Generation Z can't work alongside people with different views and don't have the skills to debate. - Says Channel 4 boss as she cites the pandemic as the main cause of the workplace challenge.

Young people in the workplace don't have the skills to debate, disagree and work alongside people with different opinions, Channel 4's chief executive has said.

Speaking at the Royal Television Society's Cambridge Convention, Alex Mahon said 'particularly post-pandemic' Gen Z youngsters 'haven't got the skills to discuss' and 'haven't got the skills to disagree'.

She said this phenomenon, which was being seen in the workplace, was a 'dangerous step change'.

The Channel 4 boss cited the time youngsters had spent 'being out of colleges' during the pandemic, meaning they had not been exposed as much to 'people with a difference of opinion'.

Gen Z usually refers to people born between the middle to late 1990s and the early 2010s.

Ms Mahon told the Royal Television Society Cambridge Convention: 'What we are seeing with young people who come into the workplace - particularly post pandemic - with this concentration of short form content [short videos on services like Tik Tok and YouTube] is they haven't got the skills to debate things.

'They haven't got the skills to discuss, they haven't got the skills to disagree and commit because they haven't been raised, particularly with being out of colleges to have those kind of debates, to get to the point where you've got people with a difference of opinion to you and you're happy to work alongside that, and that is a really dangerous step change in my view that we are seeing.'

Last year Channel 4 carried out research which showed these youngsters are less tolerant of others' views than their parents or grandparents.

The study found that young people could therefore be said to be 'less liberal' than their elders. The research branded this phenomenon as the 'rise of the Young Illiberal Progressives' or 'Yips'.

During Ms Mahon's appearance at the event she unveiled new research which showed that many 'associate their short form social media consumption with feeling a lack of control'.

It was added: 'When the algorithm is in charge, people say they feel emotionally out of control - the immediate dopamine-hit fades rapidly and they are left feeling empty.'

It added that it gave them a sense that their lives had been 'encroached upon'.

The research said viewers in Britain felt 'anxious about video overload'.

People watch over five hours per day 'and the video day is lengthening', Ms Mahon revealed, adding that 'short-form viewing has piled on to long form viewing, and gaming has piled in on top of both'.

Tried fixing your post to make it easier for zoomers to understand.

thanks for the terrible reminder on (part of the reason) why it's impossible to find dense, compact instructions or answers to questions on the internet. not only does the demon god of SEO require word salads, zoomer tards can't seem to handle reading more two sentences without a flashy video distracting them and millenials are too busy looking for microaggressions that would require the information to be twice as long to handle all the unneeded inclusivity language

I worry about complex system collapse. The boomer in my work are retiring. Older gen X are now largely in charge and manage things fine. Mid gen x (my lot) seem ok too.
Below that things get weird. Early millennials are ok. Late millennial is where it starts to break down and you start finding these bizarrely fragile but brittle people. I’m not sure what the gen boundaries are past millennials but I keep seeing us hire kids who have great quals on paper but cannot do the very basics.
- can’t put a semi formal email together
- no polite deference to expertise or age. That’s not just people’s egos, if you’re addressing some prof from Germany you use their title, or they’re offended.
- cannot file. ‘Use search’ and dump it all in one folder
- cannot troubleshoot. Not tech, and not real life problems either. They have no initiative. Something breaks, that’s fine but tell me. I need to know so we can fix it.
- cannot ‘work a problem.’ If I give them a thing to sort out, I expect questions. But they just hit a wall and stop. Do t tell me they’ve stopped or ask for help. Finally got some eastern euro kid who would come back when he was stuck, and ask and then keep going in the problem, and work it through. Got him promoted fast.
- they cannot think or plan or come up with ideas.
It’s like they’ve been arrested at a childlike stage. They’re terrified of being wrong, they see it as a moral flaw. They’re brittle and attack quickly.
They’re also massively entitled. I had one guy who demanded a junior version of my job. I said ‘you want that? Ok, you need to do what we hired you for but I’ve brought people up before. Show me you can do this at first and you’ll get more interesting stuff and we will go from there.’ Literally offering him a path to promotion.
Did he take it? Nope. Bitched about being too good for the work, dumped all his work in the admin girl, refused to do the tasks he was given. Still demanded the better job.
There are exceptions but this younger gen are majority retarded

I had a zoomer intern on my floor, newly-hired, and handed a test environment to work with.
The whole point was to allow him to explore, move fast, and break things (the fastest way to learn an unfamilar tech stack is to track down and fix the source of breakages).

Well, inevitably, he broke something, and came into my cube in an absolute nervous breakdown.

Clearly this was supposed to break, I told him so, that this was normal for learning, and invited him to shadow me while I poked around fixing it up.

Within 5 minutes he was rocking back and forth on the floor of my cube, absolutely unreachable.
No matter what effort I put in to relax him, he was just gone.

I heard a week later that he unleashed his pent up anxiety on our head of product and was escorted out.

I absolutely blame his parents.
I appreciate being in a place where everyone's basically old enough to be my dad (or older): their disinterest in what the youngins are up to means they just assume I'm of average coolness for my age (I'm not: I'm actually way, way cooler). It helps that I'm fine with the expectation of inheriting the work these older guys plan to retire from in a few years.

Lol. So us not being indoctrinated was a problem.

Whoever came up with the term Yips deserves to have his nuts shot off.

