So anyone know of an in-between from desktop and laptop? I have a mini-ITX build now, and Ideally, I want that + a monitor + a keyboard to be put into a portable package. I don't wanna pay a 1,000$ upcharge on some custom-engineered POS laptop that will be out of date in 3 years. I just want a desktop that's actually portable.
does such a thing exist?

So like a carrying bag or suitcase that can fit and secure a monitor, itx computer, and keyboard and mouse?

I built one myself actually, using a durable plastic case like this one: https://www.harborfreight.com/mater...roof-protective-case-x-large-green-56863.html
I made the internal parts of the chassis out of plywood, and used some cheap standoffs from Amazon to anchor the motherboard to the inside. The monitor is a used laptop monitor that I bought a LCD controller board for, and they keyboard is the thinnest one I could find at an electronics recycler nearby.
I don't have the exact list of parts right now, but I can provide them later if interested. Since your situation sounds like you won't be putting any system components inside the monitor/keyboard enclosure, you could probably go with a thicker monitor+keyboard, or maybe even a thinner case altogether.

So basically you want a "cyberdeck" style luggable?
Get a carry case, mount an iPad screen to the lid, 3D print some fittings to make the lid solid, glue/bolt some straps to hold the PC in place, and cut out foam pads for the rest of the carry case such that the case is held firmly in place while still allowing air access through the vents. You'll also want some padding on top of and below the PC to absorb shocks and vibrations. You'll also want to cut slots in the foam to store a small keyboard and your mouse in.
I've seen projects like that before.
Really though, just get a laptop.

Too bad the luggable form factor died.
I guess not fully dead...

So far my ideas are to replace the 2060 with a refurbished 2080ti and get a Peerless Assassin 120 for the cooler. What other ideas you think I can give for a friend?
Is there a nice website for tracking lots of ebay average selling prices for CPUs/GPUs very quickly? Your ideas seem good already. I assume no AMD GPU allowed. The 2080 Ti has more VRAM and memory bandwidth than similarly performing GPUs like the 4060 Ti 8 GB and 3070/Ti, and sells for under $300 refurbed as far as I can tell. DLSS 3.5 can be used on Turing (I had to check), but not DLSS 3.0 fake frames.

The only logical upgrade for the CPU is the 5700X3D, but it's not worth another $200 if the gimped Cezanne CPU is not a bottleneck.

For travel I used a ~1 liter desktop PC and a 15.6" portable display (probably around $60-80 on sale for 1080p) and a keyboard. It all fit into a backpack easily. It was easy to transport and work with and I have no desire to make a cyberdeck out of the components.

I respect it, but no- The economy aint there.
Very close! Ideally it would be a bit more form-friendly. Less DIN terminals more screen space.

These are soo fuckin cool! This is absolutely what I want. If I could fit a monitor to my SSUPD Meshroom S, that would get me there I think.

how did you manage that? A Beelink is 2.3L, the ASRock DeskMini A300 seems to be the smallest I can find at 1.9L. where'd you get a 1L computer?

What's your estimated price of the individual parts in that list?
CPU - Ryzen 5 5500 ($97.05)
GPU - RTX 2060 ($231.13)
PSU - Corsair CX550 ($51.55)
MOBO - Used MSI B450M ($35.61)
RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws V 2x8 16GB 3200MHz ($47.99)
SSD - Kingston M.2 1TB ($67.58)
Case - Coolman Harley ($21.28)

I was thinking of the 5700X3D but the motherboard cost is my issue. Maybe the SSD given Kingston is lackluster, then there is the PSU.

You made it sound like your friend already had the listed budget build parts. If you're starting from scratch, there's options to go poorer, like finding some refurbed OEM system and sticking a GPU in it.

End of the Road: An AnandTech Farewell (archive)

The neglected AnandTech is dying (they haven't put out a GPU review in years because of someone's house fire?), but the articles will remain online and the forums will remain operational (supposedly). Any writers worth getting paid will presumably shift over to Tom's Hardware which is owned by the same company.

If you need to archive multi-page articles, use the /print/ link instead of /show/. You don't get 10 comments at the bottom of the page but that hardly matters. "View All Comments" could be archived separately if there is any value in doing so.

That's really too bad. I always thought Anand was one of the better review sites, but like the article said, there isn't much market for the written word when you can watch a soyface goon out instead. Personally, I can digest articles about 10x faster than videos and like lots of charts I can pick apart.

This is a good time to remind everyone that you can get Hardware Unboxed videos in article form on TechSpot:
