Schizophrenics make plenty of inconsistent decisions, have mutually contradictory beliefs, and can rapidly swing between conclusions. While they like to hyperfixate on one thing, this doesn’t mean that they don’t also get caught up in other ideas and theories. I follow a schizoid that obsesses about -

Now, Harris is still early on in his psychosis, and his is pretty severe. The guy I’m talking about is still relatively functional, and “stable and lucid” despite his wonky beliefs. He’s older, has been this obsessed and psychotic for at least 30 years, and has had certain delusions reinforced by others. But he has different “tracks” that he follows, then eventually weaves into his overall narrative. Harris is extremely sick and expecting consistency from him is really not anything to expect for a while. I doubt he’s ever going to be able to interact with normal society.

It really doesn’t express your true self at all. Schizoids can and do fixate on just minor things. His general preference for blonde women before can morph easily into his strange obsession with blonde anime girls because he read a hentai once. Penguins getting bigger being bad? He stumbled once on a video about big ancient penguins. None of these things would to a normal brain, on their own, really be important. To a schizophrenic brain, they can become extremely important. Patterns are everything, which is why religious delusions are very common among schizophrenics, and why plenty of really strange religious people probably should be catagorized as schizoids but the psychiatric community really doesn’t want to touch on that subject too much.

If his philosophy doctorate demanded a lot of look into various cultures and values and how people from different backgrounds see the world differently, and that’s when his schizophrenia was getting rolling, him suddenly going NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER makes a lot of sense to me. He’s obsessing over what he sees as his own cultural perspective, right or wrong. He’s probably online and if you’re online, it takes about three minutes for someone to blame X ethnicity for every problem. Normal people shrug this off. Schizophrenia to the degree it is in him would require someone external to get him treated. Many symptoms of schizophrenia in the degree he clearly has make someone unable to reality check themselves. He would not be capable of knowing how outlandish his beleifs are.

One of the big issues though is as you state they need to be medicated and a lot of times they are in capable of making logical choices on that medication. Medication won't stop hallucinations or delusions they do have to put work in but somoene as far gone as he is. The blame is on the fact that no one external did anything when it was clear he was escalating. The mental health services failed him especailly when it was clear his own family knew he was a danger by having to get a restraining order against him when he was released.

From everything posted about his history, his forensic history, psych history and his own manifesto. He probably has schizophrenia that requires the old a-typicals and even that may not work with him. Some schizophrenics have to be committed for life because they dont respond to medication and are always a danger to themselves and others.

Even if the people around him "failed him" no one could have legally gotten him to take antipsychotics against his will which absolutely would have after a few weeks reduced the delusions and hallucinations.

If it's bipolar he may have to take a mood stabilizer as well.

He might have been relatively normal when he got his degree. Then, when he started teaching, stress got to him and fried his brain. It can take anything from a few weeks to a few months for someone to decline enough that they start showing symptoms of psychosis.

Schizophrenia, like autism, is actually a hyperconnectivity disorder. In both conditions, parts of the brain are wired together with higher density than they should be. What it does to the neural network is fascinating.

It does seem though he was involuntarilly commmited in 2021. In that scenario he would have been forcefully medicated. But yes outside of that situation no one could force him, they could threaten and even attempt to recommit him with his record though.

I think it's because his PhD was mostly bunk, hence why he got a bunk salary. The real money probably goes to professors who've had tenure and who teach more substantial subjects for longer periods of time.

Lets clear a few things on this subject since I have seen this number of times in this thread. The dude was not a "Professor". There are three levels of a PhD:

1) PhD Student
2) Post-Doc PhD
3) Professor

Matthew C. Harris was in stage 2, a Post-Doc PhD. For those not in the know, getting your PhD is not the end stage at all. After you pass the review, make revisions, and get that document that says you're a PhD, you go on to the Post-Doc stage where you are supposed to work at various universities, not your graduating university, for 1-3 years time both to gain experience in teaching and running classrooms and to prepare your dissertation and other articles for publishing. It is essentially contract work and almost all PhDs have to do this regardless of your field unless you are some sort of superstar and made a breakthrough in research. A post-doc should compliment your skills you gained as a PhD student in teaching, researching, and writing.

It is only after a university hires you, not as a "post-doc" but as a "professor", then you get to be a Professor. Until then you're a Post-Doc which is what Matthew C. Harris was.

Actually, California surprisingly enough doesn't have affirmative action. He probably just didn't show how insane his throught process was in his dissertation or the professors who helped him with his Masters and PHD work helped him tone it down I imagine.

Just because it isn't enforced by law doesn't mean it isn't self-enforced. I don't think you can find any organization that doesn't have affirmative action, and very few that don't have it explicitly in some guidelines.
If you're considered part of one of the sacred groups it's very hard to not get a white collar job if you manage to convey anything for someone to argue you're qualified.

And for anyone having a hard time getting a job in a field not known for its diversity seriously just insist you're the opposite sex until you're communicating with people not in HR. Even if you're honest with the hiring manager about bullshitting he'll get trouble for being toxic if he tells anyone, and he'll have a hard time arguing why you shouldn't get hired in any case.
