Playing AUGER;ZENITH was probably my reintroduction into playing Doom again. I'm a sucker for all things cyberpunk and I loved DBP37 for this, a real 10/10 experience. I found another WAD in the cyberpunk style today: Neon Overdrive on Doomworld. Why not give it a go.

I played the first level but immediately got put off for two reasons. The old troonworld adage of ammo starvation with bullet sponge monsters is present in the first map. I L O V E shotgunning Arachnotrons and Barons in large open spaces, great fun. It's also set in a city environment like DBP37 yet despite using MBF21 it has not even half of the technical marvels usually employed in the DBP.

I skipped through the rest of the levels and to be honest they look better but the first map just puts me off the whole thing. I would be less critical but it is very obvious they want to ride the train the DBP37 rode in on so I'm going to compare it to that.
 
I have a silver bullet for all those unbalanced maps for vanilla play, in which the gameplay is as exciting as removing paint with a nail:

Just looking at the list of mappers, i get a feel this is going to be tedious to play. A lot of them prioritize visuals over gameplay, especially Astral Fiend, judging by his Nostalgic Entropy release from last year, which was pretty but quite boring from what i've seen. The palette is also putrid and hurts my eyes. I bet the maps will look better and more vibrant without it (more classic Doom, you know), so i'll remove the palette and give it a try to see how it is. I could be wrong. The theme is interesting, so i'll try to give the wad a fair chance to win me over. Looking at the screenshots, there are some bad signs... like, way too many poorly scaled, gigantic areas, which tells one thing - there will be some grindy, boring, circle strafe, slaughtery encounters in this. Let's see if i'm wrong.

EDIT: Okay... i think i'm fucking done with it already. It's quite underwhelming, as i feared. At least early on. I beat the first map, and had enough by the middle of Map02. The first map has 4 archvile ambushes... way too many and too repetitive for a starting map with only 100 monsters. The last encounter of the map throws 5-6 archviles at you with barely enough ammo to deal with them. The map starts slow with a few mid-tier monsters that you have to gun down with just the normal shotgun, but they actually give you all the weapons (minus the BFG) by the end, so it's not too bad in that regard. Map02 is fucking retarded - every fucking ambush throws archviles at you... it's not the difficulty, it's the predictability and repetitiveness that sucks! Both maps are fucking switch hunts with unintuitive progression. Every time you hit a switch, a bunch of shit spawns next to your ass, and after you clear it, you have to run around to see what the switch did - every single time! And while the layouts in the first two maps are fairly small and easy to navigate, switches with no clear purpose will always be a bad design trope in my book.

A lot of the enemy placements are ineffective, and just slow you down. Way too many mid-tiers in tight spaces or doors, that you just sit there and peekaboo with no real challenge or danger. Like opening a door, to a tight corridor with a mancubus or arachnotron blocking the way.
There are quite a few encounters where enemies try to ambush you from behind, but are easily cheese-able due to poor placement of closets or teleport destinations... For example, this encounter in the screenshots below, where the enemies are meant to fight the player inside the room where i stand, but they end up trapped outside the room, unable to do anything, and i'm forced to lure them in and doorfight them in a very slow and boring fashion. But even if they do enter the room as intended, it'll still be nothing more than a circle strafe encounter, with infighting, in a square flat room.

On a positive note, i do like the looks of the wad. I think it's way better without the palette. Lots of cool textures, especially those holographic ones. I don't know if they are made for this specifically, or they originate from other projects. There are Auger Zenith textures in this, right?

Yeah, here's my tip: Delete UDB and never come back. They actually had to explain to this retard how support textures work ... this is almost as bad as the guy, who didn't know how to put a Spider Mastermind into a map, but felt the need to start a community project, lmfao.

None of this tussle with DBP would have happened if Troonworld's finest pulled their heads out of their asses and started making maps that aren't like Sunlust / (insert overhyped wad) / 10,000+ enemy slaughter map. Keep it simple, stupid (Troonworld fags).

I hope that a lot of people are reading the "No fun allowed" manifesto at this point.
 
This just makes me wanna go through all the DBP wads. Ive only played emerald city, funnelcake apparitions (my favorite of the three, very Blood), and fuck global warming this is hell but i think they're pretty cool and each map has at least one cool thing in it.

There was a CD with WADEd, DeHackEd, and another one...WAD Editor, I think it was? It's been a long time, obviously. I think it was 1996 or so. I thought Doomworld was pretty awesome when I discovered it in 1999 or 2000 or whenever it was. Are any of the troons running it now originals from back then?

