Others have commented up thread, but the costs are just retarded. They literally could have been closer to their target bandwidth/costs, if they had only *just delivered one stream per user* in the default experience, instead of all 10. Literally would have (almost) cut their costs down an order of magnitude. 3 grand a day is a lot easier to stomach than 30k.

(OK yeah people were coming up with clever ways to show all streams in various apps, and that probably would have continuted, but I promise the bulk were watching on the website, while it worked.)

They clearly didn't bring in proper tech people. There are camwhore sites doing basically this set up, with 1000 streams running all day, every day. Yeah, the audience per stream is typically lower, but I bet overall eyeballs is still higher than what they were doing. And that's assuming they couldn't have done a deal with a Rumble or Odysee.

It's all just incompetent.

There's no fucking way it costs $10k a day to host a livestream. Either we're all getting fucked with, or the host is blatantly stealing whatever they want from his bank account.

You're underestimating how crazy fucking expensive this kind of hosting is, Sam is basically streaming 4k high bitrate to tens of thousands of people using his own makeshift service most likely with dogshit optimization.

Except it is. Cloudfront charges $0.085/GB. Even with just 5k people, watching 10 simultaneous feeds, it adds up even on low quality streams.


If we assume as little as 36KB/s * 50k, we get 1.8GB/s
At $0.085 per GB this equals to
$0.153 per second
$9.18 per minute
$550.8 per hour
$13,219.2 per day
$92,534.4 per week

The claim is that it costs $10K a day if you build your site like a fucking retard. Not only do I find that easy to believe, I would have found it difficult to believe the reverse, that Hyde & Co. would create a custom site to stream to tens of thousands of people and not somehow fuck it up.
