That's most things in general; acceptance/normalization brings larger crowds and with it money, in return for watering shit down to a hollow husk of what it once was. While I'm not going to call the girls a bunch of vapid whores; I've been to enough conventions of various types to know what goes in the hotel rooms. Consensual, coerced, or otherwise, a lot of shady shit goes down with a bunch of reckless teens/early-twenties; especially when the alcohol comes out and people want to "be cool." And to me, the main problem is people get star-struck (for lack of a better term) and then shit goes down in hotel rooms or other places; but because the central reasoning for everyone to be there is the event, the event and its community gets slammed. Then there's a need for an ever expanding list of rules because less than 1% of the population did something stupid.
Fuck, last year there was a batch of drinks that got roofied at the EVO after party, a party you didn't need a badge to get into. But you know how it went; the FGC/Gaming culture has a fucking predator problem that needs to be corrected. Whether the perp (who was never found) was part of the FGC or not is irrelevant; people do bad things, and use whatever cover they can to hide themselves... but that doesn't make a good rallying cry or need for a 30-person strong diverse team to root out sexism in whatever industry.