I'm pretty sure at least one of them is literally a janny over on r/Doom, which explains a lot. Only plebbit retards would willingly conflate discussing something (maybe even *gasp* discussing it unfavourably) with "harassment", and then use that as a basis to renege on not being the internet police. But they can say whatever they want about DB because its okay when they do it. I've long suspected they're insanely jealous of DB's consistent output of fun, good-looking and well-tuned mapsets in spite of their pathetic attempts at controlling the narrative.

TOD is on point in his video as always. He's a character for sure, but I like that. The kind of person (eccentric, speaks his mind, funny, etc) that Doomworld can't have causing discomfort in their homogenized tranny hugbox.

The year is 2025 and Doomworld is now the only place that holds any real power over the Doom community. Both in mod distribution and political views. They have knowingly sold out to Bethesda Softworks in an attempt to control the future of Doom modding by pushing a new mapping standard that nobody wanted.
Since they are the number one "community" (more like loony bin), ordinary people (mostly kids) will instantly find them via search engines. These new visitors would automatically assume, that this is the place where you could become part of the Doom community (and maybe become a mapper).
But oh-ho-ho, are those people WRONG!

Doomworld itself is a rotting carcass that only exists, because all other real alternatives (like the NewDoom forums, where a lot of important mapping lessons used to be) already died off thanks to neglect.

The Doomer Boards, the only viable alternative, have been actively sabotaged by jealous troons. DB isn't even allowed to earn a Cacoward, no matter how excellent their mapping projects are. The award itself is worthless, but the clout it generates is not. At one point, they were even treated openly as an enemy of the people, where posting said projects would get you permabanned. The ban was lifted for about 3,5 YEARS and then, just as we were about to finish writing this text file, news arrived that "Mordeth", Doomworld's token, talentless control freak & sloth (just look at his empty Wiki page), decided to make up a fictional controversy, by proclaiming that DB users actively "harass" DW users. Then he pointed at his previous warning from YEARS before and alerted them, that he would ban the popular DB projects, if they refuse to "clean up their act". By doing this, Mordeth thought he could extort and bend the Doomer Boards forum to his will. Too bad for him, he failed to realize that no one gives a shit about his little threats anymore. Regardless, he acted out his attempt at tyranny and now the DBPs are considered contraband again. Thanks to Troonworld's constant meddling, mistrust and hostility are at an all time high.

The ZDoom forums have always been infested with furries, bronies and whatever perverted scum one could think of. At this point the troons that also hold power there are just the cherry on top. That entire nuthouse deserves an exterminatus.

Meanwhile 4chan /vr/ (which is infested with actual tranny jannies) or the Russian Doom community, and many others, are all seen as trivial. Before anyone starts complaining about us not mentioning r/doom (Leddit), that shithole doesn't count and never will.

Doom became too popular and the old guard (especially moderators) actively invited the servants of Slaanesh to take their places and / or corrupt them entirely. Nepotism is rampant, grooming is a daily occurence and invitations to Discord pedo channels are handed out like candy to kids. Free speech is banned and "radical" views are punished without warning. Old and ancient members have been banned without mercy, and yet somehow the faggot (called "Creaphis") responsible for a thread that demanded the cancelling of JOHN CARMACK, the man they owe LITERALLY everything, was not publically drawn and quartered and is still bumbling around on the forum. This absolute madness is further confirmed by the admins, which have openly stated that "Doomworld is not a democracy".

But when you think it can't get any worse, it just does. Doomworld keeps literal pedophiles and transgender camwhores as prominent members. People like "OniriA" – a guy who created a map with pictures of children placed inside a sado-masochistic sex dungeon, as an outlet of his own disturbing fantasies. When he was asked why he did it, he lied about it. He explained that these pictures have a spiritual meaning, and then he proclaimed himself to be a transgender person of color, and was promptly spared from the ban. He also silently changed his nickname to "SitarA" a few months later to try and make people forget who he is and what he did. Andrea Rovenski, previously known as John A. Rovenski (CyberDemon531) is another example of a useless waste of space. It's another guy who thinks he’s a woman, and is kept as a prominent member of the forum. It’s funny how they preach leftist politics all the time, but when it comes to this fag, they quickly forget that he was once banned from "Games Done Quick" for wearing a MAGA hat. He’s also an internet whore, willing to perform sexual acts on camera for handouts, because he’s a jobless e-beggar who lives with his parents. He once shoved a dildo up his ass on a livestream. Then there's also the loooooong story about Marisa the Magician from the ZDoom forums, who tried to groom children on social media. They not only allowed him to stay on Doomworld, but they’re actually defending him.

Scuba Steve, a leader of Troonworld, has proudly called his moderators, that allow these atrocities to happen, a "ultra progressive cabal of communist Antifa socialists".

