I just don't understand for what good reason would Microsoft try to buy Obsidian. Over the last couple of years they've only made CRPGs. Their best received titles are all games based on licensed properties (KOTOR2, New Vegas, South Park) and their current output of (from what I hear mostly mediocre) CRPGs barely sell. Obsidian is not gonna sell any Xboxes or Windows 10 licenses.
It's like when they bought Rare, a company known for doing their own thing and making dozens of family-friendly games on family-friendly platforms where those titles are guaranteed to sell well, only to shift their titles to the hardcore platform and micro-manage everything they do and make. It's so baffling.
The truth of the matter is that has never, and still does not, understood how to market and make games. They’re laughably bad at it. They constantly scoop up new studios and micro-manage them into hell. They turned one of the most prodigal studios of an era into a shovelware factory ffs.
There’s a reason XBox tried super duper hard to be an “entertainment center” over a console: Microsoft knows that they cannot capture the type of audience Nintendo and Sony has. People love Mario for Mario and Crash for Crash; people don’t love Halo for Master Chief, they love it for the shooting. Shooting that they can get in other games without getting an XBox. When Microsoft sees a popular free agent who’s a little down on their luck, all they see is a potential cash cow to manipulate into making their next big face, not a group to work with on making a profit.