Anyway, my opinion: I'll argue with you all night long honey- not on company time. I don't get paid for that. Honestly none of us get paid enough to hear the millennial faggots drone on about gays and mental health all day. I'll smile, nod, and agree, knowing full well that you live a miserable debt ridden life while I have none. And the millennial will moan and bitch about how they're going to therapy- when all I hear is that you need to talk to dad and marry your GF of 8 years.

In short: I'm not arguing motherfucker, because every older person I've met is a basket case, and all my cheery personality chewing them out would do is get me fired. That simple.

We've only been pointing this out for years. media and edu has only been reinforcing this mentality by supporting the idea of "no normalcy" with anyone or anything you disagree with! They are STILL pushing this mentality. From deplatforming/canceling to calling everyone nazis.. It's all about shutting and keeping out anyone with the "wrong" opinions or views. This OC extends to debate. Because any debate is clearly guilty of platforming and treating incorrect (other) views as legitimate.

What did you think was the point of getting rid of your comment sections and closing forums? It was because half the fucking country has different opinions on things and online debates couldn't be protected against becoming "toxic" (i.e. against the wrong side holding it's own, winning or even merely being stated publicly).

The elites and media are terrified because they know the only option to fix this, to return the country and societal discourse back to normalcy, is to tell the little adult babies that make up current young adults and teens, that YES, you do in fact have to tolerate and work with/for people and things that don't perfectly align with your personal ideological sensibilities!

Really society shares part of the blame. The stupid, down right MORONIC and fallacious mentality of "lol let them go (in school/higher edu), when they get into the real world they'll learn the hard way" That shit only worked when we were still mostly turning out sane critically thinking people. Once we started turning out braindead conformers, trained to cuck out the moment the right kind of person or argument came along... it was doomed! But OC society, even the right, is insanely afraid of interfering with education and especially higher education. We are going to have to get over that if we want to have a future!

I like it.
It's a great slur, with the right amount of demeaning attitude to it.
The problem is it has progressive in it. It instantly narrows the scope of who it fits. Like, Motherfucker, I don't like the gays, I go to church, shoot guns, I'm conservative. Yips my ass.

this is a power level but related and one of my more based moments in my life. i already put my 2 weeks in and i was leaving that day. this took place right before i clocked out. there was a troon customer that came in not even joking, looked like a man in a dress. had long spaghetti hair that was colored, little subtle, clean shaven arms with the broad shoulders of an NFL linebacker. he was wearing some faggot shirt with “trans pride” bracelet and a skirt. i made a passing comment to one of my co workers (which to describe this person in simple terms was lefty discord type woman) that i found that man disgusting. she goes “why osama” and i replied with “i really fucking don’t like trannies, i think they are sex pests who rape women and children. they are not women and i don’t agree with any person that claims that those are “real women””. by the time i said this, another co-worker overheard me say this while she was walking over and said “osama, why do you have such a hatred for trans people” the discord lefty says “because he secretly likes them” and they both laugh. i say “and that’s the thing, you want to keep accepting this shit and whenever somebody brings it up, oh you just mad because you want them or i’m just a transphobe for not wanting trannies around children. i don’t care for them, i wish they would stop fucking up every piece of media i enjoy, i wish that hearing about LGBTQ shit wasn’t apart of my daily life. i wish that people would stop assuming that a joke is racist/bigoted because it pushes a line. i have to go now but it was nice having this discussion. “ and said my goodbyes to everyone and left that day.

Trying to argue with logic only makes you look like more of a bigot to them. You should have just leaned over, given the tranny a wink and said "I have a thing for men in dresses." That would have short-circuited their brains.

I've recently had some changes in my work environment, and there have been some new pushes to get people trained to properly be able to train or manage shit. A lot of these people are being hired/taught at way younger than I'm used to seeing at my job, to the point I've seen multiple gen Alpha workers have downright breakdowns/tantrums over the most basic shit like "today we are unable to continue your training, we need you to help elsewhere".

An example of one of these people is a fuckin' he/him gender special woman with terrible fashion sense who saw we needed their help and instead went and cried in her car for 2 hours when told she would not finish her training today. (Very manly and he/him of her btw)

I guess I am an outlier here. I do talk politics a lot at work and with my boss. Debates even. Its always been friendly discussion, no one ever gets heated and the work continues to get done. Though that was after like a year of reading the room and getting the temperament of the department.
Talking politics at work is not a problem.
In the 80s when I worked in the car factory. My foreman was hard stalinist.
We had liberals, libertarians and skinheads working there.
We could talk and discuss and disagree and there were no issues.
At the end of the day we found common ground we could agree on and then we could discuss what we disagreed on.

We did it civilly. No one was slurred, no one got angry. We just had different viewpoints and opinions and we discussed them and tried to understand what the other guys were coming from.

These civil dscussions are not possible today.
Gen-Z is legit fully retarded to the point where I no longer have any sympathy for them but rather wish rent and mortgages go way up and wages drop just so their pathetic lives will become even shittier. This is what interacting with these retards have made me, a person that looks forward to other peoples suffering and failure.

This 100%
You worded it so well. I used to liken them to a C64. You make a small typo and they just go SYNTAX ERROR and just shutdown right there and then. Not even trying to identify or solve the issue. Just SYNTAX ERROR and they shut down right in front of you.