It is a creatively stifling environment, that has chased many talented people out of the community, just because they were unorthodox or unliked. Political and social biases are rampant and a so called "fun police" is actively hunting for any wrongdoers, going as far as reading private messages between users, to find a reason to get someone banned. They are not afraid to misrepresent someones actions or outright lie to excise people, because of their bias. This is antithetical to the sort of Metal / Punk Rock counterculture Doom was part of and that a lot of Gen X and Millenials grew up with. It is depressing to think about how much healthier the community would be, if they ran things differently. Troonworld is like a corpo office job with a bloated HR department.

- The website has abandoned or hidden almost all primary functions, it is mainly a discussion board now. It doesn't even have a working news section. Almost nothing about it resembles a proper website with content anymore. Just recently they randomly shut off a vital part of the forum that displayed popular posts, because some troon started bitching again.
It used to be normal for ambitious mappers to create sub-webpages of their projects, hosted on that websites. Now all you have is the forums and the Cacowards, the rest is hidden or gone. What kind of a soulless environment is that, especially for such a classic like Doom?

- The downloads section is a broken pile of shit that hasn't been worked on for more than half a decade. It only features idgames archive stuff up until 2018. It has tons of missing pictures, broken links etc. The original idgames archive is still heavily in use and they still forced it to deactivate the comments section on maps. If you, as a mapper, posted anything in the idgames archive post 2018 and you're not part of the secret troon club community, you're screwed. No comments, no clout, nothing. That thing you posted is now forgotten. You have a higher chance of winning in the lottery, than someone ever seeing, playing and giving feedback to your published work. The worst part about this is that nobody on Troonworld seems to give a crap, no one takes responsibility, not a single fucking user there in all those years stepped forward for an attempt to fix the situation. All you ever see now in the review section are dipshits "reviewing" the same old wads over and over again to earn good boy points on the forums.

- Forcing people to adapt to generic and boring mapping standards. Remember Real Time Strategy games? Remember how they got completely fucked by eSports and Compfags demanding every single game to be a StarCraft gookclicker clone? That is exactly what is happening right now with Doom. Speedrunners demand demo compatibility, thus any source port that is not compatible is deemed by them as worthless. An entire generation of speedrunning tryhards has ruined the variation, creativity and fun of mapping. Did you try to release a GZDoom map on Doomworld that is not called myhouse.wad? It will be ignored 99% of the time. Doom mapping used to be more than just Vanilla/Limit-Removing, Boom & MBF21 (all the same shit essentially). Now all you have 90% of the time is either one side creating shovelware demo-compatible wads (mostly slaughtershit, speedmaps and godawful community projects) and the other fabricating overblown GZDoom mods for custom weapons. When was the last time you've seen anyone create a classic Doom gameplay wad with ZDoom features that add some variation and surprises? But you know what really took the piss? Doomworld collaborating with Nightdive Studios to enforce the ID24 standard, a modified variant of MBF21, a commercial standard which many ports are not compatible with and which further enforces Demo compfag compatibility at the cost of advanced features. Xaser Acheron, the main culprit & collaborator behind all this, actively goes around the Doomworld forums to stalk, harass and belittle other users to switch to MBF21 & ID24.

- An abysmal modern mapping culture. Users on Doomworld waste more time dreaming and writing about things they wish to get done, than actually getting shit done. Mentally handicapped retards and underage children keep spamming the same kind of "first map" threads with *horrible 5 minutes of work - projects* that would have been deleted instantly back in the good old days. Since there is no free speech anymore, only the "nice guys" are left, and they either give them a pat on the back, post a stupid instruction video from YouTube or write long-winded essays that serve no purpose, other than make the poster feel superior and the new guy utterly confused. True critiscism or "gatekeeping" could get you instantly banned. This spam always clogs up the view of the first release forum page, which can mean life or death for actual serious mapping efforts. Toxic positivity has created an environment of insecurity and shovelware mappers. Speaking of "mapping efforts", this is where we come to to the usual breaking point for each mapper. They have three options: Join / create a community project, keep making solo projects or become an outcast (i.e. don't bother with Troonworld).

- The "Cacowards" have been a joke for a long time. They are nothing more than a gimmick for the Kool Kidz Klub, to egojerk themselves and their overrated works at the end of each year. Usually voted by the same people who call all the shots around the forum, it is not uncommon for these same fags to vote for their own works, or the works of their forum friends and suckups. They then claim that the awards are "an unbiased tradition". What is awful about these awards is how they contribute to the declining mapping culture, by creating standards that go against what classic Doom is all about. Fun and quality gameplay are usually thrown out the window for dogshit maps and megawads that are considered "art" by a bunch people on estrogen pills. Needlessly overdetailed, colorless abominations with repetitve visuals, desaturated or oversaturated palettes, or they all look like Sunder and Sunlust clones. These are the only things that get any praise. As a result the forums got invaded by newbie mappers who make the same repetitive "one color high contrast void slaughter maps" over and over, without having a shred of experience with the original iWADs (Doom, Doom 2 etc.), and will never achieve a basic understanding of what makes Doom great, all because they want to have a shot at a Cacoward.

