

I imagine at worst it’s going to be essentially the same as the ARC cutscene where you get locked in an office with Samuel Hayden and have to listen to him monologue for a minute or two. But I remember in the following level you get into an elevator and a bunch of demonic shit plays while the second half of the level loads. I’m hoping it’s mainly going to be used now such a manner to make bigger, more intricate maps by breaking up the load times.

I'm wondering if it would be considered off-topic to discuss "Doom Clone" FPS games from the 90's in this thread?

Wolfenstein 3D was the predecessor to Doom, and you had things like Heretic, Hexen, Strife, and Chex Quest directly based on the engine of the classic Doom games.

While the Build engine games like Duke Nukem, Blood, and Shadow Warrior aren't built on the same engine as Doom, they're typically considered part of the "Doom Clone" family given the similar mechanics and the era that they came out in.

Heck, there were a lot of Doom clones that I played on the PS1 that aren't even talked about anymore like Alien Trilogy (basically Aliens TC but officially licensed and including stuff from Alien 3 and the first Alien) or the Star Wars FPS game where you played as Kyle Katarn (forgot the name of the game itself)

IIRC, there was even a South Park game like this for the PS1 in the late 90's but it was pretty terrible, which was the main reason why Trey and Matt took a more active role in making Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole

Dark Forces 1 & 2.

Good news: DOOM 1, 2 and 3 have all been shadow dropped onto the Switch today.

Bad news:

Now that Bethy has Ubisoft beat for wokest vidya company they're going after EA for having the most nonsensical business practices.
Does this include Doom 3? I don't care about console ports for the first two, but Doom 3 on Switch is a cool idea and it'd suck if this shit was there too.

Correction: It actually isn't always online. You just need to login once and then it can be played offline. Reports of it asking for logins multiple times is probably due to server overload on Bethesda's end. Which is still dumb but not completely re.tarded. However, the music is fucked.

Someone on /v/ has claimed that Doom 3 does not have any DRM at all. There are several ugly looking screenshots of it on the eShop page so I'd probably wait until it we have a clear picture of how it runs on the Switch.

Given that Doom 3 ran reasonably well on seventh gen hardware, you would think it could also run on the Switch. And maybe it's just me, but the screenshots look no worse than the console ports of the BFG Edition.

Yeah fuck this shit. The login issue is across all platforms AFAIK (X1, Mobile, PS4). Also, Bethesda delested the pretty good Xbox 360 ports of the game to release this shit.

You can still use the BFG edition disc and just play the versions of doom and doom 2 on the disc on xbone

Honestly, I don't really understand the point of console ports of Doom 1 and 2 in this day and age. And it's not just because of mod support either, though that is a major factor. No, my problem is that the games just aren't built for console. Weapon switching is a nightmare; the speed at which you switch weapons is already slow in the original game, but since controllers don't have nearly enough buttons, you're forced to scroll through the various weapons. It doesn't work in tight spots, especially in Doom 2 with the Super Shotgun. It's not worth switching to the plasma gun or the BFG in a heavy firefight. About the only good thing about the console controls is that the analog controls make it easier to circle-strafe, which makes the fight with the Cyberdemon easier.

Not only that, but Doom 1 and 2 are super easy to get running on a modern computer. Even in the off chance it doesn't work (it's happened to me, trust me), source ports help alleviate that issue. Console ports are only useful when you don't have a decent PC to play the PC version, but you could easily play Doom on even the shittiest modern computer. At least Doom 3 isn't as simple to get running on modern hardware.

Is the doom 3 re-release the BFG edition?
The footage I've seen has the shoulder mounted light and it has the Lost Mission, so it's based on that.

I never minded the flashlight on PC since there's a key for it and the game never felt cheap with the dark areas. That said, I like the shoulder mount on consoles since the controller doesn't have as many buttons.

Editing to avoid double-posting, but the QuakeCon 2019 presentation of Doom Eternal is available.

The only campaign related thing here is a trailer for the new Doom Hunter enemy. I'm a little disappointed that it's all they're showing of the campaign, but seeing as how release is only 4 months away perhaps it's better that they don't spoil anything else.

Most of the presentation focuses on a new multiplayer mode, Battle Mode. It's basically a sort of asymmetrical mode where one player is the Doom Slayer and the other players play as various demons such as the Pain Elemental, Archvile, Mancubus, and Revenant, The demons have to kill the Slayer while the Slayer must kill a demon and then kill another in 20 seconds. After 20 seconds, the killed demon respawns with half-health.

This seems like a pretty cool mode since it plays more like the single-player campaign. It feels like Doom. I might give it a shot, but I'm not a multiplayer guy so who knows.
