Dwarf Fortress - Despite the multiple let's sperg threads, we never had a general

Anybody have anything of interest to share? It seems like the brothers are still chugging away at the Steam release, I'm placing bets on a Q3 release this year. The replacement artist they hired seems to be more experienced and is putting out things at a decent rate as well.

Is there anyone who want to play a bloodline game?
Basically:
1 Season per player
Write up an AAR.
1st person who comments after gets chosen so long as they haven't played before.

I'll roll die for embark profile I guess if there's enough interest Or we can just go terrifying sand desert with heavy aquifer and no minerals.

We usually start a separate thread like this: https://kiwifarms.net/threads/dwarf-fortress-community-succession-fortress-2020-year-1.64317/

Also I'm a bit leery of just one season because people dilly dally and it would barely move at all. I generally want a volcano, jacked up metals everywhere, and jack up the savagery a bit so it isn't a complete cakewalk. I don't find scrounging for scraps of goblinite all the time very much fun.

It's pretty common to have a poll at the beginning too. If you do start a thread, consider @'ing anyone who has played in the past who is still here.

Yeah a whole year would be better so that gives players the chance to have more !!FUN!! with the fort.

I wouldn't be against another succession fort - it was thanks to that thread that I got interested and I think I'm ready to take part and completely ruin help build an awesome fort this time around!

I was just wary of starting a new thread as a newer user. Had to lurk a bit more.
What about two years? Embark on a terrifying volcanic jungle would be hilarious. My last one died in 10 seconds since the rain immediately zombified everyone.

Remember that really funny reference to Kiwi Farms somebody put on the DF Wiki's Kiwi Man page? Well while prepping for the first post in my LP thread I discovered some spineless baby who wasn't even logged into the wiki decided it was "inappropriate" and deleted it.

Wouldn't want anyone to be offended playing a game where you can burn children alive in a magma trap.

I haven't played DF a lot in the past year or so, there are some features and bugfixes that I want to see added before I can really get back into it. That's how it usually goes though, I've been playing each version of the game since 2009. I understand why Tarn is focusing on the graphics and UI for the Steam release so I'm not getting impatient in the slightest.

I haven't played dwarf fortress in years. Did they finally add an actual game to it? There was zero balance in anything and the last few things I've seen of Toady was that he seemed to be kinda tired of it all and just wanted off. Is that still the general impression he makes?

What version did you play? I started playing about a year before the latest version came out.

Speaking of new stuff, the Steam version is looking really close to done. They're doing the tutorial now, something the game has really been in desperate need of for the 99% or so of people who don't want to consult a gigantic wiki every five minutes when playing a game.

That's usually about the last thing in a dev cycle.

I'm sticking with old DF because I prefer the retro look and the higher difficulty curve should keep normies away. But I hope those looking to try the Steam release enjoy it!

The release info is up, a few things missing from launch:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/975370/Dwarf_Fortress/

Trailer:

Classic mode likely won't be available (ie ascii) at launch but will be soon™. Same for Steam Workshop (this could be huge when it drops). Arena mode soon too. Linux and Mac ports in near future but not at launch. Ditto more graphics. Can't believe they don't have a pre-order up yet on Steam.

Above said, one can still play the OG (for free). Will be interesting to see how this version fairs on a steam deck.

Today I found something that made me laugh.

Turn on captions. There's English subtitles.

I'm enjoying the new version - the new UI definitely still requires some work, and its still a thing that needs to be 'learned' but its no longer a sheer vertical cliff - it feels a lot closer to just a normal indie early access settlement builder, in the sense that most of the UI changes that are needed are just informational, organization, or quality of life. The core is good.

The modding support is also a nice touch - no more destructive overlapping multiple installs, you just add shit at world gen, and its part of that particular world. Obviously still early days, but adding new materials and items was a breeze right out the gate, even if I haven't figured out where to craft my damned muskets yet.

Excited to finally try this game out, first impressions are it looks fantastic and the music is very good

Thinking of buying it.

I know I won't regret it, but it's DF, a game I haven't gotten into that takes a lot of time to get into...

I'm probably not going to get it. I prefer the retro aesthetic (and I refuse to part with Kruggsmash's texture pack) but I can see why people like it so far.

It'll be interesting to see what happens next. I imagine two different types of communities will pop up - those working with the Steam release, and those working with the og game. If they're not updating the original anymore I think it'll give people a chance to really experiment what they can do with the last build.
