Archie Panjabi comes across so bland compared to Anita Dobson. Anita can actually act deceptively sweet and menacing; Archie, in spite of ominous music, Ncuti doing his scared little baby face at her, killer high heels and loads of eyeliner, just doesn't come across that way.
I actually felt the opposite; the whole Flood thing was somewhat intriguing but as soon as Panjabi was on screen she hammed it up appropriately and made Dobson look less interesting, even if she took some cues from Michelle Gomez's Missy.
Gatwa grew on me a bit and I thought his performances improved in his second series but he's still the worst since 2005. I wasn't familiar with him but I'm genuinely shocked they picked someone with so little range (ditto with tranny Rose although my expectations were obviously lower for some tranny retcon sideshow than for the
main character). I much preferred Belinda to Ruby as a companion. Wasn't interested in any of Ruby's adoptive family shit, while the circumstances of him meeting Belinda meant their relationship developed more naturally. The Poppy bit had real pathos and was probably the best thing in Gatwa's entire run. Even if they were box-ticking in their diversity, the companions were my favourite thing about Whittaker's Doctor so a bit of a downgrade in that area.
I thought the stories were largely as forgettable as Capaldi and Whittaker's but with the added annoyance of drag queens. As someone else mentioned, Graham Norton popping up was funny and goes to show how Ecclestone's one season finale included futuristic versions of
Big Brother and
The Weakest Link and he's still highly regarded.
It's baffling to me that RTD can't write interesting gay characters or reference gay culture in an even slightly interesting way now. I'd be fine if it didn't have any gay characters at all, but the very first time we saw Ecclestone's Doctor go into the future there was a maniacal scheming tranny (played by a real woman, those were the days) so obsessed with plastic surgery all that was left was a thin layer of skin. Tennant's Doctor at his lowest point, imprisoned by the Master, was soundtracked by Scissor Sisters. Captain Jack, powered by Barrowman swinging his cock around on set. Now we just get AGP skinwalkers and robots who state their own pronouns.
I'm expecting the next companions to be a throuple. Since Tennant 2 it's felt like a bit of a conveyor belt of returning characters and settings along with the mess of bigeneration. Not optimistic about what they've got planned for Billie.
