Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

I think they removed every single use of the words cute or beautiful too, I can already imagine how ugly they must be

Wait, literally any mention of gender? So if they're talking about a girl they'll always use gender neutral "they" instead of "she", or something? What about gendered terms, like princess? How far are they actually taking that?

Nintendo is really slipping lately. What a disgrace.
Any third party mentioning of gender that isn't strictly "he said," or "she said", or "look at her", and any dialogue that remotely references societal gender norms or biological gender differences, or treats someone despairingly because of their gender (or could be perceived as such) is removed. And of course, any gendered flirtation or pronunciations of attraction to a gender are downplayed or removed, as has been demonstrated.

Why was this one in particular hit so hard by the gender weirdos?

Three Houses wasn't anywhere near this bad.
It isn't just Fire Emblem, or Nintendo for that manner. I follow a lot Twitter accounts that specifically point out bad translations or repost accounts that do, and it has become increasingly obvious that people translating many games across many genres from different companies are pushing this shit. I remember Triangle Strategy being one recent game that was hit particularly hard by this.

Conker's Bad Fur Day (created by Rare and released in 2001 for the Nintendo 64) had a remake for the original Xbox released in 2005 as Conker: Live and Reloaded.
It was initially supposed to be named Conker: Live and Uncut, but Microsoft pussied out and had all of the cursing censored (among a few minor things).

This is to say, Nintendo (who was completely onboard with Conker's Bad Fur Day during production) enforced less censorship on the Nintendo 64 for Conker than Microsoft on the original Xbox.

The romance being toned down is weird but it never really belonged in Fire Emblem anyway. Is there any woke shit going on in the location?
To be fair, Fire Emblem localization has been bad and questionable since Fates? I mean, I see people complaining about localization for FE starting from Fates, not older games. Also Fates happens to have romance thing more prominent too, it's very late to complain about romance contents in FE now. Then there's the gacha FE Heroes.
A bit of research shows that FE - Genealogy of the Holy War, on the Super Famicom, has a Love System (with a hidden Jealousy mechanic) in which playable characters can fall in love & marry with other playable characters of the opposite gender, determined by the player's actions. This results in having their kids as new units later on.
Bond dialogues also existed since the GBA & Gamecube titles in the 2000's, and FE7 for instance has character endings including romantic pairings (with differences between the JP and ENG texts as pointed out in this blog article).

I assume a part of the english audience was mainly bitching about Fire Emblem going "too anime" since Awakening but it makes me wonder how much the older FE games were getting the "4kids treatment" when it comes to character personalities and story scenes. Enough to mislead westerners.

So, Etie is a similar case to Elfie in Fates then (amusingly how similar their names are).
Thou can't be a female character believing in physical strength and still be feminine, thou must be a girlboss type. They really don't understand nor like the moe gap of anime tomboys.
Even though, there is probably like at least one other non typical girly female character in their respective game.

Game mods that enable ACCURATE translation of the original scripts are verboten now.

"respecting the wishes of the developer" may be the most retarded excuse I have ever seen, in a modding website of all places

Imagine simping this fucking hard for a company that has a team that goes out of their way to make the dialogue translate in absolutely no way to what the original is supposed to be.

There's this argument that companies can get away with the things they do because people are constantly bickering with each other over stupid shit like brand loaylty and whatnot. But what about situations like this where you have faggots like this one that play defense on the company's behalf? The worst part is they aren't even GOOD at it, they ALWAYS take the emotional route rather than use logic, and it somehow fucking works.

Fuck this word-policing bullshit. Just makes me want to use swear words and bash companies even more to spite faggots like this one.

How do these type of people become mods for a fucking mod website if they have these type of ideals?
same way current 4chan jannies and reddit mods are 1984 friendly types.
if you do "wrongthink" = out.
if you don't = in.
the ones that enforce such rules clawed really hard to reach decision making positions to entrench themselves, it's like high positions being taken over by fags that are hostile to anyone but other fags in work enviroments and will actively whittle down such people in order to promote fags like them.

I remember when really old games didn't even get translations, but rather actual ad libbing by the west. Then we moved onto to getting actual translations with silly English name changes. Then we started getting accurate translations with honorifics and original names left intact. Now we're horseshoeing back into fan fiction tier ad libbing and trying to scrub all the Japanese culture out of games because it's problematic, icky, or doesn't align with the idealogy of the translator.
Well. honorifics in English are dumb but I agree itherwise.

Got any links to info on that?
Late and gay, but here you go.

This one is probably my favorite of the ones I remember, but others exist. The fact we're scared of using gendered language in English gets me every single time. Even if someone is very clearly in the wrong and should not be emulated, the very idea that they can't just call someone "woman" like the one example "Away woman!" is so extremely laughable

An article that covers a large amount of them.

Fire Emblem was ALWAYS anime even with older EN localizations back in the 2000s, Eliwood is one of the most typical shonen protagonists you can probably think of on a basic writing level. The only twist is he's a young noble man as opposed to some complete underdog kid. Hector is the more rough and aggressive foil to Eliwood, and Lyn is the woman who tries to round out the bro dynamic between the two. This is as basic as Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura's most surface level dynamic as the original trio of Naruto. The only real difference is Hector isn't really an edgelord at all, but he is far brasher and rougher in his speech to contrast Eliwood being more soft and well spoken. This is very clear in the EN translation without question, just some people don't know what anime is or was back then.

The biggest problem with this "too anime" shit is most older FE players don't know what the fuck anime was back then. FE4 for example has some 80s anime hair where it is like 20% of their body is and poofy as shit, and the creator was inspired by Gundam and Legends of the Galactic Heroes. FE fans are retards who don't know that they've been playing anime games for about 20 years now, and only think this started with Awakening and are in denial because they can't accept they like an anime series.

"It is only anime when I don't like it." Average old school FE fan probably.

Oh my god they actually called the localizers developers. That is a special kind of retarded. You just know they haven't done this to other translations and retranslations either. It's sad to see the modding community come to this point. Makes me wonder what else this site's staff is up to as well. "Tom" and "DEADMAN" seem especially defensive of this.
