To my knowledge this was even the case with autistics and its absence was only noted in severely damage humans and those who had abusive upbringings

The Westermarck Effect. It's only a theory and a controversial at that, however the "critical period" theorised for it to kick in is 6 or 7. Given Barb used to decant Chris onto babysitters so she could go out drinking (plus Chris's autism and presumably other issues interfering with his ability to feel empathy) that might explain it. Pop psy reckons that Freud being raised by nannies instead of his mother is what lead to him feeling sexual attraction to his mother (because he missed out on the period for reverse sexual imprinting) and thus including the Oedipus complex in his theory of psychosexual development.

On a side note, we know Chris is very bad with dealing with death. Maybe part of the reason he took his father's passing so bad was because he suddenly was afraid he would act on this impulse?

I don't think there is much evidence that Bob and Barb were particularly absentee early in Chris' life. There are stories about babysitting, but not constant babysitting.

Is it really unacceptable to hire a baby sitter to look after your kid every once in a while and have a night out?

I am sure that Barb fucked up Chris in all kinds of ways, but I don't think that was one of them.

Chris promoting incest and then admitting he's dreamt of his own mother in a sexual way is indeed sick. He needs professional help before he decides to act out his feelings on his elderly mother. If he does act out those dreams on his mother then he can be charged with elder abuse.

We kiwis can take comfort in knowing that Chris's autism is the reason he has a small duck. It would prevent him from having children. Which would save any female children he wanted from being a victim of his twisted beliefs.
