There is a huge difference between love of a pet or family member and romantic love. Even then I doubt his feeling real love for something/someone other than himself. More like affection.

Most everyone thinks about the first person they were with at some point but most of the time it's because it was a mutual relationship and you were dating and enjoying fuzzy-wuzzies with each other.
