Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

This is getting ridiculous. Is there a site that documents all cases of international/regional censorship? It's going to reach a point where I will have to do research on literally any Japanese game I want to play first(inevitably spoiling it to myself) and avoiding any and all remakes/rereleases altogether

Even without fully understanding japanese yet, and without even listening to the jp audio I can immidiatly tell some faggot localizer that is a failed writer "punched it up" when it reads like some retard theatre kid.
Hell, my Japanese is pretty crappy too, and even I can understand the spoken dialogue in the videos @mrs thickness posted nearly word-for-word. Somebody on the localization team had delusions of being Shakespeare, that's for damned certain.
 
Not sure. Baten Kaitos HD itself doesn't have a page, though Baten Kaitos Origins does. They do note alterations that many people wouldn't consider censorship traditionally, like Triangle Strategy's war on the word "woman".
Maybe I was thinking of Origins being the one that had the alterations to lines then.

Man... It's so strange that gender is being abolished in games so hard and fast, I don't think this is happening in film, literature, or music.

For retro games I tend to check now to see if there's a fan decensor patch. Like the bunny girls in Lufia. That was really stupid. I didn't even know what a Playboy bunny was at that age. If anything I would of thought they were dressed like Nei from Phantasy Star 2. No one would have noticed or cared. Also, for some reason the sailors had their palettes changed. Probably some autist liked blue pants better.

it's not something that UO is particularly egregious for, but the ENG localization also tends to write it's women in a way that they come across as much harder, sassier, and more aggressive. it reminds me of how on box art JP Kirby is like :biggrin: and NA Kirby is like :mad:

They think kids, especially boys, won't want a game with a cutesy character on the cover. So it has to be edgy and cool. Sometimes characters who were too "anime" would have their eyes altered, making them just look like trannies because it didn't fit the rest of the art style.
 
Has anything been happening in the world of shitty localizations and its pushback or has the movement already died off?

This video, which is recent, isn't about video censorship specifically, but it mentions many recent censorship controversies, such as the Like A Dragon interview controversy, and does focus on a specific infamous incident that recently hit anime dubbing, which is very much tied to the hip with video game dubbing in that both industries are undergoing the same issues and, in many cases, involve the same people:

Hey, I've been working on a similar game-focused localization thread on another forum. I used a good amount of images from this thread, but there's likely a lot you haven't seen before as well. The goal is easy navigation in the OP, linking to fan translations/uncensored patches, and showing examples of localizers taking pride in fucking up translations. If there's anything you think I should add or fix, please let me know.

I'm sorry. But Bonaire's dialog in Alundra is epic. I know some people hate Working Designs. But I liked the dialog in that game and it didn't really take away from the story. If anything, some of these lines helped to give the player some laughs in what is a very dark story. So many villagers die horribly. Including a child murdered in the streets by a religious fanatic. If there's anything plot important that got cut out to make room for some lolz then I will retract my statement a few degrees. But I still like the dialog quite a bit. I don't think there's a fan translation of this game. There are a few unWorked fan hacks out there. But I'm not sure what they entail besides restoring gameplay.

Some of these WD translations would have never made it today though. Mail calls Slick a retard in the Sega CD version of Popful Mail. And as I said before Magic Knight RayEarth for Saturn is full of dirty jokes despite you playing as three 14 year old girls.

The Animal crossing stuff is so unnecessary though. I can understand Christmas being a bit of an issue due to religion. It's not a necessary change. But it's understandable. Turkey Day however is just an olive branch to white pretendians who pretend to be offended over Thanksgiving one day a year. Just sad pandering. And of course the "choose your style" garbage goes without saying. Animal Crossing doesn't have to be any more troon friendly.

But what's up with the fish descriptions? Is Nintendo afraid of offending vegans? :roll:

Sorry to bother you, @BananaSplit², but what the fuck is this Akatsuki working with Koei Tecmo on DEI shit about? I can only find sensationalist shit and not really getting the whole story.
 
I've noticed the trend of releasing a game, then censoring it, adding wokeshit, or adding micro transactions via patch is getting more and more common. As is the related trend of not including this stuff in review copies.

There's a bunch of recent examples. Dragons Dogma 2, Pacific Drive, and Final Fantasy 7 all in the last month.

If this keeps up, I can see a small community forming around the idea of preserving these versions of games as the real version. I know I'd like to play the press version of Pacific Drive.

What did these games change in their patches? I agree with you, everybody needs to back up their 1.0 release or even older, if the game released demos or betas and such. Basic video game preservationism, especially when the game can get censored down the line.
