Elliot didn't do it for the sole purpose of being discussed, he genuinely thought it would make a statement, but unfortunately the only people who took it that way are almost as big of faggots as he was and are laughed at accordingly.

If I remember correctly, Elliot treated winning the lottery or getting a decent job the same as getting a girlfriend, something that would fall into his lap by chance. He even threw a giant shitfit over not winning anything from the lottery. If he wasn't so deluded into thinking that the universe would bend over backwards for him, he would've realized that his chances of winning the lottery are one in 175 million. Better yet, he would've realized that getting a decent job or getting into a relationship takes time and effort.

Perhaps my favorite part of his little whiny memoir is when he complained about not getting the first slice of his birthday cake - years after it happened. Most people would have laughed it off or forgotten about it.
