Dwarf Fortress - Despite the multiple let's sperg threads, we never had a general

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
It's really comforting to check the thread and see people noticed the same things.
The game feels like it took this massive step back. It feels less alive, less dynamic. People have assured me nothing has actually changed but there are all these minor things that remove both the charm and make the experience feel boring overall. A lot of the time I feel like I'm just watching paint dry. To be honest it wasn't that different in the 'classic' version but the game was so transparent about what your dwarves were thinking and feeling that even the beginning felt engaging.
The UI also feels like a mess. It's not optimized well and the game overall feels more clunky to me than it did in classic with the old menu and such.
Like always, zoomers are quick to latch onto something and try and gaslight oldheads but for I can't help but feel like the Dwarf Fortress that's on Steam isn't the Dwarf Fortress I've played for years. As a long-time Dwarf Fortress fan I'm fairly disappointed.

If he's on the DF forum then I guarantee he'll be made an admin. It's something I've seen in communities I've been a part of over the years over and over. I give it 6 months before the forums becomes an echo chamber for troons and politics instead of discussion about DF.

This was my feeling as well just seeing how he conducts himself on the Discord. A real winner.

He's been there for 13 years with 15,000 posts and hasn't made admin yet, but since DF is no longer a solo project and everyone involved are now rich, they can afford to hire moderators decide they don't care anymore and tell tranny jannies to mod it for free if they feel like it. But Toady's said he wants to keep wealth from affecting him and keep trucking along as always.

As far as I can tell, for the 16 years Dwarf Fortress has been going, Toady and his brother are the only mods. They actually do moderate but it seems very hands-off and mostly chill (which of course makes it an alt-right hellhole or something).

As for Mr. Rose, unfortunately he has contributed some value to Dwarf Fortress over the years. I don't know the depth of his contributions, whether they are mostly his own work or if he resumed where others left off, but it seems he made Armok Vision (full 3D fortress viewer, now long-abandoned and barely fucking works), Isoworld (isometric world viewer), Dorven Realms (converts world maps to Minecraft maps), and contributed to Stonesense (isometric fortress viewer). Here's Rose's dead Patreon account from when he couldn't get anyone to pay him to make map viewers.

But fortunately, Toady seems indifferent about others' utilities no matter how significant. I think he values the things he has built himself and his own process, though Kitfox is a crack in that worldview.

I've felt this way since z-levels were added. In the original game your fortress was this sprawling thing that really made you think about how to grow, or how to cope with previous bad decisions, until you inevitably delve too deep. Like it was self-contained in a way where you might play for days or weeks but you always had that scary wall in front (or to the right) of you.
With the extra dimension you can work around everything, turtle hardcore, build densely enough that you don't need to strategically position multiple halls and population/resource centres through your fort, and have all the space and time in the world; so it's basically just an ant farm once you know what to expect unless something stupid happens. It's not bad but it's a different game and I miss the tightness of the original experience.

All this to say it pretty much feels the same to me. I haven't played in a decade but unless I missed some real shit I don't see any backwards steps after dorfing all day today.

Interface differences wouldn't have bothered me though since I knew I'd have to relearn everything anyway. Mouse control does need some work but on the other hard, for the price of (a lot of) unnecessary clicking I was pretty much able to jump right in, so hopefully that's a big net gain for the new audience even if the edges ain't polished.

Fuck that, I wanna see em on an ideas guy cloud throwing wads of cash at people for a change.
 
I've played it for a few hours. In my opinion, it's a massive step back because the mouse based interface takes a million fucking years compared to the hotkey based original. I looked around on the reviews and forums, and it seems Oldfags are mad about missing features and bad UI design (literally half the game is disabled as of this writing, for example), while the Newfags just eat this shit up because "muh pwetty gwaphiks!"

There's a few things genuinely improved, but they're far-and-few between all the downgrades. If this version is what was necessary for some drool-brained retard to play this game, fine, but if you've already dived in the autism well of this game, you're probably better off just playing the original.

You can literally slice someone's guts open, grab them by their intestines and throw them across a room. The setting of the game is a world where the four races that exist are in a constant struggle to extirminate the other races.


Fucking hell. Getting so tired of the mod policing. Can't even modify the content you own without some tranny janny getting their panties in a twist over it.

Cut my teeth on dwarf fortress back when it first came out but just gonna stick with rim world for my dehumanizing crimes against humanity.
 
