Duke Nukem Forever 2001 Build Discussion

Breaking news: we have a roadmap on the Duke Nukem 2001 Revival project.

Lots of progress is being done. We have SHIT TONS of fixes, lots of willing coders and voice actors; the community really is fixing the game. If anybody here has those skills, get in. The more people getting shit done, the better.

We're doing what 3D Realms and Gearbox couldn't; releasing the damn game.

I think that was their plan at some point, just look at the 2003 version of the game.

It's the 2001 version but with graphics closer to Doom 3, but instead they restarted development at least 2 more times before we got the final shitty game.
See, even that version doesn't look too hot to me, the plastic look some games had around that time has aged worse than games from a few years earlier, the 2001 build looks a lot more pleasing to the eye imo.

The 2001 build is what really, really should have been finished and released.

(Forgot to reply to this.)

There was an official build engine expansion for one of the Duke 3D re-releases. I never played it, but it was largely ignored due to featuring a bunch of wokeshit instead of humour.

Wow, is that an unfunny joke.

Wasn't this the same guy who reviewed a Moonman mod for Doom? 2016 feels like a different era now
It's literally an entirely different world if you're talking 2016 but pre-November 11th.

For all that's shitty about life in the 2020s, stuff like this brings a tear to my eye.

I guess that's probably the future of worthwhile media is people taking matters into their own hands.

Certainly people have got to realize by now that you've got to gatekeep those people the fuck away from everything?

The 2001 E3 DNF easily could have come out in late 2001 or early 2002 with ease. Had Broussard just used some of the money to increase the amount of workers he had, than this wouldn''t have been an issue. At most he would've gottten some 7.5's here and there for it being a Duke flavored Half-Life with an aging Unreal 1 engine and not living up to the insane hype that 3D Realms paraded for 5 years straight at that point, but it would've nowhere close to the shit it got when it finally came out in 2011.

To be fair; TF2C/OP were destroying themselves. Troons plagued those projects and would outright blacklist servers that they felt were problematic and contrary to their idea of playing the game.
It's a shame, it would have been a decent game all things considered. Plus back then Duke Nukem was still a well known enough franchise that the fact that it's on a slightly older engine wouldn't have mattered that much. It's more a victim of bad timing than anything else, but sadly Randy Pitchford eventually got his hands on it.

And instead we are stuck with an undercooked Halo clone that wears a stolen Duke skin.

Personally I would love a new Duke Nukem game with modern software and graphics, technology isn't advancing too rapidly this time to make that a potential issue. Sure people will complain about the game's violence and maybe a little sexual content but critics have always been on about that crap. Plus 1996 Duke is relatively mild by today's standards. It's hard to believe now, especially in the shadow of the GTA franchise.

Speaking as someone who's helped on mods for various games, no. They don't.

Lots of modders nowadays have this weird cargo cult style obsession with emulating how devs work. Not realizing that hiring 30 coders is worse than hiring one really talented one. And then there are dick sucker trannies who are just there to say they're devs and get arse pats whilst doing no work.

I want to believe any DNF project is able to just tell the troons to piss off. But nerds aren't known for their backbone.

I was going to break it off in George's not yours. But if you insist on making this a sodomy orgy I will oblige.
Oh, wasn't aware you were speaking literally about him. I thought you were metaphorically referring to me. I'll help you ram that sucker in then.

DNF's cover was changed for UK audiences because of depictions of smoking.

Yes, despite every other thing that happens in the game, the character smoking a cigar on the cover is where they put their foot down.

I mean, I know this is the UK, but Jesus fucking Christ...

This would be a lot easier if we get another leak, the leak we have is supposedly from October 2001, when there's people who supposedly have some early to mid 2002 builds out there. I'm skeptical of this 2001 Revival Project actually managing to do the whole thing (then again modders have made entire game remakes without most the work done for them from the ground up like Black Mesa), but if a second build gets leaked thats around 70% or so complete instead of the 50% or so, I'd be surprised if said Revival Project wasn't completed.

This is fucking great, love this roadmap. Broussard must be seething something fierce.

Are you guys concerned about Discord shutting down the server? be sure to have a super-sekrit, handpicked dev-only server, just in case.

A lot of us are doing this stuff on their own, not much is shared yet. Even if the server gets nuked by Randy slaves, literally everybody who has downloaded the game is able to pass the torch. Plus, the head honchos say that if things go wrong, there are back up devs ready to shit.

We ain't lettin' those rat bastard Gearbox boys fuck this up. It's time for Duke to REALLY shine.

Could do the intelligent thing and create an IRC server.

Do we even have the full picture of what happened? afaik Valve still hasn't let them update their mod.

I was thinking more of Randy seething. This was technically his personal hostage to make himself feel empowered. I unfortunately feel it will meet the same fate as the Duke 3D Remake if word gets out.

Gotta say, if the fans can indeed pull off what they are planning to do, which is to use this leaked build and expand it into a full campaign, then I am really excited. Maybe there really is still life left in the series after all.

Civvie is gonna make a video, in about two weeks according to him. He doesn't seem to be too concerned about burning bridges with Randy Bitchford...
That's fair. It makes sense to give it time for the leak to settle down and for us to understand more before making a video on it.
