Epic Games General Thread - Its time to talk about what the AAA gaming industry does not understand about the PC console.

I just hope one day either through shitty security and/or disgruntled employee we found out just how much Tim Sweeney has been playing for all the Epic Games exclusives.

So that Tetris PC exclusive is out. Funny thing...it needs Steam VR to be played in VR. Lol.

Some players are encountering complications with getting the VR working. It turns out that Epic Games Store doesn’t have support for the necessary tools to run VR games. The game requires Steam to launch into VR mode with the HTC Vive, even though it is exclusive to Epic. It does use OpenVR for many other headsets.

The Epic Games Store also doesn’t have the same controller support as Steam. On Valve’s service, you can modify your input on a platform level. Epic doesn’t have anything like that, so you have to rely on developers to offer support. This is especially frustrating because Tetris Effect does not support DualShock 4 on PC, yet.

Not only do you have to use SteamVR (or OpenVR) for Tetris Effect, but it's looking like that will be the case for any VR Titles that EGS signs (unless "express VR support" was added to the Trello).

More criminal than that, though, is you can't use a PS4 controller to play a port of a PS4 game (but you could if it was on Steam).

Epic's Trello page has now pushed its roadmap further back by a month (again, for the 7th time) and that includes any and all updates that were meant to be released back in June, meaning that all June updates are to be scheduled for August, and any subsequent ones in September and beyond.

That shopping cart that was supposed to come in six months back in February? Yeah, there's still a six-month wait for it. Literally nothing's changed in the past two months, and the store has actively hurt itself because of it.

And for those wondering why I'm linking to a Reddit conversation and not the Trello/archiving the Trello, it's because you legitimately cannot archive the page anymore (dunno if I'm late on this or not, but every other time I've been able to archive it fine, now all of a sudden, all previous links/currently made ones are broken). Any time you try to archive it, the page just comes out completely blank, and that goes for any and all other roadmaps on Trello's site. Not exactly Epic's fault, but it still makes you wonder why, instead of relying on a site that's shadily trying to keep its users from never properly saving information, they don't just put it up on their own website and showcase their roadmap there like every other company.

I thought all publicity was good publicity, Mr. Sweeny? Surely you'd want to keep your customers informed unlike that big mean ol' Mr. Steamworks even though they just announced their library update but ignore that. What happened to creating an open and honest market, Tim?

(B-B-But don't worry, a 12% cut is totally sustainable you guys!!!)

That's fucking hysterical. This store is such a shithole and is obviously only surviving on exclusives.

You're buying games from a store that can't even implement a shopping cart for a year, has to rely on Steam for nearly all support, has to rely on Steam for VR capabilities, cannot to be played offline, has no family share, has no streaming capabilities, cannot use codes of older games to get them on the store, has barely any third party store support, is going to now be competing with a Steam library and curation update which is where most Steam complaints come from and (gasp) actually give feedback to Steam developers. Which is shocking in and of itself at how Valve has been hands-off and basically mute on everything. You still pay full price for games, despite Sweeny's head up his ass comments about games being cheaper. All money seems to be going right into publisher pockets and indie games haven't offered anything new despite the massive price cut. So all his promises turned out to be bullshit.

It also has to compete with GoG Galaxy 2.0, which gives players access to all their games across all platforms and eventually consoles, GoG with DRM free games and a more feature complete store.

So......why am I using this piece of shit again? Oh yeah, there's no fucking reason to do so.

Remind me again, why did they shell out money for a VR game when they don't have VR support and have to actually outsource it?

Tim dude, what the fuck? Stop buying exclusives and give that poor dev team the money so they can actually fix the store. It shouldn't take this long to put in a fucking shopping cart

To be fair, SteamVR/OpenVR is technically open source - which is a handy thing to have for Valve to sell VR headsets, just so you can use it on other platforms if you so choose. It isn't crazy to think that the folks over at Epic would leverage that or that Steam would encourage it.

That said, not having PS4 controller support is fucking bananas when you're porting over PS4 games - I don't think anyone in VR uses a keyboard and mouse (it's either a standard controller or a VR controller).

I've got a theory on that. My theory is that they're running out of parties to take their exclusive money. I remember when we had this huge stream of Epic exclusives every month. Its been slowly trickling downward and every exclusive seems to have massive problems, either bug wise or store wise and I wouldn't be surprised if more people are asking for more upfront. Shenmue III turned out to be a major disaster and Epic's laughable attempts to blame Steam basically failed unless you were already an Epic shill or fanboy. That had to give a lot of publishers and developers second thoughts. I mean, shit got nasty.

The only reason I've heard people using Epic is because of the free games, which Epic has to pay for out of pocket. That's really it. I have heard that more occasionally one or two people using Epic for the rare exclusive they wanted and that was mostly Shenmue. So people are basically going over there, getting their free games and leaving. Their Fortnite audience isn't converting, that's for sure. Most of them are just playing and spending money on that.

Other people have actively rebelled at exclusives, pirating games and basically having long memories of which went over. So, as much as they hate Steam and want to fuck it over, they're running out of targets. I figure that's why Tetris VR was bought. The problem is, it exposes people to Steam's VR devices as well as their VR library, of which Epic cannot support. So again, this purchase reeks more of desperation than anything else. They loathe Steam with a passion, and exposing their customers to Steam's VR experience is mind boggling and a joke. "Hey this VR works great, I should buy more Steam VR games". There's no other explanation other than desperation.

My feeling is that most of the budget is tied up in exclusives with a very minimal development budget. The problem with Epic and its cut is that it has less money to invest in its platform. It cannot do what Steam does with its paltry take. It can't offer unlimited keys, support third party re-sellers, develop hardware integration, remote streaming and the like. Its so bound by the 12%.

When it first came out, I figured that 12% cut would lower game prices, hence more game sales, hence competition. This did not happen. Epic simply does not have the resources

Steam would allow it because it exposes you to the bigger Steam library of VR games. Epic is doing it because its obviously desperate. It loathes Steam. No way this would have been done otherwise.

So far the only real problem I'm facing is that it's not discovering the install status of Steam games that aren't on the C:// drive. Epic/Uplay work fine tho.
It tried updating a custom patched GOG game I had previously marked to not update automatically when I went into that game's individual settings to see if it stayed on "don't update" (it did). I stopped it in time. No problems with Steam, but I only have one Steam folder (on D).

My primary (and only) steam folder is on D as well, which makes it weird that it didn't read them. Looking at the bug report tracker, it seems like I'm not the only one who found this issue either.

One good thing I'm looking forward to seeing is how they implment this feature (currently locked):

So heres a funny joke for ya an stop me if you heard this one. Now everyone remembers how the creator of PUBG tried to sue Epic for Fornite an how that tanked, well guess who recently changed their tune an now saying how Epic is their best buddy an partnering with em is really awesome.

Good job Tim, giving piracy that burst of life

The best part about all of this is that piracy is always, ALWAYS, that counterargument's smoking gun. Because there is no way to argue against Tim Sweeney paying for copies. The man himself couldn't shut up about that fact back when Epic Games was at peak infamy earlier this year.

The only times this doesn't work is when you're in a community where discussion of piracy is disallowed, but even then you have a shitton of other arguments at your disposal. Just none as incriminating as mates and lassies hollerin' a briny jig atop the treasure trove of games copies donated graciously by yer resident salty landlubber, Timothy Sween the Wicked.
