The shooting mechanics are so bad especially the inability to shoulder your weapon and aim down the sights.

I always lump those together and I didn't want to sound like I was on the nv dicksuck train but yeah obviously I want as much qol as is possible. I forgot how different they are as I never replayed 3, and thats probibly why.

Environment wise Fallout 3 is hands down my favorite. I love the dark and gloomy atmosphere, especially the DLC of Point Lookout.

But even before Fallout 4 came out I found Fallout 3 virtually unplayable after playing New Vegas.

It's even more fun when you mod the shit out of it. Use an organizer, obviously.

It's almost like 80 years of stable governance can do a lot when you have the industrial bones of (in Fallout at least) the single most industrialized nation on Earth to build on and with. Clean water, a lack of banditry, and a stable food supply from organized agriculture will do a ton to get pop numbers up and ensure accumulated generational knowledge like how to make and fix stuff gets passed down intact. Shit, just look at how Africa's growing despite lacking all of that.

You ever just have those ideas for characters you just have to share? Like a big game hunter who is a complete asshole and destabilizes the entire Mojave in order to turn the entire region into his own personal game reserve where he can hunt and kill whatever and whoever he pleases he'll even launch the nukes in lonesome road to isolate the mojave into his own personal fiefdom

I kind of like the original two fallout games. Their weapon and ammo sprites are really good for Doom mods.

I followed the advice of users on here and New Vegas is starting to click with me. Money's no longer an issue since I realized I was hoarding expensive shit I'm never gonna use, I'm not getting as slaughtered as I was earlier, and I found a companion (Boone, who is real useful). My only complaint is that a few of these missions have way too much backtracking. I just finished the Helios quest for example; right at the very end I couldn't turn on the console because I had done the mission at night. As far as I can tell, the only way to make the time pass is to sleep in a bed, so I fast traveled back to the motel, slept, then fast traveled back but had to go through the entire area again just to push a button. Part of it was my fault, in hindsight I should have realized that you can only collect solar power in daylight, but at the same time it's a lot of time wasted for one simple action.

I am having a lot more fun than I was previously though.

Press T and it will let you wait, which works the same way as sleeping but without the bed.

Pretty sure it's been the same key since Daggerfall.
Nah, T is transportation in that one (or maybe it is Wait, I dunno I switch the keys around). What screwed with me was that in Fallouts 1 and 2, you could rest/wait anywhere but you did it from the Pipboy menu, so because I didn't see it in the Pipboy in NV I assumed it wasn't an option at all.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it a bit more! Get ready for Vegas though, it can get a bit glitchy there.

Go into control mapping and look at the controls. It might show you a thing or two you've missed here or there. Also, remember that the 2 hotkey is reserved for hot-swapping ammo. Most useful with shotguns and the 5mm/5.56 rifles to switch over to something with more penetration when encountering someone in metal armor or similar, then switching back for normal enemies.

Since you've got the Sturdy Caravan Shotgun from the ultimate edition, crafting some magnum ammo for tougher opponents will serve you well. The SCS's higher durability will help with the only real downside of magnum ammo, the increased wear. Also, I can't remember if you took repair as a main skill, but if you did, save some of the really low-level, cheap to repair stuff like the 9mm pistol and the varmint rifle. There's a perk for repair-focused characters that makes those find new use later on, and it's both practical and profitable.

Gonna agree on the atmosphere of the game being one of the best. I still remember wandering the wastes listening to Enclave Radio. It hit me right in the feels when I finally got into DC and stood there looking at the dead capitol of our bygone nation while America the Beautiful played over my Pipboy. If it had been real life instead of a game I might have legit started crying.

Is melee/unarmed any fun in new vegas?
Better than 3, especially unarmed. Different melee weapons have unique moves that can be done with a requisite skill level in VATS or with the correct power attack outside of it, no skill requirement. The knife spear from Dead Money in particular has a really satisfying "mauler" attack that basically auto-cripples limbs. Unarmed has the greatest weapon variety its had in any fallout game, and you can learn special unarmed moves from various sources.

I will never get tired of uppercutting someone's head off with the ballistic fist or melting deathclaws with the industrial hand.

Ballistic fist can carry you through the game against just about everything but the really big deathclaw variants

Based on gameplay I've seen with the proper perks and build it almost seems to break the game in half albeit some of it involves pore engagement with the crafting system then I'd like for chems and stuff. Honestly that's another question is the general crafting system worth engaging with I don't think I've ever bothered with ammo crafting or survival crafting ever

Decent survival skill, jet, and purified water. One of the only crafting recipes you'll ever need. Rushing water is fucking broken.
