https://youtube.com/watch?v=rFr9KYanINgPaul Harrell brings his autism to the .30 Super Carry debate.
Pretty mild take from him, but probably correct.
Something needs to happen for this caliber to catch on, and I don't think Ian's (was it him?) simping is going to be enough. VHS had the porn industry rooting for it. .30 Super Carry needs more than just a pornstache carrying water for it.
Paul hits just about every argument to be had on the subject, but I want to expound just a little bit more in one area.
Handguns and cartridge pairings compete between on 2 or 3 factors for most people looking at personal self defense. Those are: round size and expansion, number of rounds, and (optionally) conceal-ability. Paul touched on this, and was right.
The reason being is for the purposes of a human target, most all handgun cartridges on the market can't get up to the speed necessary while retaining enough mass/expansion to cause traumatic hydrostatic damage. A .223 Remington fired out of a rifle is far more lethal than an .45 ACP fired out of damn near anything for a reason.
So the discussion is, do you want a slightly to moderately more lethal round, or do I simply want more rounds. That was the 9mm vs 45 ACP argument.
Now, the formula changes when the target changes. Are you worried about large, dangerous animals Then you may want to invest far more into the hand-cannon side of things. Wanting to punch through light cover might change your cartridge choice again. Similarly if you are choosing a sidearm for fighting a war, your target distance will probably be significantly different than a typical self-defense scenario.
So is .30 Super Carry a decent cartridge. Sure. Is it going to replace 9mm? probably not.
But what do I know? I EDC a 10mm Glock 20, and that obviously isn't the height of concealed carry wisdom.
