Can someone explain the Silksong hype to me? I don't hate Hollow Knight and I'm not trying to shit on the game or anything I'm just genuinely curious why a metroidvania side scroller has so much hype. I love metroidvania games and modern retro games, way better than big AAA titles, but there's so many metroidvania side scroller games that get released every day it seems like. And a lot of these metroidvanias are legitimately really great so it's not just Hollow Knight that was really good. I don't know it's just an odd thing to me that this specific game has way more hype than any other metroidvania that gets released today, I would have expected Blasphemous 2 to have this kind of hype but it didn't.

EDIT: I'm loving the enthusiasm people have for buying this game, I wish this was still the days of physical copies so real game stores would be having packed launch parties right now.
Polish. Blasphemous 1 to be polite, controlled like shit. Hollow Knight was smooth. No other metroidvanias I've played since Hollow Knight have reached that level of enjoyment for me. So I personally understand why people are interested and it's taking my will power to not purhase it right now since I hate going in without word of mouth. Then there is the whole 7 years thing, so that adds to the "if the first one was good, how CaN tHiS noT Be?!", so there is a hype train that has been simmering for a very long time. I started filing Silksong as vaporware like 2 years ago and I would still peek at the subreddit to see people spiraling into insanity with the lack of any sort of information. They basically created a community around waiting for Silksong, and today that just hit it's climax.

Im sadly at work right now but I'm forced to take a day off tomorrow due to FY reasons. Ill buy it tonight and hopefully pkay through the first boss. Want to do so before my feed spoils everything

That, and silksong was originally announced as an independent game literally like seven years ago, and was near radio silent for most of them.

People have been waiting for this payoff explicitly for most of a decade.
Ah okay that makes sense. I didn't realize that the game was announced so long ago, I actually thought it was only announced like a year ago lol. I play a lot of these side scrolling metroidvania games so I've never been all that fixated on Hollow Knight in particular.

That's not completely true, on Hollow Knight's release it had a whopping player base of 2,000 but gradually through word of mouth over 8 years it became a cult classic.

Is there a tldr on why it took the devs over 8 years to release this game?
They had too much fun working at it.

Hollow knight slow start happened because it was released shortly before Breath of the wild and nobody noticed its release.

DON'T QUESTION, CONSOOOOOOM!

Genuinely: Had this dropped a year after the original, it would've been lukewarm at best. I swear gaming has become a game's hype reaching 500%, then it drops, it's mediocre, and people just go "Oh okay, haha, aight. Anyway my next game is:"

Then again, the 3rd most wishlisted game on steam is a copy-paste asset flip chinese VR game.

There's a streamer I watch who loves Metroidvanias, though it's not his main thing. His community and wife finally got him to play Hollow Knight after years of trying to get him to do it.

He basically came out of it saying that it's probably one of the best Metroidvanias he's ever played.

Like he was honestly surprised how good it was.

According to them, Hollow Knight basically gave them infinite money so they just took as much time as they wanted making exactly what they wanted. The main team is just 3 guys, so this really could be it.

Time will tell how true that is if we cAN JUST FUCKING GET IN!

I'm beginning to think this might be the longest time the steam servers have been completely brought to their knees over the release of a game (barring maybe stuff in the very early days of it), definitely the longest that I know of.

I came here to say that I have never played Hollow Knight (or any metroidvania for that matter),
But now that I see what kind of impact the sequel has on the gaming community, literally 30 minutes after it released.
I might actually check those games out.

Possibly. Though to be fair, if you dropped it a year after the original it would have been before hollow knight received it's third and fourth free dlcs, which included 8 new boss fights (4 new, 4 upgrades of previous ones) and the boss rush mode. And the ending associated with the boss rush mode.

...And also this game is releasing with content comparable to the original game with all four of it's DLCs, in terms of boss and enemy count. And numerous other upgrades and expansions aside.

Apparently there's something about 3 man teams making great little indie gems. Project Wingman had a 3 person team as well and I enjoyed it a lot more than Ace Combat 7. Cold War is still the single best combat flight sim level I have played.

Hollow Knight is a very fun, very polished game. Even at full price ($15) it's worth picking up, and definitely worth getting if there is a sale on. It might not be for everyone but I think it's worth a look.

Now if the store would just load so I could try the new one...