1. Most community projects(CP) on DW are created by attention whores who have no talent, no ambition and no work culture. The people who join them are usually just as lazy and untalented and hope to get carried by more prominent users who submit "better" maps. There have been untold amounts of CPs that were either abandoned, delayed for years, half-assed, had to be finished by someone else entirely, or had an insurrection where the original guy was kicked out. Many more never even had a proper start. But the worst thing of all by far are projects that are worked on entirely via Discord channels. Imagine trying to get anything done in a chaotic environment of endless spam, that is filled from top to bottom with trannies, which cry all day long about their miserable lifes and then get absolutely nothing done, only to end it like Kurt Cobain before they even have half of their map finished.

A lot of hosts also start community projects and lead mappers by the nose for months, only to then abandon them for made up reasons, and then never get punished for it. The incompetence goes as far as some hosts not even being able to make a proper square room in Doom Builder or don't know how to use SLADE3 to pack a .wad file. That is not a joke, it really isn't. Why are handicapped kids, who don’t know what SLADE3 is for, allowed to trick people to map for them with no immediate consequences? Another good example of poor CP management are otherwise capable mappers, who can lead CPs, but don’t follow their own deadlines, because they’re afraid to offend someone, or because they can't bring themselves to release a CP with less than 32 maps. It’s not uncommon to see CPs with a set deadline, wait for over a year (or sometimes, 10 years, like that "UDINO" bullshit) for the mappers to then (maybe?) finish their works. It’s basically a waste of time for anyone who joins such projects. They bust their asses to make their maps in time, only for the project to then get delayed for months, because a handful of morons, who want to drag the whole thing down.

Most of these idiots think they have what it takes to make something the likes of the venerable Community Chest series, from which they usually take the textures from. But here's the difference, when the CCs were made, Doom was still a true niche fanbase with very dedicated and talented hardcore nerds that didn't cut their dicks off and procrastinate all year long.

2. Solo projects: People who do this either improve at a steady pace and some day create a good megawad (very unlikely, it's too much effort for most and considering how unrewarding it must feel to get completely fucked over by forum politics after such a long time of work) or go full retard and make shitty low effort projects (speedmaps, slaughtershit, unrefined miniwads etc.) Some even go as far as actively stealing from others. Think about it, there are hundreds of thousands of threads on Doomworld you can browse through, made by people that are most likely dead and the download link still works. Yoink! It has created a culture of backstabbing, ghosting, mistrust and gaslighting. And even we advise others to not fucking share your hard work with anyone on Doomworld. Either way, at some point the non-stupid individuals will realize that nobody seems to give a fuck about their work on Doomworld, no matter how many weeks and months they worked on maps. That's because they weren't part of the Kool Kids Klub and didn't suck off every other user for approval. That's the point where they have to choose again... do they go join the cult of Slaanesh to get their daily asspats for their little projects or become outcasts?

3. Outcasts - That's essentially KiwiFarms, the Doomer Boards and whatever else is not on the left-leaning toxic positivity scale. People who do their own stuff far away from the infested Troonworld & ZGroom forums and Discords. We get no clout, no fame, no bitches, but also no genderswapping retards that would actively sabotage our hobby. We're branded as filth, as nazis, you know ... the usual. We just like to create maps and voice our opinions openly, no matter how "offensive" it is. Fuck your feelings.

- The Doom Wikis - They are all connected to ZDoom & Doomworld so the following all makes sense: They are poorly maintained and sometimes downright useless. Missing information on critical subjects everywhere. Some pages are written without any useful examples or any proper guidance and force you to go up and down the article tree until you actually come across a solution for your problem (if at all). If you're a mapper who wants to learn new things, you're forced to browse through decade old wads to copy & paste functions from them, browse forum posts or repeatedly ask for help in Discords. Some asshole will read this part and go "lol skill issue". But let me ask you, what the fuck would you do if you're new to mapping and suddenly (for whatever reason) all Doom forums vanished and you got the error "R_TextureNumForName: SKY3" or "I_SignalHandler: Exiting on signal: signal 11" in your DSDA or PrBoom ports? Go fuck yourself.

T.L.D.R. - Do not trust Doomworld, do not mingle with mentally ill retards and their enablers, and most importantly: Never cut your dick off.
