guys, who of you had slave owning ancestors?

The progenitor of my surname and several of his descendants were the Middle Ages version of cops who served a succession of Tatar princes (they weren't Tatars but natmin Finno-Ugric Volga basin abos). I don't know if they personally owned slaves, but they certainly helped enforce slavery.

My ancestors on my mom's side were Slav peasants and probably slaves themselves (to other Slavs).

I mean, anybody who answers "no" is probably either lying or just ignorant.

I'm willing to bet somewhere along the thousands of year of family line at least one of my ancestors had some kind of slave.

One of my ancestors is this dude, who, along with killing many Indians and scheming millions of acres of land from them, was born on a plantation with about 110 slaves.
Doxed!

YouTube Poop frequent flyer Ainsley Harriot did that genealogy show and found he had slave owning ancestors:
An Ainsley YTP for reference, and to lighten the mood a little:

My maternal grandmother was really into genealogy and while researching some of her ancestors not only found out they had slaves, she found literal receipts for their purchase.

I'd really like to find out if they have any decedents so I can check up on them, see how they turned out.
would you give them the receipt and ask your money back?

This question is often treated as a joke, but it is a legitimate question.

A lot of people fail to consider that a majority of "white" people in the United States are the descendants of immigrants of the industrial age, which happened after the Civil War. From the 1880's through the 1920's, the immigration rate was at its highest point in history, with most of the immigrants coming from Ireland, Scotland, and Eastern Europe. So the whole argument that white people inherit the sins of their slave-owning ancestors is utterly bogus, because a majority of white people's ancestors weren't even in the country when slavery was a thing.

As for the people whose ancestors were in the country? 2/3 of the population of the United States lived in Northern states, where slavery was prohibited. In the South, there was a small but robust abolitionist faction and a large number of people too poor to be plantation owners with slaves.

So we are talking a very small percentage of people who owned slaves and whose descendants identify as "white" and who live in America.

Even those whose ancestors owned slaves are guilty of no such offense themselves, which is why reparation talk is fucking racist bullshit. But even if we are to be judged by the sins of our ancestors, probably well over 80% of whites have no slave owning ancestors.

They didn't own any but at least one was a slave-catcher who wrangled escaping negros & returned them for a bounty.
I like to read old shit from time to time. Old history books from the period, stuff like that. It turns out, slave owners were really nice people who were upstanding members of society and treated their slaves very well. Corporal punishment was extremely rare, almost to the point where it never happened. You didn't want to risk injuring your employees, that would be stupid. The number one punishment for unruly slaves was threatening to sell them without their family. That would usually get them right in line. Another tactic was telling them you would sell them to some guy in Louisiana, because the climate was so hot that most slaves would die after working there for awhile. The slaves knew this, and would beg and plead to be allowed to remain in the North.

The people that everyone agreed was the worst though, were the slave sellers, and also the guys that caught and wrangled them were considered to be the lowest of the low in a society. So your ancestors were the real creeps. I find that fascinating, you should be proud.

I'd say it's much higher than that even. Probably 95% or more.

Hopefully my ancient ancestors owned some Celtic slaves perhaps even some Greekoids, if I'm lucky the Normians and Romans will pay me reparations actually, still waiting.

I can't give a source atm, but I believe it was around 1.8% where as 8/10 jewish households in the south had slaves at the height of slavery.

The slave trade largest port at the height of slavery was Newport Rhode Island. Know what was built there too? The first Synagogue. If you know where to look, there's plenty of documentation from back then penned by jews about running the auctions. They would close on Saturdays for Shabbat.

My ancestors invented the word "nigger." One of them had terrible, terrible nightmares of horrific black creatures and woke up in a startle, yelling "FUCKIN' NIGGERS!" and it permanently entered the vernacular of what would become modern Belgium. It became associated with black people there after, because it provoked the same word from on-lookers.

I remember reading a jewish publication trying to justify that fact. They couldn't deny it, because it's true and there are records, so they said something like, "Well, Jews are urban people who lived in the city. And city dwellers had more slaves because they needed them."

Wait what? Are you telling me that jews are so lazy, they need black slaves even though they're in the city? If they ran a farm, I could understand it.

I remember Larry David went on one of those genealogy shows and, while his mom's side of the family was almost entirely wiped out in the Holocaust, his dad's side of the family were some of the earliest Jewish settlers in Alabama, and one of his ancestors had, on record, two slaves: one woman and one 8-year-old girl.

Meanwhile, Ben Affleck went on the same show, found out he also had some slave-owner ancestors, and then got all pissy and demanded they not air his episode.

Nope as far as written record go (mid 14th century) my ancestors always were small land owners who paid their taxes. So no not single one of my ancestors owned Niggers.
