I've been through atleast 10 layoffs organized by consulting companies. They all come through to improve efficiency and cut costs. They cut a bunch of jobs, roll out the PowerPoints saying we saved X amount of dollars. C-suite reports it to the street and the investors are pleased.

Meanwhile the consultants had no idea how anything works and eventually over time you see the jobs that were cut come back because they were actually needed.

This feels like what DOGE/Elon is doing. Cut the jobs, get the exciting numbers, but then after that the orgs will morph back into what they were before. You'll only hear about the former though.

Just wanted to highlight this because I think it's pretty relevant.

I can sympathize with the posts talking about being frustrated with the status quo or whatever, and maybe this is an overly cynical take, but I feel like things are still going to end up being fairly status quo. Musk isn't really looking to fix anything, he's just grabbing at "gotchas" to win the culture war and farm upvotes. Like, he's identifying things he things are wrong, but I haven't heard much about how they're going to fix things. Just firing a bunch of people isn't a solution, especially if those same people end up quietly getting hired back when they realize cutting them in the first place was a mistake.

Musk just isn't the dude for the job. I know it feels like it's impossible at this point to fix the government, but it wasn't that long ago all things considered where we had a surplus, and a big part of that was focusing on actual government efficiency and reform and the two parties begrudgingly working together on the budget.

Musk is too focused on being the hero. It's exactly like when those kids were trapped in a cave and Musk inserted himself into everything because he wanted to be the one to rescue them, and he got all pissy and accused one of the divers on the actual rescue team of being a pedo when Musk couldn't just rich a solution into exist after a few days. Trying to imply that the US Federal Government is fiscally responsible after literal decades (going back multiple administrations, both R and D) of people seeing and knowing about how bloated, fucked and mismanaged it is just because some lolcow talked out of his ass in that position is deranged.

As you know well from the Thunderdome, I am generally well-disposed to Trump, but no I do not think that DOGE will do good things. You can tell exactly what the angle is for DOGE with how it was made into an entity in the first place. It is a rebranding of the Digital Service and the "fixers" that are being sent into the departments are using AI programs to identify this fraud, waste, and abuse. The plan is to cut the staff, and then use these programs to fill in the gaps. Programs that are, conveniently, going to be proprietary consultancy-style programs owned by XCorp or Palantir or OpenAI. I don't believe that they are being objective in their cutting, and I think that others are correct in that what will happen is that these AI programs, as all AI programs are, will prove to not be up to snuff and the departments will form back into the bureaucracy. Let me put it another way: the USAID fraud and all of the shit that came out of that did not need Elon or DOGE to be uncovered. He didn't do anything. The zoomer staffers didn't either. All of this shit was, basically, out in the open (as far as receipts in the Government go.) Trump could've found this shit first time around. I think all of this "le...AI computer" shit is retarded, and a total mask for open fraud and grift. None of that shit is real. None of that shit can replace actual people running programs and departments. They just can't. You want the Government to be even more of a robot-customer-support than it already is? I don't.

What is concerning is that we have an unelected figurehead of one (rather, many) of those corporations in a government position where he can directly fuck with people that he or his handler may not like, just because. Removing such a program without replacing it is the neutral option, as opposed to redirecting funds for those purposes to outlets aligned with one's own party. So, the cuts he has been making or attempting up to this point I find acceptable, even without expectation that the money is going straight back into my pocket, or even anywhere near it. I have no problem with anyone arguing against that, and I appreciate it because I can foresee a time when I WON'T be fine with something he's doing; right now I'm also wary of those who have vested interests in the status quo deploying arguments against those changes on the basis of an ad hominem on the person entrusted with overseeing them, or based on principles which they do not actually hold.

I'm no lawyer, nor am I very experienced with the ins and outs of federal bureaucracy, so what do you think would happen then? Do you think Musk would sue to remain with DOGE? Perhaps a federal judge would issue an injunction to prevent the president from removing him or dissolving DOGE?

I'd like to bring up another argument, that being basic human intuition. The average human lives no longer than a hundred years. It's incredibly rare for a person to live a decade after 100. let alone two or three decades. That's why the chart Elon posted was such a red flag.

This is about a database that interacts with a bunch of other databases and relies on data being correctly entered and automatically propagated through the system.
If nobody ever enters a death date for someone, it won't be there, and it sounds like the software wasn't designed to have a straightforward way to enter a fake death date or automatically disable numbers assigned to people who aren't listed as dead anywhere (I can think of reasons why).
I think it's plausible that remaking the whole thing can be more expensive and risky than just accepting the current amount of waste.

The DOGE MO is to get access to some agency, claim there is fraud without evidence, lie about specific examples, ignore being told that they're lies, and gut or shut down things citing the lies as justification.
