Why am I not surprised it's a Homestuck?
Because degeneracy and Homestuck have always walked hand-in-hand. I remember at anime cons, those disgusting fucks would pass around a bucket to spit in, some faggot thing from the comic. I know at least one group got told to cut it out or get kicked out at one con, mostly because they were harassing the non-weebs with it.

Man, I didn’t realize how many of the shortcuts and hot keys were eliminated in the Steam version. Labors are pretty raw too.
 
I believe it's easier to provoke them into war now so just try the usual tricks, like murdering their diplomat, drowning their caravan and stealing their shit, making a treecutting agreement with them then cutting down every tree on the map, etc.
Use trees for wood? I think a bigger fuck you is to just burn down the map for no reason and only use the humble fungiwood for wood.

Mushrooms > elfish aboveground plants

I don't think that actually works to lower your diplomacy with them. They also don't seem to mind when you shoot them with wooden bolts (at least any more than the whole actually shooting them part).

So, since the release of the steam edition. Its better UI (LIKE WAY FUCKING BETTER.) And its more appealing to the eye graphics. I have been playing it religiously. But thats not what I came here to speak about. I have a couple predictions of what will happen to the game since its more likely that it will become mainstream.

1. Furry porn mods, just you wait.
2. A shitty dwarfs fortress discord server pops up and someone gets groomed.
3. Bread tubers and Red Haired journalist start complaining about how goblins are racist REEEE.
4. Alphabet soups figure out how to make it about them.
5. DSP becomes terminally addicted. Goes into a coma due to dwarf brain rot.
6. Keffals and Yaniv abandoned transgirldom and becomes transdwarfness's
7. Aussies ban it.
8. ???
9. Profit.
 
I got the game on Steam. I'm not surprised that the developers are a bunch of flaming faggots. I'm not going to spit on some decent effort, it seems they did a good job, but some things seem to either be missing, not working properly, or in need of polish.

I don't know why anyone would hang out in developer discords. I've been staying away from Discord myself and I'd say that's been a good life decision.

In this case, I'm not sure what's worst, the tranny mentally ill developers who want everything to happen in their discord to control the message, or the people stupid enough to be on the discord given the track record of the people who moderate it.

That said, let's talk about the fucking game. The Steam version is overly confusing to me due to the lack of hotkeys (why?), and even if I go and play the classic version, I haven't played this in a long ass time, and fiddling around dwarf therapist/lazynewbpack is not second nature. Either way, I'm pretty fucked. How do I get back on the cart here? I remember autistic hours long playlists explaining how to play the game. Is that something I should go back and refer to?

I don't get everyone's panic that DF will be dramatically changed because blue hairs says you cant call Elves TreeNiggers.

DF still has bugs that are critical and been around since 2006. Dwarfs still get stuck in trees, armor stands don't fucking work, military positions are bugged, dwarfs can demand impossible things like steel beds... Tarn wont fix that let alone touch core gameplay fundamentals over feelings.

Honestly any "woke" shit is by accident. Everyone fucking reees that there trans dorfs cuz male dwarfs can wear dresses. That's pretty much a bug or the fact that gender does not impact clothing chooses. Until recently, dwarfs could wear loincloths even though dwarfs cant make them so it would piss off dwarfs that their loincloths rot away and they cant get new ones.

If you suggest any feature to Tarn he will say "Yer that sounds cool, we should do that" but never does because he wants to work on magic and myths in the next big version.
I just hope the blue hairs will die off because the game is hard and we just get loud autists who will scream to get fucking annoying bugs finally fixed.
 
Is the gay shit with kitfox happening in the original df discord or just the kitfox one? Dont know personally since I havent been there in ages

I bought the game on Steam, heard the shit that was going on with the devs, refunded it and used the money to buy RimWorld instead.
 
Is there a way to make a functional moat in this game? In some of my earlier forts I tried a 1 square deep by 3 wide trench and connected it to the river, but then the goblins just swam across and clung to my walls. I've been hoping to try a deeper flowing moat but it's rare to find a spot with a river and an above ground drain so my design has gone untested. Has anyone else had better luck?

Also, just play the free version. You don't need your eyes that much, trust me.

Also you don't have to buy the game to support Bay12. You do that directly and cut Kitfox entirely out of the loop if they bug you enough:

I remember Kruggsmash's Crash Course video being pretty good just for setting up the bare basics of a fort. Personally, I'd recommend just playing with the wiki open and trying to use that as you run into things you may have no idea how to operate (like the military scheduling stuff). Watching tons and tons of videos before you get started removes some of the fun of getting things running on your own. Or having things go utterly pear-shaped, as is usual in DF.

Make sure you remove the ramps left behind by digging channels (the remove construction designation works on natural ramps) and you probably wanna make it at least a level or two deeper. And then since yeah shit can swim you probably want to add an overhang either by constructing floors over the edge on the fortress side or digging out the lowest level (or wherever the water level will be) to be a bit wider. Smoothing it helps too.
But unless the water is flowing or it's deep enough and impossible to climb out of you're basically adding a cushion so an empty moat can be better. Adding pressure with a waterfall or elevated pump (iirc) to wash losers away might be worth it though.

Better things to fill your moat with include molten rock, spikes, angry monsters. Then knock em down there with traps, or raise a wall on the far side and add a series of pressure plates and inward-facing drawbridges on the fortress side to act as pinball flippers, lol.

I think the main reason I'm digging the graphical version so much is that it's a hundred times easier than tilesets/ascii with building ridiculous elaborate stuff. I never bothered with any of this shit previously.

it's been fucking YEARS since I hears about this fucking game and I still have yet togetting around to trying it out jesus fuck though this recent shit I've been hearing has been going down according to people I know that play the thing killing my motivation to try.

If you want to download the original game grab the Lazy Newb Pack too with a few good tilesets and other useful utilities like DF hack and dwarf therapist included.

So the main thing is deeper moat? And I might try draining it into the caverns if there's nothing I want in there, maybe a 2x2 stairwell will give me current without pulling too much water out. I like the overhang idea btw, will that keep insectoid titans from scaling the wall?

Yeah, they can't climb up through the overhang.

One bad thing about moats is that they're magnets for dwarf children though. If you make a moat outside you need to make sure they can't climb trees to hop into it because those retards totally will.

Moats are okay but I wouldn't rely on them as a sole defense. I'd start with at least a drawbridge as a single entry (maybe with a separate entry for trade depot) and a trap tunnel or two again with drawbridges to block the main entrance while opening the trap tunnels.

Water's okay for drowning elves and the like (especially with a trade depot for your special friends) while keeping their stuff, but there's just too much stuff that can swim or fly or otherwise get over them, or doesn't have to breathe so just gets stuck down there forever.

Then there are things like if you get vampire blood in there and then some thirsty dorf decides it's a good water source. You also want some way of emptying and refilling them, and don't use floodgates, because building destroyers can wreck them, but they can't drawbridges. Considering a drawbridge does everything a floodgate does anyway, there's no reason at all to use them, unless maybe you get an artifact, because building destroyers can't destroy artifacts.

tl;dr moats are fun but all the useful stuff ends up underwater so they're a pain to maintain also they freeze if you're somewhere with winters.

Depending on your attitude about children, this could be a plus.

Yeah but if you want to actually get the goodies they left behind, you'll still have to drain them and send someone down.
