Stardew Valley looked more like SNES Harvest Moon when they first announced it and I personally think that's how they got their preorders given Harvest Moon hadn't had a release in a while. You can see this in the first Stardew videos released and the dev articles showing the progression of character art. Bait and switch comes to mind but I think he personally changed during the years people became unhinged(2013-2015, roughly). Pacific Northwest millennials are notorious for being spoiled and pretentious, particularly ex-Californians. Maybe he was influenced by this.
