I've always hated how the legion is always glossed over as "evil fascist faction" and no one ever stops and thinks WHY people drift towards the legion in the post apocalypse, it could be a interesting discussion as to why people, in times of great hardship and suffering, flock to more extreme ideologies and give up their rights for safety.

I agree with you, but it really isn't "always", there are plenty (but not enough) people who continue thinking after a knee-jerk emotional response
If you come across people glossing them over like that, just avoid them and don't waste your time with them

I always assumed that it was because they felt there would be a sense of safety even if they had to give up their freedoms to have it.

So far the most fun and entertaining way I've played this game was using a mod to make gauss rifles and the YCS/186 only consume 1 microfusion cell per shot and then main either of the two

That sounds very boring and not that funny.

Like besides an alcoholic Kenshiro in a top hat one of my favorite builds was loading an AMR with explosive rounds and watching people ragdoll around.
