The charges against him: 18 U.S.C. § 875(c) Transmission of threats in interstate commerce,which prohibits the transmission in interstate or foreign commerce “any communication containing any threat to kidnap any person or any threat to injure the person of another," per the document.

The suicide threats are new but consistent with my view that the emails to his mom were a cry for help that went ignored. For those of you tardy to the party, Harris was institutionalized by his family in April 2021 at the behest of UCLA police, released a month later, and attempted to fly from his home in North Carolina to Los Angeles, at which point a restraining order was filed against him.

More on his family dynamic. Very, very normal.

It goes on to say that Matthew moved to Colorado in summer 2021 and tried to buy a .38 Special revolver on November 2, 2021 but was turned down due to the restraining orders in California, which he lied about on his application. I think the indictment answers a number of questions some folks have posed, most notably @Next Task . I’ll pull out some important bits to establish a timeline:

- January and March 2021: Harris sends emails to his mother discussing his intent to kill Katherine Ritchie, a colleague of his from Duke that he was obsessed with, who was now working at UC Irvine. In the March email, he tells her he doesn’t intend to hurt anyone else but intends to kill himself. It’s not known if his mother read the emails (she says she didn’t) but if she did, she never contacted law enforcement.
- March 2021: Harris has been assigned to a “research group“ where he still has contact with students. He sends 20 emails to a group of female students with links to videos of pornographic content. It’s not clear whether the UCLA Police Department were involved by then.
- April 2021: The college police are now definitely involved. Harris’s mother emails his department letting them know about the emails she has received from him and that he appears to be mentally disturbed. He has shown up at her home in North Carolina without warning, and has threatened her with violence and pushed her up against a wall. It appears he may have been quietly suspended from his teaching duties following the incidents in March. During this month, Katherine Ritchie is informed about his threats and wants to press charges. However, his mother agrees to send him to the funny farm in North Carolina.
- May and June 2021: Harris is released from the funny farm and, according to his own writing in his manifesto, follows a white woman named Sandra to Boulder, CO. The FBI and the police do a bunch of legal filings that will prohibit Harris from obtaining a gun and issue a restraining order prohibiting his return to any UC campus. The restraining order is extended for three years.
- June 2021-November 2021: Harris appears to be obeying the law. It doesn’t look like the FBI or the UCLA police intend to file charges for the threats he made to Katherine Richie.
- November 2021: Harris attempts to buy a .38 Special in Boulder, but his application is rejected because of the legal filing done in CA to prevent him obtaining a gun. He lied on the form, stating that he had never been committed to a mental institution, which is a crime. He is prohibited from buying the gun, but it doesn’t appear that law enforcement knew he tried to obtain one.
- End of January 2022: Harris emails his manifesto to about 35 of his acquaintances and colleagues. Several of them contact the FBI.
- Start of February 2022: The police come to interview him, but he is initially unwilling to cooperate. They also observe that he appears to be mentally disturbed again. He emails a colleague, letting her know the police have visited him and he intends to kill all of them. They visit him again in riot gear, and Harris eventually decides to come quietly.

It’s not clear exactly when UCLA knew he was having serious mental problems, as he was still in contact with students in March 2021. The student who did an AMA on Reddit said his mental state appeared to deteriorate more around “finals week,” which would have been in December 2020 if it was the preceding fall semester. The indictment is unclear on when he stopped actively teaching classes and was then reassigned to the research group (or even whether the “research group” was a seminar course, which could have been a possibility). Regardless, him going to North Carolina is an indicator, in my opinion, that he had been discharged from his duties by early April of 2021.

I messed up some of the dates and went back to correct them. It appears he worked at UCLA until early April of 2021. I can’t recall whether the student who was in the AMA was enrolled in Harris’s fall course or the winter one because, since, as you pointed out, UCLA is on a quarter system, and “exam week” for the winter course could have been as early as mid-March.

Interesting they must have stopped him having free reign then from June 2020 onwards since their system lists him as teaching no other courses.