I got gifted a Steam copy. I like that zones are designated with z instead of i. Having to back out of the digging menu to cancel digging designations is annoying. The game not pausing on events like migrant waves, strange moods, etc. is fucking terrible. I had a dwarf claim a workshop and didn't even know it was happening until the game popped up a message saying they'd made an artifact quiver or something, I could have easily failed the mood. It did pause for that, at least. So much important stuff is relegated to easily missed little icons at the side of the screen, and fuck you if you dismiss a window and need to reference it again, you have to wait for the game to decide something is important enough to pop it up again. I can't figure out how to set up workshops to only allow dabbling skill to satisfy dwarves wanting to craft shit. Having to use the mouse for some things is annoying. I used to want more mouse support, now it feels inefficient.

I fucking love DF and I've been playing it for almost fifteen years. I feel like there are some improvements, some annoying quirks that got shifted around instead of eliminated, and massive oversights that negatively impact the experience. I focused more on that bad because holy shit you can't just pull up reports anymore lmao

Remember when "Don't like the mod? Don't download it," was common practice? I sure do. Now, we live in a world where idiots are frothing at the mouth over the idea that other people are enjoying a game in a way that doesn't affect them in anyway if they don't install it.

I think it was the Children and Pregnancy mod, the mod author was so ass blasted over people using "the fobidden mod that shall not be named" (rimjob world) that he set his up so if it detected rjw it would cause his to go into a forever loading sequence preventing you for initializing rimworld.

Just so goddamn tarded lately with dictating what you are and aren't allowed to do with your own game.
 
In another timeline I'd figure out how to code shit in classic DF and make a Kiwi Farms/lolcow culture themed mod. It would be funny and the idea of living rent free in Kitfox Games's head amuses me.

That's an easy thing to say before making the sort of money he's made working on the Steam release though. It'll be very easy for the success to go to his head - and judging from the troons he rubs elbows with, I imagine it won't be long before this really influences development on future patches.
 
Man, I knew it'd be too good to be true and things just go off without a hitch. I wanted to support these guys who made a game I was obsessed with back in the day and still revisit, but after hearing Josh mention the tranny shit on stream, and checking the thread and all the horrors of kitfox theres no way Im going to let those fuckers take any cash from me no matter how small. Beyond that, the steam version wasn't even very much fun. Maybe Ive just moved on from DF since I was waiting for the steam release to play it again, but I couldnt get into the way it looks now. Just feels like a lame indie game now with the tile art.

It's fixable. It shouldn't have been changed from the default, and fixing it should be exposed in an options menu somewhere, but it's fixable.

"Modding" a couple lines of text is still trivial, and every discussion I've seen has had the steps for taking out gays/blacks (but honestly who gives a shit, I don't pay that much attention to my little idiots). But modding everything else is easier, and if you're still too dumb there will be other mod download sites like there always have been with every game ever.

Interface issues are real but it's a game that's had regular updates since before some of the audience was born so cut em some slack for the initial release of a massive overhaul not being immaculate.

Yeah I don't love not being able to check back over the log because having em popping up in different categories all the time leads me to close them before I necessarily want to. There's a mod on steam workshop that adds alert sounds for messages, I haven't missed anything important since getting that so I recommend it.
Now my fort is pretty big and I've got stacks of everything I can ignore moods, so I kinda like that not pausing now, but it's something that'd be best configured in-game (like some sort of full message manager system to build on the new queue-like thing instead of being a sidegrade at best).

And yeah despite certain shit being clunkier there's a bunch of new QoL stuff I like, but I dunno if they're actually new-new so there's no point listing em.

It's more so that the things that are missing should be really, really obvious and it doesn't appear stuff has been playtested along with legitimate concerns about how the money is going to change the developers. (Anyone that says money won't change them is a liar, it is just how things are)

-Being unable to make upward staircases that aren't set into the wall when the above area isn't dug out yet.
-Lots of graphical issues at 2k resolution, and very bad graphical frames leaving the game difficult to play as it misses your inputs over and over.
-Sprites are filtered strangely instead of nearest-neighbor like every other pixel game in existence.
-Missing civilian alerts?
-Unable to mass-select materials like in classic, instead having to click hundreds of times.

The majority of these things would be caught if anyone just opened the game and tried to play for an hour or so.

Kitfox seems like the most grossly unprofessional and insane partner to pick. Dwarf fortress is a passion project, surely the brothers aren't that poisoned by politics that they'd place their life's work on the hand of some crazy trannies no?

Tarn is extremely autistic and doesn't know anything about pretty much anything to be frank. Kitfox was the first to reach out to the brothers regarding getting the game on Steam, so they just went with them. It's that simple. The brothers can keep working on their autism project and I'm not sure they care or can understand much else.
