Fallout series

No, they were all "it's realistic for the Courier to faff around but not the Sole Survivor!"

Realistic my ass. As if Fallout is anywhere close to realistic.
Whine some more, that will assuredly change the fact that you are an autistic retard who equates a threatening letter to letting your baby get dissected.
The main reason I dislike Lonesome Road
No, Bear and Bull Man, I do not know what the fuck you are talking about and don't want to.

Yes. In the post apocalypse people really care about LEGALLY BINDING LETTER.

Very important. Massive source of motivation. I played new Vegas for 100 hours and dont remember the threat at all. But still Massive motivation for my character. Not at all motivated more chasing Benny for revenge than contents of the package.

My cuckslave job was way more important. I have a duty to my manager. I speak for all people who play the game.

I never felt like it was too bad there. I mean the only absolute concrete fact that goes on there is one day the Courier delivered a package to a place. Which, given he's a Courier, makes sense. Whether your character remembers even delivering the package or caring about the destruction it caused is your choice to make.

Valid, i just don't like how they don't give us a chance to make it a case of mistaken identity though I admit the dlc does have my favorite armor in the game

This chase for the "perfect" roleplaying game where your character at the start is such a blank slate that you can imagine any past is such a waste of time. You might as well wait for the day when pigs fucking fly. Especially for the Fallout franchise, which, outside of New Vegas where you were just some mailman shmuck, EVERY FUCKING GAME, INCLUDING THE INTERPLAY TITLES, HAVE FORCED A BACKSTORY DOWN UPON YOU. In the first game, you are a Vault Dweller. In the second game, you're the chosen one of some dipshit tribe. In Tactics and BoS, you're with the Brotherhood of Steel. And shit, even New Vegas couldn't resist shoving a backstory down on the Courier too, if Lonesome Road was any indication. Your character will always have a backstory with a goal, a goal that they wind up ignoring because the player wants to fuck around and explore for 60+ hours in the game world and be really unrealistic about it when compared to the player character's story.

But, since I'm a glutton for punishment, here's my two cents on what a "perfect roleplaying character" for a Fallout game would be.

SOME. DIPSHIT. IN. A BAR.

No, really, some random asshole who shows up one day in a bar, who takes a drink from the local bartender. The game is set on a border town north of the NCR, where they're up against something else, and your character comes into a bar, and the bartender offers you a drink. Until you make a name for yourself later on, and pick a title down the line, your character in the beginning will be called the "Thirsty Stranger," which is what the bartender calls you. A nod to both KOTOR and Fallout's own Mysterious Stranger.

After you set in your skill points, your character's sex, and your looks, the bartender then starts asking you questions on who you are and where you're from. Sure, it's something similar to KOTOR 2's way of establishing backstory, but hey, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

And sure, there will be some pre-programmed answers, but you can choose to forgo all of them and go with "it's none of your business."

The pre-programmed answers, if you choose them, will give you bonuses as well as an automatic plus or minus for your reputation with the local factions.

If you choose to be from the NCR, like say, former NCR Ranger, you will get some bonuses for guns and survival skills, and the NCR characters will automatically take a liking to you, and if you visit a Ranger outpost with a high-enough persuade skill, you can convince them to even hand over a set of NCR Veteran Ranger armor and a high-caliber rifle of your choice. But this means that anyone who opposes the NCR automatically despises you, be they former Enclave remnants, Brotherhood refugees, Legion sympathizers, or local gangs who hate the NCR. Some might even attack you for being the NCR's patsy.

You can choose to be from the Legion, and that automatically gives you a plus to your survival skills, constitution, guns, explosives, and melee skills. But that means that every SoB from the NCR automatically hates your guts, and some might even hate you enough to try and kill you. But Legion spies and sympathizers will leave behind gifts for you; and a Frumentarii even lets you in on a Legion cell in the map preparing for a major strike against the NCR. And since the Legion enslaved women on sight, women will be naturally predisposed to hate your guts right off the bat. Especially for a female Legion character; the average woman will act like you're a gender traitor and a sellout.

You can choose to be from the Brotherhood or the Enclave, and again, that makes the NCR people salty towards you, but it gives you a boost to your tech skills, as well as the ability to wear power armor right off the bat instead of paying someone to teach you. There will also be crates of Enclave tech or Brotherhood tech strewn around the map, left behind by sympathizers of the Brotherhood or the Enclave. An Enclave crate will recognize an Enclave-background player and automatically open up. Ditto for Brotherhood crates and players. And these crates can contain anything from a full suit of power armor, a powerful energy weapon, or ammo for energy weapons. Other players will have to use tech and lockpicking skills to open up said crates, but not players with the right backgrounds. And yes, there are isolated pockets of Enclave and Brotherhood supporters, some of whom will be more positively predisposed to you if you were a part of their faction in the past.

A player with a background from the Followers has an automatic plus to intelligence, science, and medicine, a person from the Vault will have increased technical skills but scammers will try to make a fool of them, thinking they're naive since they came fresh from the vault.

And of course, you can choose to eschew all of these, tell the bartender that your past is none of their business, and build your own character from the ground-up when it comes to their past.

Its hard to beat dusters for looks, especially since the duster dusters you get from finishing it and the Elite Riot Gear are stats-wise some of the best armor in the game. 13 DT and 3 weight for a piece of cloth? 22 DT and a massive +5 crit chance boost for 23 weight?

The problem with that is best choice is no choice sense thats the path that lets you do the most content.
You still get as much content if you choose to have no past, it's just that you have to work harder to get the bonuses that those with actual backgrounds start off, like good rep, power armor training, or skill boosts.

Normally I'd agree, but the dusters in NV look really weird to me. They follow a straight line down to the hips then jut out at a 45° angle. Add to that the default stance is to stand with their arms rigidly at their sides it's just odd-looking.

It's probably due to animation constraints, given how it would either be at an angle to minimize clipping or stretching like crazy otherwise. The fabric technology might have been too expensive to use for game engine back then but fast forward 5-10 years later in game dev, a lot of games flex with various fabric physics (flags, capes etc.) to show off.

I think it's because the game was famously rushed and Obsidian thought 'Hardly anyone uses 3rd person anyway, no-one'll care'

Ironically enough, Obsidian's best titles were made with them being rushed.

KOTOR 2 and New Vegas? Pearls of the Western RPG industry.

Alpha Protocol and Outer Worlds? Forgettable mediocre trash.

Obsidian made KOTOR 2 and New Vegas on a strict timetable, but were given all the cash and time extensions they asked for when making Alpha Protocol and Outer Worlds.

I suppose if you want the best out of Obsidian, you need to give them a short timetable and constant pressure to get things done fast.

Haven't played Fallout 4 in a while, but doesn't that game have that sort of thing for some clothing (I know some hairstyles do)?

In the remote chance New Vegas gets remade with 4's version of Creation, maybe dusters can finally be able to sway a bit.

Screw dusters. I want to see Legion Vexillariuses (Vexillarii) with waving banners. I also want some crotch banners and various knightly shit on the BoS.
