I don't even want it anymore. Most of the talent that Valve once had has bailed and the best the leftovers could do was a bullshit retcon called Half-Life: Alyx which ruined the series.
Exactly this, and this is the case for most games. I love how some people take offense and say I am being dramatic for saying gaming sucks and I no longer want to spend my money on it. Video games now are nothing but digital funco pops of once beloved franchises, and the only people left to play them are straight up cucks.

To be fair, the original half life devs were scared shitless of their insane and ravenous Steam fanbase with the popularity of the first half life and stated so many times during interviews. That is mainly why they were so hesitant to release anything half life related. They left that landmine to whoever came next. As was planned to make Alyx the main protagonist anyway.

Its also why Half life 2 had a 6 year development cycle and the leak of it was drastically different from the final with the crossbow and magnum being seemingly an afterthought added in some time during the subsequent rush to get the game out the door a year later. Game development normal cutting room floor and actual professional standards compared to recent times aside.

I'm pretty over it as well, I mean it's been almost 14 fucking years since Episode 2, there comes a time in which it becomes almost impossible to even realistically imagine what a Half-Life 3 would even look like or be like after all this time.

The decline of Valve really is one of the biggest smoking guns that gaming just ain't as good as it used to be, that it's not a matter of opinion or rose colored glasses, it's just a fact.

choosing to stick to PC in a year like this especially if you're investing in building one is a hard time right now. not in a provocative way to pc gamers of course the struggle is tough

I got lucky and built mine December 2019. Even then, though, I don't feel like I'd be missing much if I hadn't as I mostly use it as my retro emulation machine. I'm looking forward to Far Cry 6 but I'm a weirdo that likes Far Cry games and I'm still expecting to be disappointed for petty reasons.

I've seen a LOT of people online that will argue tooth and nail that gaming is the best it's ever been, and they all end up being leftist troons or faggots. They'll always mention graphics and stories but never seem to notice the decline in gameplay and the rise in bullshit practices.

ughhhh i feel cucked for waiting until the market chills out. late 2020-2021 was probably gonna be the time i wanted to get a 2070 at the very least. but glad my rx 480's somehow still surviving certain games. you best cherish it because i went through xbox and pc gamer e3 being like "yeah im probably not going to be able to play 65% of those games displayed"

They love todays homogenized game design because it means they dont have to learn anything new when they get a new game.
These people are absolutely horrified when a game plays and controls in a unique way and consider it a major negative and bad design

In addition, their other games that they made, Artifact and Underlords, trying to use the DOTA 2 license to cash in on gaming trends (card games and auto-battlers), didn't have much lasting power. Artifact is one major example of what not to do when it comes to game design, because of how badly it fell off after release, and Valve gave up on the game for good too.

less design more business model, they wanted to recreate the paper version (which even doesn't work in the analog sphere anymore, but still could've been cheaper/less time consuming for everyone in the long run considering the average digital business model) with b2p and then trading instead of having people grind constantly with f2p random drops - but that's apparently what people wanted "because hearthstone is free too!111". when it came out no one was talking about the game, only the price.

quality in design is a moot point considering the shit that makes billions these days because people are retarded.

I remember a well known tripfag on /v/ in 2005-08 that I spoke to actually contacted the dude back then with a few others. Chad never owned a Playstation but an Xbox, didn't care much for videogames either, but he knew gamers were somewhat losers and would take anything seriously and like clockwork his Chad character became a household name a few days after that video came out.

They're shills. Gaming forums are over-loaded with paid company shills and, although it's a recent thing, industry shills.

The gaming industry has never earned so much money, for doing less than it ever has, by convincing so many people that it's the best evah. Unfortunately, those born in 2000 and who picked up a pad in 2008, have missed the transition and excellence that previous gens brought. And they won't look back in fondness like we do, for the reasons you mention; shiny graphics and over-the-top Michael Bay-esque stories are all the nu-gamers need to consooom

They say that for every year. It's marketing 101 jargon. I remember Todd Howard used that as a talking point at an E3 once when speaking about Skyrim that they were in a 'golden age of gaming' (a golden age should always be used in past tense, not present). It means nothing outside of pleasing investors and blind consumers

Honestly this E3 was a bust. I usually just watch it for the "so bad its good" moments but now it even lacks that now. Nintendo won solely because of new Metroid game, because they had something to actually offer that was a surprise to people.

Costs them practically nothing. Even in early 2000's, forums like G4 had people talking on behalf of the companies they were fanboys for. Usually had blogs linked to their forum post speaking in high praise about Nintendo, MS, or Sony and were not shy to admit it. Anyone who says "why would go to a place like x?" and its not like they have to offer much outside of maybe free merch and a copy of a game that they're speaking highly of.

I got lucky and last upgraded in 2019 as well.

But again, all you have to do is point at Valve, one of the absolute best western devs of all time... and then they fucked off from making video games more or less (save for Alyx most recently)

In fact it's now been a decade since their last real, non-VR game, if that's not a sign of obvious decline I don't know what is.

most "influencers" with hundreds of thousands and millions of views are also paid company shills as well with the majority of views and subs being bots and fake accounts.

Then when companies try something new the shills reee in a cacophony of weaponized autism with the blind leading the blind with youtubers/twitch streamers acting as some form of "higher authority" even if the game is good these days. Like Chris from Halo follower (A major lolcow). Who just revel on sensationalist reporting vs actually showing what the fuck they are talking about on screen instead of trying to show themselves off as if they aren't some random asshole in a gaming chair spamming clickbait all over the search engines to fuck up everything.

When I read Epistle 3 from Marc Laidlaw, I would've been content completely had Valve just released Episode 3 in 2009-2010 with that story. It was pretty much in tone and in line with what Half-Life 2 was. That's what they should have done. That would've allowed Half Life 3 to be placed at any given time, anywhere, much like Half-Life 2 was. Instead they dug a hole for themselves and Alyx was pretty much the golden reset button to partially unfuck their situation. And we all know the only reason Alyx was made is because Valve needed some type of game to get people to buy VR headsets
