I lived with a person who developed schizophrenia culminating in a psychotic episode. In hindsight the signs were there but at the time I guess it’s harder to see. It doesn’t help that academics are already considered eccentric, so he would have been given the benefit of the doubt.

Ditto. I’ve seen schizophrenia up-close and personal. The onset can be rapid and unexpected, and it can radically alter someone’s personality. He might have been relatively normal when he got his degree. Then, when he started teaching, stress got to him and fried his brain. It can take anything from a few weeks to a few months for someone to decline enough that they start showing symptoms of psychosis.

Because he has Schizophrenia, and this is what untreated schizophrenia can result in - a complete mental breakdown which can end in violence as your perception of reality becomes totally divorced from what reality is. Schizophrenia can cause hallucinations, chaotic behavior, asocial behavior or disregarding many social norms, extreme anxiety and paranoia, and more.

To him, all of this makes sense, because there’s some little thing his brain picked up on. And then it starts making connections and patterns where there aren’t any. Which is why he may randomly mention penguins in one sentence then how much he wants to bang Android 18 in the next. To you or I, there isn’t a connection here. To him, somehow, these things became linked. When he’s “lucid”, everything he’s taking in is going to end up part of his various delusions. Schizophrenia is a horrible mental illness as it’s almost impossible for the sufferer to realize that they’re sick - the perception of reality they have is completely different to what reality is.

Schizophrenia, like autism, is actually a hyperconnectivity disorder. In both conditions, parts of the brain are wired together with higher density than they should be. What it does to the neural network is fascinating.

Pls pretend all of the peaks and the scuffed quality is intentional to really emphasize the schizo vibes. It is definitely not laziness/incompetence on my part. No way.

Two things cause scratchy audio; breathing on mics and shaking them. Both can be attenuated by using a wind sock, pop filter and/or shock mount. Hear a rumble on the audio? That's handling noise, or vibrations transmitted through the floor and into the mic. Even the cheesiest of cheese-o mics sounds way better with a shock mount and a pop filter.

a few questions as you seem to be up on it:

as seen below, this Matthew C. Harris is quite often in complete contradiction to himself on anything but hate, narcissism, and offshifted blame for his failures. do schizos so often swing between conclusions like that as they unravel? from my own limited interactions they usually seem to be solely focused on one conclusion to the exclusion of all others.
