I hope HLX retains vibes like this.
(Yes, this Source 2 SFM is old but somehow hasn't ever been posted here before.)

I wonder how Valve is going to handle interpreting Xen. On one hand, they've included Black Mesa in official franchise bundle sales before, but on the other hand, Xen's brief depiction in HL:A does look different. Me personally, I hope for a mix of something looking like both Black Mesa Xen and something like this from below, perhaps just at different parts of the borderworld.

I want them to go full HL1, with maybe just a little beauty in 1 or 2 special areas. I'm hoping that this Xen will be what they wanted to do back in 1998 but couldn't due to time.

I think Black Mesa dropped the ball on Xen just based on its beauty. Xen is a dumping ground where things that should never meet do and is a nightmare to live in. I don't think "wow I would love to live here" should ever be a thought that crosses my mind in Xen. The Nihilanth wanted to leave Xen for a reason.

I think Black Mesa dropped the ball
I think this in general

It seemed like it had a really promising start but mostly made bad art direction choices and the game feel deteriorated over time rather than improved

making Xen twenty times longer
this is because standard half-life circlejerk logic places xen as "could have been epic with such wasted potential" and the other levels just don't exist in these people's minds
Or keeping stuff like Residue Processing as is despite it being even worse than On A Rail in terms of crap level design.
this is because standard half-life circlejerk has on a rail as "worst level that goes on for too long" and residue processing is just not in these people's minds

I was fine with AOR & RP as levels in OG HL.
They're not the top chapters, but I feel they added in their own way.
AOR made me feel like I was actually going the distance and getting somewhere. It served the purpose of being a mini-odyssey across Black Mesa and in my first playthrough in 1998 I thought launching the rocket was the endgame or close to it.
RP's platformer puzzle was never my favorite, but I like it's atmosphere of being this near-abandoned/fully automated part of Black Mesa that makes you feel alone and going slightly insane.

@ What-is-Gordon's-personality/psyche-like-to-you?, I always assumed he was a stereotypical introverted yet charismatic genius, who progressively becomes a FarCry-ish hero in HL1 and ascends to stoic icon in the sequels. The way everyone praises you in HL2 as an academic beyond your years and how Barney fondly recalls goofing around with you in Black Mesa on multiple occasions only confirmed this bit of headcannon.

There were some datamined strings referring to shifing directions of gravity, I would love to see them experiments with that in Xen.

One, debatably good thing about Black Mesa's On The Rail is how intensive the firefight before you launch the rocket is. As ballbusting as it is, you do feel that satisfaction once it's over.

I don't get why people hate On A Rail so much.
10 year old me went from awesome fight against gargantua trying to power up the rail to getting lost in a confusing and unnecessarily complicated level that kept going forever. Replaying it a few years back it felt like it was not thoroughly gametested.

Residue Processing was getting annoying but stopped before getting too annoying. On a rail did not know when to end.

I remember hating it when I first played HL1 years ago because I kept getting lost and the tram was a bit janky, so I would assume others had the same issues. I've had a lot more fun with it in later playthroughs after understanding the layout of the chapters. You can either get through the chapter pretty quickly if you know what you're doing, or take your time and find some neat somewhat hidden areas off track.

Similarly related, every now and then I tend to see people hate on the airboat and car sections of HL2, which I never really understood because those are some of my favorite parts of HL2.

i assume some people really don't like the stop-and-start nature of those chapters, where you deal with some bullshit and then drive a few thousand hammer units before you inevitably run into some more bullshit

also that car in episode 2 just isn't as fun to drive when you're carrying the gnome

On a related note, I played the Half Life Extended mod demo. And holy shit is it bad. There is surely a lot of work that went into it, but only in the worst places. They made it really difficult to follow where you are supposed to go to. There are many things to look at, but there is so much bloat in decorations that you end up lost because there is nothing pointing you to where you should go.

I think the idea is cool, but you can only do "Half-Life 1/2 but X" so many times before it gets old. I'd take a custom campaign any day of the week. Granted I know the idea is that its like HL1 but like completely different/HD/new/etc. but Black Mesa did the idea better like what? 5 years ago now? Longer if we count the mod version.

If you are getting frustrated with the achievement, here you go. I wonder if the purple hat achievement in Black Mesa works the same way.

it's not really that hard it can just be a horrible slog that wrecks your quickload finger in certain parts
and it loves flying off that retarded fucking car
and i softlocked myself once too because i had unfortunate gnome positioning and i went past a one-way trigger
otherwise all you need to do is press +use on the gnome and move it to the rocket
