Maybe this is just me sperging for nothing, but I can’t be the only one who dislikes how a lot of the demons are designed, right?
Don‘t get me wrong, characters like Stolas, the bird demons, the Hellhorses, Loona, Octavia, and the imps all look great (the imps are personally some of my favorite designs in the entire show), but most others are either hit or miss.
I‘m not into Demonology or any of that weird shit, but it personally bothers me that so much creativity is squandered when it comes to the higher-ups of Hell. What I mean by that is that the final designs either don’t make sense or only vaguely resemble their myth counterparts. Same goes for whatever they represent.
Ex. Stolas is a good example. His myth counterpart is literally just a tall owl with a crown, but the designers still managed to make a unique and creative design on their own while still calling back to the original (Stolas is tall/spindly, and he’s outfitted with royal garb and a crown).
Meanwhile you have characters like Asmodeus who just barely make the cut. I really hate what they did with his design; his counterpart is literally a three-headed king (a Bull head, a human head, and a ram head) with a rooster’s foot riding a fucking dragon. How badass is that? And yet in the show he’s just some vaguely birdlike humanoid. I get that he’s supposed to resemble a rooster, but you can barely see it. Honestly I couldn’t even tell if that was supposed to be him at first and only figured it out by the very tiny, only vaguely animal shaped heads on his mane.
Same with Andrealphus and Paimon;
Andrealphus is supposed to be a peacock (which isn’t even remotely noticeable in the show design, he looks like a Stolas recolor), and he’s illustrated as having literal eyes on his tail where the eye spots should be. Also, idk where tf Vivzie got the whole ice aesthetic from, he’s not described even once with being associated with snow. And Paimon is supposed to look like some fruity dude riding a camel, so idk where she got the whole “owl” look from either.
Maybe they can shapeshift into whatever form they please, but basically what I’m trying to say is that for a show full of crazy character designs, they sure didn‘t bother trying with some of the most ridiculous looking demons out there.
They still could’ve kept the pimp look with Asmodeus and the chilly look with Andrealphus, but overall it strikes me as the team either not doing their research or not caring at all (which I find odd considering the insane amount of detail they put into their characters, what with the accurate symbols and Stolas being associated with botany and astronomy).
I understand that some designs are harder to animate than others, but I don’t see that as an excuse anymore with how overdesigned many of Viv’s characters tend to be, and Helluva Boss is no exception to that.
