On the topic of search engines, has anyone else had problems with searx.me? I haven't been able to get it to work in a few months.

OK, so I've been digging through searchengineland.com posts trying to get the full goss on this.
Oath is a stupid name that Verizon chose to use for their merged Yahoo and AOL.

In January, Oath was rebranded to 'Verizon Media', which I guess is still in process given the TCPA warnings on their sites still say 'Oath'.
Yahoo Search, as far as I can tell, has not existed as a real thing since 2010, when it began being based on Bing results, and using Microsoft search ads.

In 2015- Yahoo shifted to being allowed to show some of their own ads, or a third party's, rather than Bing Ads, and to deliver some search results from a non-Bing source. At this point, they also started delivering some search results from Google, rather than Bing.

In 2019- Verizon went back to 100% Bing ads because they just want the money. I'm unsure as to whether that means they also only deliver search results from Bing- but fundamentally, if we can look at Bing, see that Bing is broken, look at Google, Verizon Media/Oath/Yahoo's only other known partner, which may no longer be tied in with them, see that Google is not broken, that means the root of the problem is Bing, right?

Makes for quite the human centipede, if DDG is getting services from Yahoo/Oath/Verizon Media, which gets them from Bing/Microsoft.

I don't really use it, but if you have issues with one of the Searx instances you could try using another. Or self-host if you're motivated enough.

Why bother using these search engines if they're going to fuck around with the results?

I'm ditching duck duck go, but this Yandex seems pretty awesome.
Switched since watching this thread evolve and realizing what I had long suspected in that DDG was too good to be true. So far Yandex is solid. I will stick with it until it's (((infiltrated)))

Boomer question: Any way to make Yandex's interface english, or is it permanently in Glorious Cyrillic? I mean the search results all come back in English so it's fine either way, but I get the feeling the answer to my question is 2 or 3 clicks on the main page.

all puns aside it's obvious this was either a mistake or a decision from higher up with oath

We know that at least one of our cows always tries to go as high up as possible. It wouldn't surprise me if they've been canvassing Oath in the same way Cloudflare has been canvassed before and pressure has been on our hosts and payment processors.

Don't get too cozy with Yandex, by the way. They too are compromised: https://tass.com/economy/1062262
Oh, no. The FSB might read my search results.

I would rather have the FSB and Chinese intelligence crawling through my computer's hard drive constantly and watching me on spycams- they, after all, have no reason to do me harm- than have the Israeli/US surveillance-industrial complex watching my search results to use them to bankrupt and kill me.

This is probably not the most appropriate thread to raise these questions, but one of the cofounders of Yandex, Ilya Segalovich, now deceased, was certainly a member of the tribe. As for the more major figure in the company, Arkady Volozh, if you search that surname on any geneology website you will find a surfeit of Lazars and Mendels and Abrahams.

That being said, Volozh is a post-millenium oligarch. He's had to contend with the Putin government, so he's had to demonstrate at least some national loyalty towards Russia, and that lessens the danger Yandex poses to freethinkers in occupied countries. Nor can I find any record of Yandex/Mail.Ru doing good people wrong.

Is Oath above Bing? No, Verizon Media/Oath/Yahoo take their search results from Bing. Bing has been compromised.

I'm just saying don't get cozy with it, they're not the good guys, they're just the lesser of two evils
